Versatile Visible-Light-Driven Synthesis of Asymmetrical Phosphines and Phosphonium Salts.

Asymmetrically substituted tertiary phosphines and quaternary phosphonium salts are used extensively in applications throughout industry and academia. Despite their significance, classical methods to synthesize such compounds often demand either harsh reaction conditions, prefunctionalization of starting materials, highly sensitive organometallic reagents, or expensive transition-metal catalysts. Mild, practical methods thus remain elusive, despite being of great current interest. Herein, we describe a visible-light-driven method to form these products from secondary and primary phosphines. Us…

Chiral Benzimidazole Manganese Catalysts for Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of 3-Substituted 2H-1,4-Benzoxazines.

The efficient synthesis of chiral 3,4-dihydro-2H-1,4-benzoxazines is of considerable interest to both academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Current catalytic methods predominantly rely on precious metals and air-sensitive chiral phosphine ligands. As a cost-effective alternative, the asymmetric reduction of benzoxazine frameworks using earth-abundant metals remains underexplored. Herein, we report manganese catalysts bearing chiral benzimidazole ligands derived from (1S,2S)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of 2H-1,4-benzoxazines. This protocol aff…

Learning dispositions as a lens for teaching socioscientific issues: Attitudes of university biology students towards animal experimentation.

Attitudes towards socioscientific issues (SSIs) represent crucial learning dispositions, as they can influence the students' willingness to engage with SSIs. Animal experimentation is a particularly contentious SSI, with attitudes ranging from rejection to acceptance. They are influenced by external factors (e.g., research context, test animal) and internal factors (e.g., knowledge, ethical aspects). Understanding these attitudes is essential for fostering reflective engagement with SSIs in higher education. This study (N = 503) examines self-reported attitudes of pre-service teacher biology s

Educational disparities in STEM during COVID-induced distance learning and a potential strategy to address them.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted widespread school closures and a swift transition to distance learning, raising concerns about consequences for student success. This study explores academic outcomes in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses during COVID-induced distance learning using student-course records at an U.S. public university. We particularly focus on students from underserved populations and who have below average academic outcomes. Employing an expected shortfall regression strategy, we examine outcomes in the bottom quintile and compare differences between

Barriers and enablers of research participation among undergraduate health students in Sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Research participation among undergraduate healthcare students (UHS) is widely recognized as key to their academic and professional development, as well as to developing future competent health workforce. However, in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the participation of undergraduate health students in research remains limited. This review aims to systematically explore the barriers and enablers to research participation among UHS in SSA. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases for studies published in English from 2

Can we Mitigate the Impacts of Test Anxiety Through Reappraisal Interventions? A Replication Study in Science Courses Across Multiple Institution Types in the United States.

There is compelling evidence that test anxiety-related performance is contributing to documented trends in attrition in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. While some anxiety-mitigation interventions have yielded promising results, these interventions have not been replicated broadly, specifically at different institution types. In the current research, we (a) examine how test anxiety relates to performance in STEM courses, by student characteristics and institution type; and (b) test, via replication, a cognitive reappraisal intervention across 12 courses at seven h

Disability level and visibility: Associations with unmet academic accommodation needs and attitudes toward requesting accommodations.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Despite legal mandates to provide appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities in the U.S., many report gaps between what they need and receive. This study examined the role of disability level, visibility, and demographic factors in predicting unmet academic accommodation needs and attitudes toward requesting accommodations. RESEARCH METHOD/DESIGN: A sample of 409 adults who had had disabilities during their school years and who still had them completed an online survey assessing their current disability level, current disability visibility (invisible, semi-vi

Drawing-based instruction enhances practical performance and academic flow in cardiovascular and respiratory anatomy education: a quasi-experimental study.

Relying on passive, traditional methods in anatomy education hinders deep understanding, whereas adopting active and creative teaching strategies fosters engagement and improves outcomes. Achieving deep immersion and sustained engagement in learning anatomy through learner-centered and active teaching strategies allows learners to understand complex spatial and functional relationships better. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effect of drawing-based instruction on learning outcomes and the academic flow of medical students in the cardiovascular and respiratory system anatomy course.

Educational strategies for integrating gender perspectives in health professions training: a systematic review to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.

BACKGROUND: Preparing health professionals to deliver equitable, culturally competent care requires integrating gender perspectives throughout medical training. While essential for addressing health disparities affecting women, men, and gender-diverse populations, implementation approaches vary widely across institutions and regions. Evidence on effective strategies remains fragmented. This systematic review synthesizes educational interventions for gender-sensitive training, evaluates outcomes on student competencies, and examines global research patterns to identify equity gaps in the schola

Supporting quantitative skills in biomedical science with smart worksheets: intentions, impact and barriers to engagement.

INTRODUCTION: The growing diversity of university student populations highlights the critical need for inclusive support strategies. Student outcomes often remain linked to socio-economic factors and Level 3 qualifications, challenging universities to create equitable learning environments, particularly for foundational skills like quantitative analysis. This study investigated the impact of widening participation (WP) characteristics on student engagement with, and perceptions of, novel asynchronous digital Smart Worksheets developed by LearnSci in collaboration with the Institute of Biomedic

Why do so many in academic health care tend to assume that subspecialty surgical training begets higher quality health care than general pediatric surgical training?

BACKGROUND: The author spent all his attending level practice in general hospitals, resulting in early exposure to developing technologies, allowing early adaptation. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES: The adaptation of balloon dilation of arterial stenoses to treat esophageal strictures in children, and the use of MRI in anorectal malformations. RESULTS: Balloon dilatation of esopageal strictures and MRI assessment of anorectal anomalies became routine care. CHANGES IN ETHICAL LANDSCAPE: Both of these innovations were discussed with the Ethics Committee. Neither were subjected to further ethical overs

The sterile society: hyperselection and the loss of adaptive variance.

Self-organizing systems utilize information to maintain ordered states. With competitive pressure, these systems optimize toward proxies of … nments. The detrimental impact of hyperselection and an overly optimized world-from pop culture and academia to urban design and wellbeing-are discussed in terms of their active role in creating evolutionary mismatch and the importance of seemingly "inefficient" processes as sources of adaptive input.
