So far no national or regional studies have been published in Germany regarding the number of fatal aviation accidents and results of autopsy findings. Therefore, we evaluated all fatal aviation accidents occurring in Lower Saxony from 1979 to 1996. A total of 96 aviation accidents occurred in this period involving 73 aeroplanes. An aerial-spray pilot died when his aircraft crashed while he was spraying methomyl. We measured the pesticide in his blood by gas chromatography with flame photometric detection and confirmed the results by mass spectrometry with direct liquid injection through a liquid chromatography interface. The whole blood methomyl concentration was 570 ng/mL.

When catastrophic engine failure occurred on a commercial aircraft, it triggered a cascade of system failures that threatened to overwhelm the flight crew. World airline accident statistics for the period 1960 to 1970 indicate the number of seriously, but nonfatally injured is unlikely to exceed 25% of the occupant capacity of the largest aircraft using an airport. In only 1 accident out of 20 will this number be an underestimate. This estimate may be of value in medical planning for an airport disaster and in the assessment of loads on hospitals.

Concomitant hereditary spherocytosis and sickle cell trait, although extremely rare, could potentially lead to splenic sequestration or infarction. We report here the first case of splenic infarction in a child with hereditary spherocytosis and sickle cell trait while flying on a commercial aircraft. The presence of hypoxia, hemoconcentrated erythrocytes, and sickle hemoglobin created the perfect environment for clinical sequelae.

Recent interest in the relevancy of near vision tests for presbyopic aircrew members has led to the development of a photographic cockpit model. This model is used to prescribe more accurately for flying personnel. Prescriptions can be evaluated by use of trial lenses. This allows the aircrew members to experience the effect of viewing instruments in the cockpit of a C-130 aircraft.
