Neighborhood Disadvantage as a Moderator of Children's Response to a Dyadic Positive Affect Intervention for Children of Mothers with Depressive Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Family promoting positive emotions (FPPE) is a dyadic, positive affect-focused preventive intervention shown to reduce perceived stress and emotional symptoms among children of mothers with elevated depressive symptoms, a population at heightened risk for psychopathology. Emerging evidence suggests that contextual disadvantages (e.g., socioeconomic, neighborhood) may shape vulnerability for major depressive disorder in children. The present study examined whether family- and neighborhood-level disadvantage moderated children's response to FPPE relative to a psychoeducation comparis

How Does Symptom Management Affect Quality of Life in Palliative Care Patients? A Descriptive and Correlation Study.

AIMS: This study aimed to determine the relationship between symptom management and quality of life in palliative care patients. METHODS: Data was collected using the Patient Information Form, the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS), and the EQ-5D Quality of Life Scale. The ESAS rates each symptom from 0 to 10, with scores ≥ 5 indicating moderate-to-severe burden. The EQ-5D index score ranges from -0.59 to 1, with higher scores representing better health-related quality of life. The EQ-5D VAS score ranges from 0 to 100. RESULTS: According to the ESAS, 54.9% of the patients scored ≥ 5 po

Vitamin D status in children with COVID-19: does it affect the development of long COVID and its symptoms?

INTRODUCTION: Long COVID is characterized by diverse symptoms persisting after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Given the immunomodulatory and neuroprotective properties of vitamin D, understanding its role in long COVID symptoms is of growing interest. This study aimed to determine vitamin D status in children with COVID-19 and assess its impact on the clinical course of disease and long COVID development. METHODS: A prospective cohort study included hospitalized children with confirmed COVID-19, aged 1 month to 18 years, diagnosed between September 2022 and Marc

Intersection of alcohol use, pain symptoms, and negative affect in total knee arthroplasty patients and people with HIV.

Alcohol is a well-known analgesic, although excessive alcohol use can lead to hyperalgesia and heightened negative affect. This cross-sectional study examined associations between alcohol use, self-reported pain, and negative affective symptoms in two distinct cohorts of patients vulnerable to chronic pain: individuals undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgery and a cohort of people with HIV (PWH). Participants were enrolled in two clinical studies: a retrospective study of patients undergoing TKA and a longitudinal study of PWH, the New Orleans Alcohol Use in HIV (NOAH) cohort. Based o…

Smoking affects symptom improvement in schizophrenia: a prospective longitudinal study of male patients with first-episode schizophrenia.

Patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) smoke up to three times more than general people. However, there are conflicting results regarding the relationship between tobacco smoke and clinical symptom severity in SCZ. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of smoking on clinical symptoms after antipsychotic treatment in a 12-week cohort study after controlling for confounding factors. One hundred and forty-five male patients with drug-naïve first-episode (DNFE) SCZ received antipsychotic monotherapy for 12 weeks. Symptom severity was assessed at baseline and at week 12 by the Positive and Nega

Can periodontitis affect the COVID-19 severity, symptoms, hospital stay, and mortality? A case-control study.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease have been identified as potential risk factors for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The present study aimed to determine the association between periodontitis and COVID-19 severity, nature of symptoms, mortality, and hospital stay. METHODS: In total, 163 COVID-19-positive patients (men: 93; women: 70) were categorized into two groups: the control group, consisting of 120 patients with asymptomatic or mild symptoms, and the case group, consisting of 43 patients with moderate-to-severe symptoms. The severity of periodontal di

Psychopathological symptoms and their association with the quality of life and the sexual functioning in women affected by systemic scleroderma: a preliminary investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (MIMVS) has become a widely accepted alternative to the standard sternotomy approach for treatment of mitral valve (MV) disease. Because the extent and location of mini-thoracotomies employed for MIMVS vary from center to center, the conclusions regarding superior cosmesis are not generalizable. The totally thoracoscopic periareolar (TTP) - MIMVS technique has been used at our department for minimally invasive cardiac surgery since 2015. AIM: To report early surgical data as well as mid-term outcomes in patients undergoing TTP-MIMVS. MATE

Socioeconomic resources moderate the relationship between maternal prenatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms and infant negative affectivity.

Perinatal maternal depression, anxiety, and stress are associated with poor infant outcomes. However, no known study has investigated the effects of perinatal maternal obsessive-compulsive symptomatology on infant outcomes while considering important situational factors such as socioeconomic resources. Therefore, we investigated the effects of prenatal and postnatal obsessive-compulsive symptomatology on infant behavioral reactivity, beyond the effects of postnatal depressive symptomatology, at 6 months of age. It was expected that socioeconomic resources would moderate this relationship. We r

Pathways to Depressive Symptoms in a Digital Environment: The Role of Trait Affectivity and Mediation of Media Response Styles in Adolescence.

Trait negative affectivity and trait extraversion/positive affectivity are predictive of both responses to affect and depressive symptoms in adolescence. Furthermore, differences in the use of responses to affect are associated with different levels of depressive symptoms. Despite the central role of media content in adolescents' daily lives, responses to affect have not yet been extended to affect in this media content. It is thus unclear whether trait affectivity is predictive of responses to affective media content, and whether such media response styles are predictive of depressive symptom

The role of moment-to-moment dynamics of perceived stress and negative affect in co-occurring ADHD and internalising symptoms.

A maladaptive response to stress in individuals with high ADHD traits may be a key factor explaining co-occurring ADHD symptoms and internalising problems. The current study investigates whether between-person differences in ADHD traits are associated with differences in the within-person moment-to-moment coupling of stress and negative affect; and whether these can explain between-person differences in internalising problems (N = 262, median-age 20). Results of a dynamic structural equation model indicated that between-person differences in ADHD traits significantly moderated the daily life c

Loneliness Is Associated with Depressive Affect, But Not with Most Other Symptoms of Depression in Community-Dwelling Individuals: A Network Analysis.

There is a strong relationship between loneliness and depression, but depression is a heterogeneous disorder. We examined the profile of depressive symptoms most strongly related to loneliness. Study participants were 2007 community-dwelling individuals (median age 31 years, 70.4% women) who completed an online survey on loneliness (single-item question: "never", "sometimes", "often"), depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) and demographics. The relationship between loneliness and depressive symptoms was evaluated with linear regression and network analyses. The prevalence of lon

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms in young women affected with anorexia nervosa, and their relationship with personality, psychopathology, and attachment style.

PURPOSE: Obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OC) are associated with greater morbidity and worse prognosis in anorexia nervosa (AN). We assessed the presence of non-eating OC in participants with AN and related them with their psychopathology, personality, and attachment style features. METHODS: Young women with AN (N = 41, 30 restrictor and 11 binge-purging type) were assessed on the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS). These participants with AN and 82 healthy controls (HC) completed the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2), Symptom Checklist-

Do daily dynamics in rumination and affect predict depressive symptoms and trait rumination? An experience sampling study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rumination has been shown to prospectively predict the onset of depression. However, it is unclear how rumination and affect in daily life influence the development of depressive symptoms. The present study examined whether the structure of dynamics in rumination and affect could prospectively predict depressive symptoms and trait rumination in an undergraduate sample (n = 63). METHODS: The main index used was entropy, which reflects the instability of a system's structure. Momentary rumination and affect were assessed eight times per day for a period of seven days.

Elapsed Time Between the First Symptoms of Breast Cancer and Medical Help-Seeking Behavior and the Affecting Factors.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have determined that the time between women's realization of first symptoms and seeking help from a healthcare professional is more than 1 month. The situation is defined as delay in medical help-seeking behavior (MHSB). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the time elapsed between the first symptoms of breast cancer and MHSB, as well as the factors contributing to the delay. METHODS: In this descriptive study, the data were collected from 132 patients who received a diagnosis of breast cancer and are receiving treatment in the Oncology Clinic of Akd

Cognitive and affective trait and state factors influencing the long-term symptom course in remitted depressed patients.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by a high risk for relapses and chronic developments. Clinical characteristics such as residual symptoms have been shown to negatively affect the long-term course of MDD. However, it is unclear so far how trait repetitive negative thinking (RNT) as well as cognitive and affective momentary states, the latter experienced during daily-life, affect the long-term course of MDD. METHOD: We followed up 57 remitted depressed (rMDD) individuals six (T2) and 36 (T3) months after baseline. Clinical outcomes were time to relapse, time spent wi

Affect recognition among adolescents in therapeutic schools: relationships with posttraumatic stress disorder and conduct disorder symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and conduct disorder (CD) symptoms often co-occur in adolescence, but little is known about whether they show common or distinct emotional processing deficits. METHOD: We examined the effects of PTSD and CD symptoms on facial affect processing in youth with emotional and behavior problems. Teens enrolled in therapeutic day schools (N = 371; ages 13-19) completed a structured diagnostic assessment and the Diagnostic Analysis of Nonverbal Accuracy-2 facial affect recognition task. RESULTS: PTSD symptoms were associated with deficits in the recog

Longitudinal Reciprocal Relationships Between Discrimination and Ethnic Affect or Depressive Symptoms Among Chinese American Adolescents.

Discrimination plays an important role in the development of ethnic minority adolescents. However, previous studies have often adopted a unidirectional model examining the influence of discrimination on adolescent development, thus leaving the potential reciprocal relationship between them understudied. Moreover, there is a dearth of studies on Chinese Americans in the discrimination literature. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the reciprocal relationships between discrimination and two measures of adolescent outcomes (i.e., ethnic affect and depressive symptoms) from early adolescence t

Self-efficacy and affect as mediators between pain dimensions and emotional symptoms and functional limitation in women with fibromyalgia.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of self-efficacy and affect as mediators of the relationship between pain and several fibromyalgia (FM) symptoms (functional limitation, depression, and anxiety). We evaluated 144 women with FM for self-reported pain (numerical pain scale), pressure pain sensitivity (pressure pain thresholds), functional limitation (Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire), self-efficacy (Chronic Pain Self-Efficacy Scale), depression-anxiety (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and positive-negative affect (Positive-Negative Affect Scale). Mediating analyses were
