Day hospital program for anorexia nervosa in children and adolescents: Assessment, management and specific focus on early onset anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: The French day hospital program specialized in eating disorders (ED) opened in January 2018. Our study presents preliminary data on clinical profiles of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). We describe more specifically clinical characteristics of patients with early onset AN and according to their therapeutics orientations. Then, we compare the weight gain of patients managed only in day-patient (DP) treatment with those managed initially inpatient (IP) treatment and relays in DP. METHODS: Ninety-two patients with AN, aged between 8 and 18 years, were evaluated with several que

A Brief Measure Assessing Adolescents' Daily In-Hospital Function Predicts Pain and Health Outcomes at Home After Major Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Pain-related function is not routinely assessed in the hospital. This prospective cohort study examined whether patients' daily pain-related function during hospitalization, based on the validated Youth Acute Pain Functional Ability Questionnaire (YAPFAQ), is associated with pain and quality of life. DESIGN: The YAPFAQ is a 12-item measure assessing functional parameters of recovery related to pain and has been validated in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease and after surgery. Adolescents undergoing major musculoskeletal surgery (n = 93) completed the YAPFAQ daily fo

Academic performance in adolescent offspring of mothers with prenatal and perinatal psychiatric hospitalizations: A register-based, data linkage, cohort study.

BACKGROUND: This is the first study to investigate the longitudinal association between prenatal and perinatal psychiatric hospitalizations and academic achievements in adolescent offspring. METHODS: We conducted an administrative health data-based cohort study of 168, 528 mother-offspring pairs using linked data obtained from health and educational registries in New South Wales, Australia. Prenatal and perinatal maternal psychiatric diagnosis was measured by using ICD-10. The National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) was used to assess the educational performance of the

BDNF levels in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa increase continuously to supranormal levels 2.5 years after first hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) influences brain plasticity and feeding behaviour, and it has been linked to anorexia nervosa in numerous studies. Findings in mostly adult patients point to reduced serum BDNF levels in the acute stage of anorexia nervosa and rising levels with weight recovery. However, it is unclear whether this increase leads to normalization or supranormal levels, a difference that is potentially important for the etiology of anorexia nervosa and relapse. METHODS: We measured serum BDNF at admission (n = 149), discharge (n = 130), 1-year follow-up (n =

Intervention in emotional abilities for adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus in a hospital setting: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is one of the most frequent chronic endocrine diseases in the paediatric population. As a result, this disease has a strong impact on psychological well-being. In line with this, emotional factors play an important role in adaptation. The aim of the present study protocol is to design an emotional abilities programme to improve metabolic control assessed by haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) samples. Specifically, this intervention will be focused on adaptive coping strategies to deal with unpleasant emotions associated with T1DM. The primary aim of this proj

Contribution of the use of basic telemedicine tools to the care of children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis at the Puerto Montt Hospital, Chile.

UNLABELLED: Children and adolescents with rheumatologic diseases require specialized and comprehensive care, but pediatric rheumatologists and immunologists are concentrated in hospitals with specific, high-cost and modern technology. Considering that some patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) live in rural, remote and limited accessibility areas, the use of Telemedicine (TM) can optimize diag nosis, follow-up and prognosis. OBJECTIVE: Reporting 10 years of experience of a mixed care model: face-to-face and distance, using basic TM; the institutional impact, advantages, disadvanta

Applicability of personality disorder criteria in late adolescence: internal consistency and criterion overlap 2 years after psychiatric hospitalization.

We examined internal consistency and criterion overlap of DSM-III-R personality disorder criteria in late adolescence, 2 years after psychiatric hospitalization. A total of 60 adolescents were assessed with the Personality Disorder Examination. Within-category cohesiveness (internal consistency) was evaluated by coefficient alpha and mean intercriterion correlation (MIC). Between-category criterion overlap was evaluated by examining intercategory mean intercriterion correlations (ICMIC) between all pairs of disorders. Internal consistency was low, with alpha less than .70 for all except border

Screening Emotions in Adolescents Receiving Care at the Hospital for mild Traumatic Brain Injury (SEARCH-mTBI): protocol for a multicenter observational study.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a common pediatric condition with growing recognition of its impact on mental health. While most children recover within weeks of the injury, a subset experience persistent emotional symptoms, including anxiety and depression. Early identification of youth at risk for adverse mental health outcomes is essential for timely intervention. Our primary study objective is to develop a robust clinical prediction tool to identify children at risk for adverse mental health outcomes after mTBI. METHODS: We will conduct a multicenter prospective observati

Prevalence of HIV and Hepatitis B virus among adolescents seeking healthcare services at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Kebbi State, Nigeria.

This study examines the prevalence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) among adolescents seeking healthcare services at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria. The rationale for this study is that adolescents represent a critical demographic in the context of infectious diseases, as they often engage in behaviours that increase their risk for HIV and HBV infections. The study made use of a cross-sectional survey involving 300 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years who presented for various health services between January and June 2023. Blood samples were co

Links between eating disorder symptom severity, comorbid psychopathology, and risk for hospital readmission among inpatient adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

Early identification of factors that predict readmission could enhance treatment planning and reduce re-hospitalization. This study evaluated the predictive value of the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) for inpatient readmission for adolescents with AN. This retrospective longitudinal study included 226 adolescent participants admitted to an inpatient eating disorder unit. Adolescents completed the EDE-Q within the first 14 days of admission; demographic variables, anxiety and mood comorbidities, and readmission status within 1 year of discharge were obtained through chart rev
