At-risk children of at-risk parents: assessing common injuries to the children of teenage parents.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the common injuries in the children of teenage parents seen in the emergency department (ED) of a large level I trauma center. STUDY DESIGN: We used admission records for guarantor age to assess common injuries. RESULTS: The majority of the patients were white, in the care of the mother, and suffered accidental injuries, with bruising and skin marks the most common. Although children born to teenage parents are at an increased risk for child abuse, the rate of abuse in this study sample remained low. Falls and ingested objects were the leading mechanisms of injury in th…

Resuscitation injuries complicating the interpretation of premortem trauma and natural disease in children.

Minor soft tissues injuries are common in both adults and children who have had cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Potentially life-threatening injuries are rare. The pre-arrest history in a resuscitated adult often assists the pathologist to interpret autopsy findings. In contrast, an infant or child may not have a reliable history. In this situation, it may be difficult if not impossible to distinguish resuscitation injuries from pre-existing accidental or inflicted trauma. I describe two children who had significant autopsy-documented injuries initially attributed to abuse. The State file

Strategic Care of Ballistic Injuries: A Retrospective Observational Study at a Moroccan Military Hospital.

Background Ballistic trauma from high-velocity projectiles causes severe multisystem injury and rapid physiological decline. While well-characterized in combat and civilian violence, accidental firearm injuries during military training remain understudied. These incidents typically affect young, unprotected individuals in settings with limited prehospital care factors that may influence injury patterns and outcomes. This study aims to describe the clinical features, injury profiles, and management of accidental ballistic trauma in a military training context, with implications for prevention,

[Development of Human Vital Signs and Body Posture Monitoring and Positioning Alarm Systems].

In view of the high incidence of malignant diseases such as malignant arrhythmias in the elderly population, accidental injuries such as falls, and the problem of no witnesses when danger occurs, the study developed a human vital signs and body posture monitoring and positioning alarm system. Through the collection and analysis of electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration (RESP) and acceleration (ACC) signals, the system monitors human vital signs and body posture in real time, automatically judges critical states such as malignant arrhythmias and accidental falls on the local device side, and then…

Heterologous Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Treatment of Severe Skin Damage.

Accidental soft tissue injuries are a frequent injury. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an interesting therapeutic option for wounds and skin damage. In this case report, we describe a 37-year-old man that presented to our ward of pain medicine for an accidental severe leg injury associated with skin and soft tissue loss, with severe pain and poor sensation. History revealed the use of recreational drugs without viral infections or systemic diseases. Wound debridement, wound dressings, systemic antibiotics (amoxicillin 1000 mg tid and azithromycin 500 mg od), and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory d

3 Cases of Inflicted Skull Crush Injuries in Infants.

We describe 3 infants with skull fractures that involved more than 1 skull bone. On further evaluation, 2 of the 3 infants had additional fractures at other sites of the body and the third infant had concerning bruising of the face. Although an accidental mechanism of injury was initially given as the history in each case, law enforcement investigations led all 3 fathers to confess to crushing their infants' skulls out of frustration. These crushes were caused by their arms or hands. Bilateral skull fractures or those involving more than 1 skull bone can be seen in falls as well as in crush in

[Hydrogen peroxide-induced lesions in the digestive tract. Apropos 4 cases].

Gastrointestinal injury caused by caustic products a are relatively infrequent, occurring mainly in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Accidental ingestion accounts for most of the cases, and the severity and extent of damage produced, depends on the composition and volume of the caustic agent ingested; endoscopy is a safe and effective diagnostic procedure. We report four unusual cases of caustic injury of the gastrointestinal tract due to hydrogen peroxide, two cases due to oral ingestion and another two due to the accidental administration of enemas, there was a good clinic and endoscopic re

Inflicted traumatic brain injury in infants and young children.

This article will discuss the subject of inflicted or abusive head injury in infants and young children. Inflicted neurotrauma is a very common injury and a frequent problem in attempting to distinguish between inflicted and accidental injury. Inflicted head injury occurs usually in the home in the presence of the individual who has inflicted the injury outside the view of unbiased witnesses. Distinguishing between inflicted and accidental injury may be dependent upon the pathological findings and consideration of the circumstances surrounding the injury. The most common finding in an inflicte

Needlestick and infection with horse vaccine.

This report describes a case of accidental needlestick injury involving a live equine vaccination, Equilis StrepE. A vet presented herself to the Emergency Department having accidentally injected herself with an equine vaccination. Her left thumb (injury site) was inflamed and had lymphangitis progressing proximally along her left arm. Her inflammatory markers were not raised. The swelling, erythma and lymphangitis had improved markedly with intravenous antibiotics. She had no sequelae at follow-up. Equilis StrepE is a vaccine for submucosal administration containing a modified live avirulent

Accidental diode laser-induced full-thickness macular hole: a case report.

Accidental ocular injuries caused by laser devices used in non-medical settings are rare but potentially vision-threatening. This case report describes a 24-year-old woman who sustained a full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) in the right eye following accidental diode laser exposure during a hair removal procedure at a beauty center. The injury occurred when the laser probe was inadvertently activated, striking the patient's unprotected eye. The patient presented with profound visual loss in the affected eye, with visual acuity reduced to the level of hand motion. Comprehensive ophthalmological

Skeletal trauma in child abuse.

Fractures and other skeletal injuries are common in childhood. Most are the result of falls, motor vehicle accidents, and other forms of accidental trauma. However, skeletal trauma is present in a significant number of abused children. Age and developmental abilities are key components in raising clinical suspicion for child abuse. Children who are unable to provide their own history because of age or developmental delay require increased attention. Younger children are more likely to have abusive fractures, whereas accidental fractures increase with age and developmental abilities. The conseq

Radiation damage to the lung: mitigation by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.

Concern regarding accidental overexposure to radiation has been raised after the devastating Tohuku earthquake and tsunami which initiated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan in March 2011. Radiation exposure is toxic and can be fatal depending on the dose received. Injury to the lung is often reported as part of multi-organ failure in victims of accidental exposures. Doses of radiation >8 Gray to the chest can induce pneumonitis with right ventricular hypertrophy starting after ∼2 months. Higher doses may be followed by pulmonary fibrosis that presents months to years after exposu

Harm From Foreign Body Ingestion in Adults and Children: A Systematic Review of Case Reports.

Intentional and accidental foreign body ingestion is a common presentation seen in emergency medicine, with clinical characteristics and patterns in intentional and accidental foreign body ingestion in adult and paediatric populations being well documented in some foreign body groups, but not others. We conducted a systematic review of case reports and case series from EMBASE, Medline/PubMed, and CINAHL/Ebsco. Of 783 relevant papers, 199 were retrieved after screening, with 120 included in the final analysis. Cases involving magnets and batteries were excluded due to well-documented risks. A w

Morbidities associated with suicide mortality in the USA according to education using death certificates from 2010 to 2019.

OBJECTIVES: To identify relationships between multiple causes of death information and a decedent's sex and education in suicide compared with accidental deaths. METHODS: Based on the US Mortality Multiple Cause-of-Death Public Use Record from 2010 to 2019, we performed correspondence analysis to visualise the relationships between comorbidity and sex-education profiles of individuals who died by suicide, and logistic regression models to estimate the odds that a comorbidity group is associated with suicide deaths relative to accidental deaths. RESULTS: Sex and education are important factor

Rare chemical injuries: a case of ocular superglue instillation in Port Harcourt.

BACKGROUND: Ocular superglue injury is uncommon all over the world. AIM: To report a case of self-inflicted accidental ocular superglue injury. METHODS: A case of ocular injury is described in a 29-year-old adult, following inadvertent instillation of superglue instead of a prescribed steroid ointment into the right eye, in the dark. RESULTS: There was matting of the upper and lower lid margin and eyelashes precluding view of the ocular structures. The eyelids were separated by gently peeling off the superglue from the lids and lid margins. The glue-matted eye lashes were trimmed and the gl

Paediatric hypopharyngeal perforation: child abuse until proved otherwise?

A case of paediatric hypopharyngeal perforation in a 7-month-old infant is reported. The diagnosis was delayed because it was not considered. It later transpired that the injury had been inflicted by one of the child's parents. Criminal proceedings were successfully brought against both parents and the child and his siblings were taken into foster care. A review of the available literature on paediatric hypopharyngeal perforation, excluding iatrogenic and external trauma mechanisms of injury suggests that non-accidental injury is by far the most common aetiology. Suspected child abuse remains

Case-based analysis to assess the validity of the Hat Brim Line Rule in cranial trauma.

This study aims to evaluate the forensic reliability of the Hat Brim Line Rule (HBL Rule) in differentiating between accidental falls and intentionally inflicted blunt head trauma. Given the frequent diagnostic ambiguity in cranial injuries, particularly in forensic autopsies, the HBL Rule offers a potentially useful anatomical reference point for assessing the origin of skull fractures. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 78 anonymized autopsy reports from the digital archive of the Institute of Legal Medicine in Berlin, spanning from 2008 to 2024. Each case was classified based on the

Inferior mesenteric artery laceration associated with blunt abdominal trauma with Casper's sign in a physically abused child: An autopsy case and literature review.

There have been few studies of the death of children secondary to child abuse-related abdominal compression, and the detailed pathophysiology of such deaths is therefore unknown. The autopsy findings of a 3-year-old boy who died of hemorrhagic shock due to non-accidental severe blunt abdominal trauma were compared to those of children who died of other non-accidental abdominal injuries. Old and acute subcutaneous hemorrhages, abrasions, and scars were present all over the subject's body. No superficial injuries were found on the ventral midline, but a minor hemorrhage was found in the subcutan
