Copper ions play a crucial role in the progression of cancers. Tumor tissue is rich in copper ions, and copper chelators could potentially scavenge these copper ions and thus exert an antitumor effect. A recent study of Nocardia asteroides revealed that 95% of clinical strains had one of five antibiotic resistance patterns. We found the pattern of resistance to cefotaxime and cefamandole in 19% of 200 clinical N. asteroides isolates. Isolates with this drug resistance pattern were from numerous geographic sources and were associated with significant clinical disease (56% of patients had disseminated infections). Widespread use of azole antifungals in agriculture has been linked to resistance in the pathogenic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. We show that exposure of A. fumigatus to the agrochemical fungicide, ipflufenoquin, in vitro can select for strains that are resistant to olorofim, a first-in-class clinical antifungal with the same mechanism of action. Resistance is caused by non-synonymous mutations within the target of ipflufenoquin/olorofim activity, dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH), and these variants have no overt growth defects.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common precancerous condition found on chronically sun-damaged skin, particularly on the face, scalp, arms, and legs. Early and effective treatment of AKs is important to prevent progression to squamous cell carcinoma. Antiepileptic drugs have been known to worsen myasthenia gravis (MG) symptoms, and therefore, in patients who suffer both conditions (myasthenia and epilepsy), treatment selection is difficult.
