BACKGROUND: In addition to antigen-negative red blood cells (RBC), Immunohematology Reference Laboratories (IRL) must provide RBCs that are cytomegalovirus (CMV) seronegative. Due to high percentage of CMV seropositive individuals, it is challenging to find CMV and antigen-negative RBC. The IRL selects predominantly group O donors tested for CMV, and these RBC are sometimes needed to fill orders for nongroup O patients. This study evaluated units sent that were out of group to fulfill CMV-seronegative requests.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Requests for CMV-seronegative and antigen-negative RBCs

A case of erythrocytic polyagglutination in a healthy blood donor is reported. After a review of current literature, the results of clinical and serologic tests which led to the diagnosis of Tn-red cells polyagglutination are presented. This is only the sixth case of Tn-activation in a healthy blood donor. The clinical and forensic significance of this rare phenomenon is discussed.

BACKGROUND: Maternal IgG anti-A and anti-B isoagglutinin titers are key predictors of neonatal outcomes in ABO incompatibility-related hemolytic disease of the fetus and new-born (HDFN). This study aimed to compare the Column Agglutination Technique (CAT) and conventional tube technique (CTT) in measuring maternal IgG anti-A and anti-B isoagglutinin titers and assess their correlation with neonatal outcomes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective observational study included 125 O Rh-D positive pregnant mothers and their neonates with A, or B blood groups. Maternal antibody titers were measur

Limited clinical experience concerning heart transplantation across ABO blood group barriers suggests a high incidence of hyperacute rejection and poor patient outcome. Reported is a case of the short-term survival of an ABO-mismatched cardiac graft without evident adverse immunologic effects. A 41-year-old man with blood type O underwent heart transplantation receiving a blood type A2 donor organ. Cyclosporine-based immunosuppression was augmented with daily plasmapheresis and OKT3 therapy. Circulating anti-A antibodies were reduced quickly and held to a very low level with this regimen. The

Infectious morbidity in respect to 23 nosological forms was studied in 958 children with known blood groups and Rh factors during the first 7 years of their life. The absence of statistically significant differences in morbidity rates in children with different age groups was revealed in respect to 16 nosological forms. Significant differences in morbidity rates in children with different blood groups were revealed in respect to parotitis, rubella, scarlet fever, E. coli infections, bronchitis and pneumonia; similar differences linked with Rh factor were observed only in cases of measles, rube

BACKGROUND: In this study cull dairy cows from six California dairy herds were sampled seasonally over the course of a year. The objectives were to determine the prevalence of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) Salmonella spp. shed in cull cow feces, and the factors associated with fecal shedding of AMR and multidrug resistant (MDR) Salmonella.
METHODS: Six dairy farms located in the San Joaquin Valley of California were identified and enrolled as a convenience sample. On each dairy, and once during each of the four seasons, 10 cull cows were randomly selected for fecal sampling on the day of thei

The goals and risks of blood transfusions are listed up. Indications for blood transfusions are given. Immunological reactions between donor and recipient are discussed. On the basis of our own results of antibody-screening the risk of sensitisation is calculated. Two short case-reports demonstrate organizational and serological problems in the treatment of antibody-carriers.

The distribution of ABO and Rhesus D (RhD) blood groups is crucial for ensuring the safety of blood transfusions and for optimal blood donation planning. Gansu Province in Northwest China is characterized by remarkable ethnic diversity, which may contribute to a unique blood group distribution pattern in this region. This study investigates blood group distribution in Gansu Province, China, and considers the implications for the balance between blood supply and demand. Data from 71,363 blood donors (2014-2023) and 188,827 patients (2018-2023) were extracted from the hospital information manage

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the frequency distribution of of ABO haemolytic disease of newborn (ABO-HDN) and to know the predictive value of immunohaematological tests in identifying at risk neonates.
BACKGROUND: ABO incompatibility, although a common cause of haemolytic disease of newborn, has several unaddressed issues related to it.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study over 20 months was carried out in a tertiary care centre in South India. Blood grouping, Direct Antiglobulin test (DAT) and elution studies were performed on neonatal samples, whereas blood grouping, antibody screeni

The protective effect of ABO incompatibility between mother and fetus in respect of pregnancy-induced Rh isoimmunization has been recognized for approximately 20 years. Many have tacitly assumed that this protection was absolute and that when an infant was born with Rh hemolytic disease of the newborn, who was also ABO-incompatible with its mother, there must have been a previous ABO-compatible pregnancy in which the mother was initially sensitized. It has also been assumed that pregnancy-induced Rh isoimmunization could not occur if the father was AB and the mother O. Data are presented to sh

The ABO blood group system was the first to be discovered; still, there is an enigma in ABO subgroups. The A1 and A2 phenotypes account for about 99% of all A or AB blood group individuals, and the rest are the weaker subgroups. They usually are suspected in cases of blood group discrepancies. Meticulous serological testing with technical expertise will help to differentiate these subgroups. We describe a case of a healthy blood donor with blood group discrepancy due to a weak subgroup of 'A' in the AB blood group.

A case-control study on the association between genetic markers (ABO, Rh, MNSs and sex) and typhoid fever (TF) was performed. We found that (a) the B allele conferred protection to females for TF and a mild susceptibility to males; (b) the CDe haplotype (or the RH3 phenotype, mostly CDe/CDe) was associated with protection against Salmonella in both sexes, while cDE (or RH7, mostly cDE/cDE, and RH8, mostly cDE/cde) was associated with susceptibility to TF, and (c) heterozygotes Ss (MNSs system) had a high susceptibility, while SS and particularly ss homozygotes seemed to be protected for the di

It is widely thought that expression of ABH antigens on platelets is insufficient to materially affect the survival of ABH-incompatible platelets in transfusion recipients, but anecdotal reports of poor survival of A and B mismatched platelets suggest that this is not always the case. The A and B antigen expression on platelets of 100 group A(1) and group B blood donors was measured, and 7% and 4%, respectively, had platelets whose A and B antigen levels consistently exceeded the mean plus 2 SD. On the basis of flow cytometric and statistical analysis, donors whose platelets contained higher t

The secretor gene, which determines secretion of the ABH blood group antigens into saliva and other fluids, has widely varying frequencies in different healthy populations. Its frequency in patients suffering from certain diseases also differs from that in healthy persons. These observations suggest that frequencies of the gene are to some extent the results of natural selection. One means of selection is through haemolytic disease of the newborn. Women, mostly of group O, become immunized to the A or B antigen of a fetus, and this or subsequent fetuses are at risk from haemolytic disease of t
