Acute and chronic blood pressure response to recurrent acoustic arousal in rats.

Repetitive episodic hypoxia every 30 sec administered chronically to Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats has been shown by previous studies to cause a sustained increase in daytime blood pressure (BP). Acoustic arousal in humans during wake or sleep produces an acute BP rise. The question then arises as to whether chronic episodic acoustic arousal applied with the same frequency and duration as episodic hypoxia induces elevated BP. We exposed 14-week-old (N = 10) SD rats in individual cages to recurrent buzzer noise (500 Hz, 100 dB) 6 out of every 30 sec, 7 h/day for 35 days. Ten other rats were placed i

[Study of non-visually induced smooth pursuit eye movements and their predictability using pseudorandom target motion].

It has been found that the smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) are elicited by not only visual stimuli but also non-visual information such as the subject's fingertip movement and a moving sound source. We have already reported the quantitative analysis of SPEM which were induced by somatosensory and acoustic information. In the previous study, we used a sinusoidal waveform that could be highly predictable. Since it is wellknown that predictive control has an important role in the normal SPEM, we expect the predictive control to function in non-visually induced SPEM (NVSPEM). We quantitatively

Behavioral entrainment to rhythmic auditory stimulation can be modulated by tACS depending on the electrical stimulation field properties.

Synchronization between auditory stimuli and brain rhythms is beneficial for perception. In principle, auditory perception could be improved by facilitating neural entrainment to sounds via brain stimulation. However, high inter-individual variability of brain stimulation effects questions the usefulness of this approach. Here we aimed to modulate auditory perception by modulating neural entrainment to frequency modulated (FM) sounds using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). In addition, we evaluated the advantage of using tACS montages spatially optimized for each individual'

The influence of tympanic-membrane orientation on acoustic ear-canal quantities: A finite-element analysis.

Assuming plane waves, ear-canal acoustic quantities, collectively known as wideband acoustic immittance (WAI), are frequently used in research and in the clinic to assess the conductive status of the middle ear. Secondary applications include compensating for the ear-canal acoustics when delivering stimuli to the ear and measuring otoacoustic emissions. However, the ear canal is inherently non-uniform and terminated at an oblique angle by the conical-shaped tympanic membrane (TM), thus potentially confounding the ability of WAI quantities in characterizing the middle-ear status. This paper stu

The Corticofugal Effects of Auditory Cortex Microstimulation on Auditory Nerve and Superior Olivary Complex Responses Are Mediated via Alpha-9 Nicotinic Receptor Subunit.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The auditory efferent system is a complex network of descending pathways, which mainly originate in the primary auditory cortex and are directed to several auditory subcortical nuclei. These descending pathways are connected to olivocochlear neurons, which in turn make synapses with auditory nerve neurons and outer hair cells (OHC) of the cochlea. The olivocochlear function can be studied using contralateral acoustic stimulation, which suppresses auditory nerve and cochlear responses. In the present work, we tested the proposal that the corticofugal effects that modul

Twist and turn into chronic disorders of consciousness: Potential role of the auditory stapedial reflex.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from chronic disorders of consciousness (DOC), including minimally conscious state (MCS) and unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS), typically show an awareness impairment paralleled by a significant reflex hyper-excitability, which depend on the cortical deafferentation following brain-damage-induced thalamocortical system deterioration. Nonetheless, recent studies have shown a residual preservation of cortico-subcortical pathways that may sustain residual fragments of awareness in some DOC patients. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to assess whether the co

Hyperactive auditory efferent system and lack of acoustic reflexes in Williams syndrome.

The auditory efferent system and acoustic reflexes have been investigated in patients with Williams syndrome (WS). Twenty-one patients aged 6-26 years with a genetically confirmed diagnosis of WS and with reported hyperacusis were compared with 21 normally developing age-matched subjects. The medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system was tested by stimulation of the contralateral ear with increasing levels of white noise, while recording transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) in the ipsilateral ear. The suppression effect on the amplitudes of the TEOAE was computed for each contralate

Reversed ipsilateral acoustic reflex: a study on subjects treated with muscle relaxants.

OBJECTIVES: To rule out any possible involvement of the middle ear muscles in the genesis of the reversed ipsilateral acoustic reflex (RIAR). DESIGN: Prospective study to evaluate the effects of muscle relaxants on the RIAR of otosclerotic ears as well as on the acoustic reflex of individuals with normal middle ear function. Admittance recording during ipsilateral acoustic stimulation was performed in patients undergoing pharmacological treatment for surgical procedures. Fentanyl, propofol, and a muscle relaxant were sequentially administered intravenously. Ipsilateral acoustic reflexes were

Analysis of middle ear mechanics and application to diseased and reconstructed ears.

OBJECTIVE: To review current concepts of the mechanical processes of the human middle ear, and to apply them to practical issues in clinical otology and tympanoplasty surgery. BACKGROUND: The wide range of conductive hearing losses associated with middle ear pathology and reconstruction cannot be adequately explained by simple models of middle ear function. METHODS: Variables used to describe the system are sound pressure, volume velocity, and acoustic impedance. The relationship between specific middle ear structures and these variables is described such that inferences can be drawn regardi

Unraveling eye movement-related eardrum oscillations (EMREOs): how saccade direction and tympanometric measurements relate to their amplitude and time course.

Eye movement-related eardrum oscillations (EMREOs) reflect movements of the tympanic membrane that scale with the magnitude and direction of saccades. EMREOs have been consistently described in humans and non-human primates, yet many questions regarding this phenomenon remain unresolved. Based on bilateral in-ear recordings in human participants we here explore several properties of these EMREOs in order to improve our understanding of this signal's origin and functional significance. Our data support that the EMREO time course is comparable between the left and right ears, and between paradig

Audiovisual integration in macaque face patch neurons.

Primate social communication depends on the perceptual integration of visual and auditory cues, reflected in the multimodal mixing of sensory signals in certain cortical areas. The macaque cortical face patch network, identified through visual, face-selective responses measured with fMRI, is assumed to contribute to visual social interactions. However, whether face patch neurons are also influenced by acoustic information, such as the auditory component of a natural vocalization, remains unknown. Here, we recorded single-unit activity in the anterior fundus (AF) face patch, in the superior tem

The Relevance of Autophagy within Inner Ear in Baseline Conditions and Tinnitus-Related Syndromes.

Tinnitus is the perception of noise in the absence of acoustic stimulation (phantom noise). In most patients suffering from chronic peripheral tinnitus, an alteration of outer hair cells (OHC) starting from the stereocilia (SC) occurs. This is common following ototoxic drugs, sound-induced ototoxicity, and acoustic degeneration. In all these conditions, altered coupling between the tectorial membrane (TM) and OHC SC is described. The present review analyzes the complex interactions involving OHC and TM. These need to be clarified to understand which mechanisms may underlie the onset of tinnitu

Heart rate control by listening to light.

The auditory-cardiac interplay enables sound perception to modulate cardiac rhythm and homeostasis. However, its underlying regulatory mechanism and therapeutic potential remain largely underexplored, due to fundamental limitations in acoustic stimulation precision. Here we present an opto-mechano-cardiac coupling strategy that bypasses the propagation constraints of sound wave to enable precise acoustic modulation of cardiac function. Utilizing dynamically reconfigurable optical traps (1064 nm, 100 kHz refresh rate), we translated musical rhythms into programmable otolith oscillation patterns

Candidate Key Proteins in Tinnitus-A Bioinformatic Study of Synaptic Transmission in the Inferior Colliculus.

Proteins involved in synaptic transmission in normal hearing, acoustic stimulation, and tinnitus were identified using protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. The gene list for tinnitus was compiled from the GeneCards database using the keywords "synaptic transmission" AND "inferior colliculus" AND "tinnitus" (Tin). For comparison, two gene lists were built using the keywords "auditory perception" (AP) and "acoustic stimulation" (AS). The STRING and the Cytoscape data analyzer were used to identify the top two high-degree proteins (HDPs) and the corresponding high-score interaction protein

Toynbee Memorial Lecture 1997. Middle ear mechanics in normal, diseased and reconstructed ears.

A review of the structure-function relationships in normal, diseased and reconstructed middle ears is presented. Variables used to describe the system are sound pressure, volume velocity and acoustic impedance. We discuss the following: (1) Sound can be transmitted from the ear canal to the cochlea via two mechanisms: the tympanoossicular system (ossicular coupling) and direct acoustic stimulation of the oval and round windows (acoustic coupling). In the normal ear, middle-ear pressure gain, which is the result of ossicular coupling, is frequency-dependent and smaller than generally believed.

Influence of auditory stimulation and visual attention on otoacoustic emissions.

Transient Evoked otoacoustical Emissions (TEOAEs) express the micromechanical activity of the cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs). The inhibitory effects of contralateral acoustic stimulation and of visual attention tasks on TEOAE amplitude is well-established. Contralateral auditory stimulation and attention affect cochlear micromechanics via the medial olivocochlear efferent system. The present study is a quantitative comparison of the individual and combined effects of these two inhibitory phenomena in the same subjects. TEOAEs were recorded in seven normal-hearing subjects in absence of inhib

Tuning acoustic and mechanical properties of materials for ultrasound phantoms and smart substrates for cell cultures.

UNLABELLED: Materials with tailored acoustic properties are of great interest for both the development of tissue-mimicking phantoms for ultrasound tests and smart scaffolds for ultrasound mediated tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In this study, we assessed the acoustic properties (speed of sound, acoustic impedance and attenuation coefficient) of three different materials (agarose, polyacrylamide and polydimethylsiloxane) at different concentrations or cross-linking levels and doped with different concentrations of barium titanate ceramic nanoparticles. The selected materials, bes

Optical stimulation of auditory neurons: effects of acute and chronic deafening.

In developing neural prostheses, particular success has been realized with cochlear implants. These devices bypass damaged hair cells in the auditory system and electrically stimulate the auditory nerve directly. In contemporary cochlear implants, however, the injected electric current spreads widely along the scala tympani and across turns. Consequently, stimulation of spatially discrete spiral ganglion cell populations is difficult. In contrast to electrical stimulation, it has been shown that extremely spatially selective stimulation is possible using infrared radiation (e.g. [Izzo, A.D., S

[Electric response audiometry (brain stem potentials and late potential N1) in patients with acoustic neurinoma or space-occupying lesion in the region of the brain stem].

In patients with acoustic neuronoma or space-occupying lesion in the region of the brainstem we recorded preoperatively the brainstem potentials as well as the late potential N1. With one exception all patients investigated showed changes in the brainstem potential pattern. When stimulating monaurally there exists a clear side difference, that means the changes in the potential pattern are more distinct on the side of the tumour than on the opposite side and then only if an obstructive hydrocephalus exists. Moreover we could demonstrate in patients with tumours in the region of the brainstem t
