The effect of additional oral ofloxacin administration was evaluated in 19 HIV-negative patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Their mean duration of illness was 3.6 years. Based on chest roentgenograms, 13 patients had advanced disease and 6 had moderate disease. The infections were secondary to trauma and laceration received during treatment with an oral calcium preparation which was given to treat post-parturient hypocalcemia. A 72-year-old female was admitted because of a palpable hard tumor, 15 X 7 cm in size, in the left lower quadrant of the abdomen. According to a diagnosis of retroperitoneal tumor, laparotomy was performed, revealing a large tumor extending between the descending colon and the pelvic cavity, which could not be separated from the retroperitoneum, uterus, left ovary, urinary bladder or rectum. A number of metastatic nodules were disseminated to the peritoneum and mesenterium. The pathological diagnosis of the nodules was poorly differentiated carcinoma of transitional cell type, origin unknown.

Oral cloxacillin was used for chronic suppression of a 59-year-old woman with staphylococcal osteomyelitis. She received 380.5 gm of cloxacillin over 263 consecutive days. Severe agranulocytosis followed, reverting rapidly to normal with cessation of drug. The absence of signs of an allergic reactions such as rash, fever, or eosinophilia suggests that cloxacillin, like other semisynthetic penicillins, may exert a direct bone marrow toxicity.
