OBJECTIVE: This study attempted to identify alcoholic inpatients as a population at elevated risk for HIV infection in comparison with other groups. Modes of risk across gender, ethnic and geographic subgroups were explored in order to guide targeted preventive efforts in the future.
METHOD: Structured interviews were conducted with 802 alcoholic inpatients (481 males, 321 females) in New York City and western New York State.

The popularity of the co-dependency concept has grown rapidly in the alcoholism treatment field. At the same time, empirical findings gained through scientific research have raised questions concerning the validity of the concept. This paper discusses some of the problems that are created by the disease model of co-dependency and highlights some alternative views that may be more appropriate. It is argued that the field's understanding of the alcoholic/spouse relationship and its ability to help the spouse are limited unless other conceptualizations are seriously considered.

METHOD: They used data from the National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area project, specifically from the Piedmont of North Carolina. Lymphocytes from alcoholics without liver disease were immunophenotyped by flow cytometry immediately after admission for detoxication and again after 4 to 10 days of abstinence. Measurement of the water content of the cerebral white matter in 26 control and 24 alcoholic cases supports in vivo MRI studies and previous necropsy studies which appeared to show an increase in the water content in the alcoholic group. Zinc and vitamin A concentrations in the serum were measured in 40 alcoholics (33 males and 7 females) and 35 healthy, age-matched subjects (31 males, 4 females). One hundred seventy-three abstinent patients were screened for phobias and avoidant personality disorder. Ninety-six patients were interviewed and diagnosed by two independent assessors who were in agreement on 74% of the diagnoses. In DSM-III terms, over half of the sample (51.4%) met criteria for agoraphobia (8.5%), social phobia (7.8%) and avoidant personality disorder (35.1%). In a follow-up study of 44 female alcoholics, different aspects of outcome were studied. These were alcohol consumption, the use of drugs and psycho-social functioning. Serum glutamate dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.3.) activity was measured in 73 hospital patients who had a history of chronic alcohol abuse and who all had a liver biopsy performed. High levels of serum GDH activity occurred in those patients with recent excess alcohol consumption independently of the underlying liver histology, and did not discriminate between those patients with and those without alcoholic hepatitis.

The ulcerous mutilating acropathy accompanying impairment of the peripheral nervous system, as evidenced by the electrophysiology of chronic alcoholics, formed the subject of a double-blind (isaxonine) survey carried out with a placebo in the case of such patients. The withdrawal of alcoholic beverages was a therapeutic rule in both groups. Healing of perforating plantar ulcers was clearly more frequent in the treated group than in the control group. The improvement was accompanied by an improvement in sensory disorders, particularly superficial tactile sensibility.

The Profile of Mood States was administered weekly to 122 completers and 91 noncompleters of a hospital alcohol rehabilitation program. Ss' initial mood scores were not significant predictors of whether they would complete the program or of whether they would attain abstinence or show improvement in drinking practices at 3-month follow-up.
