OBJECTIVES: To estimate the burden, and clinical factors associated with development of Otitis media with effusion (OME) in children with enlarged adenoids.
METHODS: Consecutive eligible patients with adenoid (sometimes with tonsillar) enlargement managed operatively in a period of five years. Patients had no complaints suggestive of hearing impairment. Age, sex, clinical diagnosis, and weight of patients were recorded. Otoscopic, audiometric, and radiological examinations findings were recorded. Tympanometry patterns were classified according to Jerger's classification; type B and C tympanog…

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (LACC) is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm. The etiology of LACC remains unknown, and it is characterized by multiple recurrences, slow progression, and late distant metastasis. This study aimed to provide more information regarding the characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of LACC by analyzing 3 clinical cases and reviewing the literature on this topic.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we present all 3 cases of LACC within the period between 2010 and 2019. Dyspnea was the most commonly observed symptom in these patients, followed by hoarseness,

Primary malignant tumors of the trachea are very rare with the incidence of less than two per million people per year, and only ten percent of them are adenoid cystic carcinomas. Eighty percent of all tracheal tumors are malignant. Diagnosis is usually late because the symptoms mimic other conditions such as asthma. Clinical picture may sometimes be dramatic when airway is almost closed and emergency recanalization is necessary. Diagnosis is made by chest computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging. Definitive treatment is surgical resection alone or followed by radiation therapy or

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) isolated in the mastoid is very rare. Its diagnosis, especially in the early stage, is often challenging as during that stage, the signs and symptoms may be nonspecific. Our paper describes a case of a patient with an isolated mass in the left mastoid with persistent peripheral facial paralysis, and this was initially diagnosed as facial neuritis and granulation. However, histological examination later revealed an ACC exhibiting tubular and cribriform patterns. Our paper discusses the diagnostic basis, treatment, and outcomes for this case to improve the understa

OBJECTIVES: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the trachea and bronchus is rare, representing 1% of all respiratory tract cancers. We presented our experiences in treating tracheal-bronchial ACC and the results of long-term surveillance.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of treating tracheo-bronchial ACC. From 2009 to 2014, 42 patients presented to our department. All of them received surgical resection and adjunctive therapy.
RESULTS: R0 resections were achieved in 33 patients, whereas 15 patients whose lesions spread outside the tracheo-bronchial lumens. Nine patients had R1 resec

RATIONALE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) rarely occurs in the digestive tract, particularly in the gastroesophageal junction.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 44-year-old male vomiting blood was admitted to our hospital. Endoscopic ultrasound showed a 2.2 × 3.0 cm submucosal tumor in the gastroesophageal junction.
DIAGNOSIS: According to the histopathological examination, the tumor was composed predominantly of ductal epithelial and myoepithelial cells. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that the tumor expressed cytokeratin, cluster of differentiation 117, p63, and calponin. Based on these findings,

BACKGROUND: Distant metastasis of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is most commonly identified in the lung, but risk factors are still on debate.
METHODS: Risk factors for lung metastasis were evaluated by using Cox proportional hazards model and Kaplan-Meier curves.
RESULTS: Of 112 patients, 48% had distant metastasis; 94.4% of whom had lung metastasis. Univariable analysis revealed sublingual or minor salivary gland, tumor size ≥2.5 cm, and perineural invasion as risk factors (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.99 [1.02-3.91], 2.57 [1.19-5.58], and 2.46 [1.28-4.74], respectively), whereas size, perineural

Waldeyer's lymphatic ring granulomas in children are infrequent, and may represent an underlying systemic disease, often nondiagnosed before adenotonsillectomy is performed. The authors report on a 5-year-old otherwise healthy girl presented with remarkable tonsillar asymmetry as well as adenoid hypertrophy, with no systemic signs or complaints. Adenotonsillectomy was performed to rule out malignancy. Blood workup was normal. Microscopy of both adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy specimens showed multiple foci of epithelioid, noncaseating granulomas with giant multinucleated cells surrounded by no

While adenoid cystic carcinoma is a common malignancy to arise within the salivary glands (21.9%) (Kokemueller et al. in Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg 33:25-31, 2004), it is seldom encountered as a tracheal mass and represents < 1% of all lung cancers. Tracheal tumors are an uncommon cause of dyspnoea due to their relatively rare occurrence (Baydur and Gottlieb in JAMA 234:829-831, 1975). They pose considerable diagnostic challenge clinically as their symptoms mimics more commoner ailments like asthma and chronic bronchitis. As they carry good prognosis, a timely diagnosis is highly warranted for

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with the pathogenesis of several diseases in both adults and children. However, there have been no reports on the prevalence and amount of EBV in the adenoids of adults; thus, it is important to investigate these in the adenoids and tonsils of adults and children. In this study, 67 patients who underwent tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy were included and divided into two groups: adults aged ≥ 16 years (n = 35) and children aged <16 years (n = 32). Patients' adenoid and tonsil tissues were analyzed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction for EBV DN…

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of Bartholin's gland is a rare gynecologic malignancy. We report a case of locally advanced ACC of Bartholin's gland. A 62-year-old presented with left Bartholin's gland carcinoma and underwent left radical vulvectomy, left-sided inguinal-femoral lymph node dissection, posterior pelvic exenteration, and pedicle abdominal muscle flap. On her 3 months follow-up exam she was disease free.Pelvic exenteration for thetreatment of this rare disease in the vulva is a potential curative option.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the sublingual gland is an extremely rare neoplasm. The clinicopathological characteristics of ACC are slow-growing swelling with or without ulceration, perineural spread, local recurrence, and distant metastasis. This report describes a 58-year-old male who had a slowly growing swelling without ulceration on the right side of the mouth floor that had been present for 1 month. In a radiological examination, the mass showed multilocular cystic features and no bony or tongue muscle invasion. No enlarged cervical lymph nodes were detected. Excisional biopsy and h

Primary malignant tumors of the trachea are uncommon. The authors report a case of a 72-year-old female who died from asphyxia due to an undiagnosed obstructing adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea. The decedent became unresponsive while eating cereal and was pronounced upon arrival at the local hospital. The autopsy revealed a near occlusive tumor mass just superior to the bifurcation of the distal trachea. There was no evidence of aspiration. The death was the result of asphyxia due to obstruction of the trachea by an adenoid cystic carcinoma. This case demonstrates that an obstructive tu

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a tumor that can be of primary cutaneous origin or secondary to metastatic disease, most commonly salivary origin. Aside from primary cutaneous and salivary types, ACC of the breast is a rare, more indolent variant. Cutaneous metastases secondary to breast ACC is exceedingly uncommon and not previously reported to our knowledge. We present the case of a 67-year-old woman who developed cutaneous metastasis from primary breast ACC.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) occurs infrequently in the larynx. Consequently, no large samples describing its clinical behavior are available in the literature. Our objective was to use a nationally representative population-based resource to evaluate clinical behavior, patient demographics, and outcomes among patients diagnosed with laryngeal ACC (LACC).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective database analysis.
METHODS: The National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was analyzed for patients diagnosed with LACC between 1973 and 2011. Patie

Laryngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is extremely rare, worldwide. From January 1994 to January 2014, all cases of laryngeal ACC that were diagnosed in the four largest hospitals in Hainan province, were reviewed. Only two such cases were identified. The first patient had a tumor in the subglottic region and the second patient, in the glottic region. The patient with subglottic ACC, who had experienced ongoing symptoms for 3 years, had previously been diagnosed with asthma, at a local hospital. Both presented at an advanced stage. The patient with subglottic disease received a total laryng

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare neoplasm that originates from secretory glands, most commonly from the salivary glands. We present a 76 year-old white man with a history of adenoid cystic carcinoma from the base of the tongue diagnosed 15 years prior to the development of the metastatic lesion on his mid-posterior scalp. The present case represents the second reported instance of an extracutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma metastasizing to the scalp. Differentiating between a primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma and an extracutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma metastasizing to cutaneous
