Increased fracture risk represents an emerging and severe complication of diabetes. The resulting prolonged immobility and hospitalisations can lead to substantial morbidity and mortality. In type 1 diabetes, bone mass and bone strength are reduced, resulting in up to a five-times greater risk of fractures throughout life. In type 2 diabetes, fracture risk is increased despite a normal bone mass. Conventional dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry might underestimate fracture risk, but can be improved by applying specific adjustments. Bone fragility in diabetes can result from cellular abnormalities

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to verify whether sarcopenia and its components are associated with hip areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and geometry in postmenopausal women (PW).
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, appendicular bone-free lean mass (aLM) and hip bone mass and geometry were measured using dual-energy x-ray emission absorptiometry (DXA). Muscle power and strength were measured by five times Sit-to-Stand Test (5-STS) and dynamometry, respectively, in 175 PW. Sarcopenia was identified as low aLM plus low muscle strength or low muscle power. Multiple linear regression (c

Metrics of femur geometry and body composition have been linked to clinical hip fracture risk. Mechanistic explanations for these relationships have generally focused on femur strength; however, impact loading also modulates fracture risk. We evaluated the potential effects of femur geometry and body composition on femoral neck stresses during lateral impacts. Fifteen female volunteers completed low-energy sideways falls on to the hip. Additionally, participants completed ultrasound and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry imaging to characterize trochanteric soft tissue thickness (TSTT) over the

Previous research has shown conflicting reports about the effect of systemic sclerosis (SSc) on bone metabolism, especially considering bone mineral density (BMD), bone microarchitecture, and risk of fracture. The objective of this review is to analyze data from previous articles to investigate the differences in BMD and fracture risk between SSc and non-SSc populations and to discuss potential underlying mechanisms. The main factors investigated have been BMD (mean and standard deviation), t-scores and z-scores at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip measured by dual-energy X-ray abs

The appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) is commonly used to evaluate human skeletal muscle mass. Muscle, an adjacent tissue of bone, is closely related to bone growth and development. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between the ASMI and lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) to identify potential risk factors for osteoporosis. We analyzed the data collected by the NHANES from 2017 to 2018, and finally included 948 participants aged 40 to 59 years. We evaluated the correlation between the ASMI and lumbar spine BMD using univariate and multiple linear regression mo

The bone mass increases that occur during the period of childhood are of great significance for maximizing the peak bone mass in adults and preventing for osteoporosis. Studies have reported that VA can improve the bone health in adults. Moreover, limited studies have assessed such associations in children. In this cross-sectional study including 426 children, we assessed the children's plasma retinol concentration by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and the dietary intake of VA and carotenoids using a structured Food Frequency Questionnaire. Their bone mineral content and bone mineral

Osteoporosis has traditionally been characterized by underlying endocrine mechanisms, though evidence indicates a role of inflammation in its pathophysiology. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of gram-negative bacteria that reside in the intestines, can be released into circulation and stimulate the immune system, upregulating bone resorption. Exogenous LPS is used in rodent models to study the effect of systemic inflammation on bone, and to date a variety of different doses, routes, and durations of LPS administration have been used. The study objective was to determine whether systemic a

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend screening for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) related bone disease (CFBD) using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for all people ≥ 18 years of age and select people ≥ 8 years of age. However, adherence to these guidelines is variable. This study aims to evaluate screening practices among adult programs in the US and identify patient and program-based characteristics which may influence screening.
METHODS: The CF Foundation Patient Registry (CFFPR) was used to identify all people over the age of 18 who were seen at adult CF programs and received screening for

Premenopausal women with idiopathic osteoporosis (PreMenIOP) have marked deficits in skeletal microstructure. We have reported that sequential treatment with teriparatide and denosumab improves central skeletal bone mineral density (BMD) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and central QCT in PreMenIOP. We conducted preplanned analyses of high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) scans from teriparatide and denosumab extension studies to measure effects on volumetric BMD (vBMD), microarchitecture, and estimated strength at the distal radius and tibia. Of 41 women enr

Background: In patients with lymphedema (LE), in addition to hand dominance, between-group comparisons of interlimb soft tissue differences need to account for differences in whole-body adiposity, measured directly by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or indirectly by body mass index. No study has evaluated the effects of hand dominance and whole-body adiposity on limb composition in patients with LE. This study's purpose was to compare soft tissue composition of affected and unaffected limbs of women with breast cancer, who did and did not have LE, controlling for dominance and percent b

Bone density decreases rapidly after spinal cord injury (SCI), increasing fracture risk. The most common fracture sites are at the knee (i.e., distal femur or proximal tibia). Despite this high fracture incidence, knee-specific scans for bone density using dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were not available until 2014 and are still not routinely used in clinical practice today. This has made it difficult to determine the rehabilitation efficacy and hindered understanding of the long-term changes in knee areal bone density. The purpose of this investigation was to compare areal bone mineral dens

Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) often leads to bone loss, even in its asymptomatic presentations. Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) is a method to assess the trabecular bone structure of the spine. This study aimed to evaluate TBS measurements combined with Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) values in the search for more accurate bone fragility risk assessment among PHPT patients. From 2017 to 2019, patients diagnosed with PHPT (n = 64), before surgery, were invited to participate in this study. Bone mineral density (BMD) by DXA at the lumbar spine, total hip, femoral neck, distal third radius, and
