Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) has been widely used in skin grafting to provide a dermal layer for facilitating graft take and mature scarring. This randomized controlled, double-blinded superiority study aimed to quantitatively assess the effects of this technique on the resulting graft sites via functional measurements including elasticity, humidification, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), pigmentation, and erythema at 6 months after surgery. A survey was performed to evaluate the satisfaction levels of both patients and surgeons. We considered patients with full-thickness skin defects for wh

Reconstruction of complex Achilles tendon defects involving both the tendon and the overlying soft tissues represents a challenging scenario for plastic surgeons. In this report, we present an innovative technique of hybrid total Achilles tendon reconstruction combining acellular dermal matrix placement to restore the full-thickness continuity of the tendon and free latissimus dorsi (LD) flap coverage to allow graft integration and simultaneously resurface the soft tissue defect, ultimately leading to lower limb salvage. Between August 2023 and February 2024 two patients received microsurgical

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Pelvic exenteration (PE) is an aggressive surgical procedure that implies a large hard-to-fill pelvic defect. Different reconstruction techniques were proposed to improve abdominal organ support and reduce complications (infections, pelvic organs herniation, vaginal stump dehiscence, bowel prolapse and obstruction) [1], with conflicting results [2]. Because of young age and survival greater than 50% at 5 years in patients with no residual tumor after surgery [3], a new approach with better clinical results to pelvic reconstruction is needed.
DESIGN: The aim of this surgical f

BACKGROUND: Tissue expansion for treating giant congenital melanocytic nevi (GCMN) is a commonly used surgical method. However, the procedure's efficacy is often hindered by anatomical and histologic characteristics and blood supply, particularly in the extremities and trunk. Enhancing expansion efficiency while reducing complications is thus a topic to be investigated, especially for pediatric patients undergoing rapid physical and psychological development with higher risks of noncompliance to medical instructions. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of expansion in ex

BACKGROUND: Biomechanical studies have demonstrated that standard pectoralis major tendon (PMT) repairs have inferior strength compared with native tendon.
HYPOTHESIS: Augmentation of PMT repair with an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) will increase the ultimate load to failure.
METHODS: Eighteen cadaveric specimens were allocated to 3 repair groups: standard repair (SR); augmented repair (AR) with ADM; and intact, native tendon (NT). Specimens were tested for cyclic elongation, linear stiffness, load to 5 mm displacement, maximum load to failure, and method of failure.
RESULTS: Maximum load t

Acellular human dermal allografts have been shown to be effective for soft-tissue implantation. We compared treatment outcomes of tympanoplasty using tragal perichondrium and acellular human dermal allograft (MegaDerm®). In a prospective randomised controlled study, 60 patients scheduled to undergo tympanoplasty were randomly assigned to the autologous tragal perichondrium group (n = 33) or acellular human dermal allograft group (n = 27). Postoperative hearing gain, graft success rate at 1 and 6 months and operation times were compared between groups. Graft success rate, defined as the complet

Sygnathia, or fusion of the jaw, is a rare condition in children, occurring either in isolation or as part of a larger overall syndrome. Consequences of this bony fusion may range from feeding difficulties to a complete inability to protect the airway. Owing to the uncommon nature of this problem and the high recurrence of bony fusion, standardized treatment protocols do not yet exist, making individual reports particularly useful for guiding the first-time management of such patients. In this report, we describe the case of a male infant with complete bony fusion of the right zygomatic maxill

INTRODUCTION: The extent of the abdominal wall defect in people with classic bladder exstrophy (CBE) varies, and can be extensive. In this study, human acellular dermis (HAD) was used to bridge the fascial gap, as an alternative to osteotomy, to support a fascial repair of the abdominal wall, and as a filler in selected cases of CBE.
OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the efficacy of the employed techniques of using HAD within the bladder exstrophy population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of six males, born with CBE, and who had abdominal wall defects were reviewed. Two children, aged 6…

Various surgical treatment modalities have been advocated for the treatment of Dupuytren's disease. However, recurrence following surgical treatment of Dupuytren's disease remains a common problem. Previous studies have demonstrated lower recurrence rates with use of a full-thickness skin graft. We therefore postulated that use of acellular dermal matrix may be associated with a similar outcome, based on the common inhibitory effect on underlying myofibroblasts. We performed a retrospective cohort study of 43 patients undergoing open fasciectomy for Dupuytren's disease from years 2005 to 2012

OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) in immunocompromised patients' wounds has been little studied. The present study aimed to determine the wound healing effects of ADM in immunocompromised patients compared with patients with normal immune function.
METHOD: Between June 2015 and July 2020, medical records of patients treated with ADM for wounds were scrutinised in this retrospective cohort study. Patients exposed to immunosuppression were age- and wound area-matched to patients without immunosuppression. All wounds were treated with ADM without further surgical treatment

BACKGROUND: This multicenter, randomized controlled trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of PermeaDerm, a biosynthetic wound matrix, compared to porcine acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for the treatment of partial-thickness burns in Chinese patients.
METHODS: A total of 184 patients were enrolled and randomized 1:1 to receive either PermeaDerm or ADM across the four Chinese centers. The primary endpoint was the proportion of wounds that achieved complete re-epithelialization by day 14 (superficial partial-thickness burns) or 21 (deep partial-thickness burns). The secondary endpoints included

Multiple adjacent gingival recessions (MAGRs) are commonly treated with autogenous grafts. However, several intra- and postsurgical complications have been described following autogenous grafts, leading clinicians to explore the use of different biomaterials to treat these conditions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the root coverage outcomes of a novel porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix (PADM) in combination with the tunneled coronally advanced flap (TCAF) for the treatment of MAGRs. Ten patients with 33 type 1 recession defects (RT1s) were treated with PADM + TCAF. The

BACKGROUND: Implant-based breast reconstruction (IBBR) can be performed using a variety of biological and synthetic meshes. However, there has yet to be a consensus on the optimal mesh. This study investigates the safety and patient satisfaction of using TiLOOP® Bra in IBBR and compares its postoperative complication risk with that of porcine acellular dermal matrix (ADM) and SERAGYN® BR.
METHODS: The literature review was performed via PRISMA criteria, 23 studies met the inclusion criteria for the TiLOOP® Bra review, and 5 studies met the inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. Patient cha

BACKGROUND: Prepectoral breast reconstruction is being increasingly popularized, largely because of technical advances. Patients with ptotic breasts and active cancer require mastectomies through a mastopexy excision pattern to achieve proper pocket control in a prepectoral single-stage operation. This article presents a single-surgeon experience with direct-to-implant, prepectoral reconstruction following skin-reducing mastectomies.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified all patients undergoing prepectoral, direct-to-implant breast reconstruction following Wise-pattern mastopexy fr

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are slow to heal because of poor tissue vascularity and regenerative capacity, among various factors.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, the authors evaluate the efficacy of applying a paste formulation of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) to DFUs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with Wagner grade 2 or 3 DFUs (N = 49) received either ADM paste (treatment group; n = 23) or conventional foam dressing (control group; n = 26). All chronic wounds were debrided and irrigated in an attempt to control infection. After paste application, mild compaction was undergone to f

The presence of hard tissue dehiscence and thin periodontal biotype in the esthetic area is a challenge that can jeopardize function and aesthetic outcome of implants. Here, we present a successful simultaneous soft tissue and bone regeneration of dehiscence defects in the maxillary incisor region. The novelty of this case lies in the simultaneous bone regeneration and soft tissue augmentation and the use of acellular dermal matrix as a barrier for regeneration and biotype conversion around dental implants. Reentry surgery 5 months after soft tissue and bone augmentation showed more than 95% n

BACKGROUND: Meaningful data to help guide resource allocation for staged tissue expander/implant-based breast reconstruction are currently lacking. The authors seek to differentiate uneventful from successful reconstruction and identify common outcome pathways and factors that portend a deviation from an uneventful, two-stage, two-operation course.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of expander/implant reconstructions with or without acellular dermal matrix (2003 to 2009) was performed. Related postreconstructive events (including mastectomy flap necrosis, seroma, wound dehiscence, cellulitis,

This retrospective study sought to determine the effectiveness of the acellular human dermal allograft as a bridging device for reconstruction of massive irreparable rotator cuff tears (RCTs). Fourteen patients with an average age of 54.6 years underwent open reconstruction for massive irreparable RCTs. Significant improvement was found for pain and range of motion (ROM). Patient satisfaction was high. The mean American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score improved from 23.8 points preoperatively to 72.3 postoperatively (P = .001). A significant correlation was found between the size of th
