Mobile Health for Alcohol Use Assessment: Longitudinal Effects of Breathalyzer Self-Monitoring in Everyday Contexts.

OBJECTIVE: Although mobile health-tracking technologies have burgeoned, offering objective health information to consumers on an unprecedented scale, opportunities to directly test effects of such monitoring have been limited. Low-cost mobile breathalyzers are one tool commonly employed for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) assessment. The authors explored outcomes linked with BAC-tracking technologies, examining effects on alcohol use and self-estimation of BAC levels in a large U.S. sample. METHODS: Participants (N=32,179) were individuals who voluntarily purchased a mobile breathalyzer and

The Role of Teacher Social-Emotional Support in the Prevention of Adolescent ATOD Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We studied alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use (ATOD) among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic, hypothesizing that social-emotional support from teachers during the pandemic would lessen adolescent-reported use of ATOD in the last 30 days. A sample of 3,086 high school youth (51% girls; 45% youth of color) from seven U.S. communities participated in an anonymous online survey between March 2021 and July 2021. Data were analyzed using logistic regressions and structural equation modeling. Teacher social-emotional support predicted greater perceived risk from using ATOD (OR = 1.36-1.73),

Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Interpersonal Violence Within Marginalized Communities: Toward a New Prevention Paradigm.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, reports of domestic violence across the United States increased from 21% to 35%. Stay-at-home orders, designed to protect the public against the spread of COVID-19, along with heightened societal stressors as a result of the global pandemic, inadvertently increased rates of illicit drug and alcohol use, job loss, and isolation, resulting in increased stress and nonphysical (e.g., psychological, emotional, economic, technological) abuse that often escalated to physical violence. These processes were exacerbated in marginalized communities. These risks were heighten

Public perceptions of risk in criminality: the effects of mental illness and social disadvantage.

We examined how different types of mental illness elicited varying levels of predicted criminality and compared this with factors which might also elicit a negative response, specifically, a criminal history and social disadvantage. A sample of 243 participants undertook an anonymous, online experiment. Each participant was exposed to one of six vignettes: three involved mental illness (schizophrenia, depression/anxiety, or alcohol dependency); two in which socio-economic background was manipulated; and a control. The impact of mental illness, history of criminality and social disadvantage on

[The stakes of online gambling in Canada: a public health analysis].

Available data show that online gamblers spend more money and dedicate more time to playing compared to gamblers who do not play online, and are more likely to experience gambling problems. Among online players, young people and poker players show higher rates of gambling problems. These observations can be explained in part by such dangerous aspects of online gambling (and also electronic gaming machines) as: immediate and convenient accessibility; ability to pay electronically and to play on credit; anonymity; and the possibility for players to consume alcohol or other drugs while playing. Obsessional jealousy in a community sample: Association with relationship factors, impairment and perceived treatment needs.

OBJECTIVES: Romantic jealousy could be understood as a continuum, from reality-based, transient and functional jealousy to a more chronic form of jealousy with varying insight, intensity and duration. The latter has some overlaps with obsessive-compulsive disorder (here termed obsessional jealousy). Little is known about the nature of obsessional jealousy and its association with functional impairment, perceived negative consequences (drinking, violence), current and past relationship factors (e.g., length of relationship, being in love, infidelity, previous jealousy) or perceived need for pro

Prevalence of at-risk drinking among a national sample of medical students.

As limited research exists on medical students' substance use patterns, including over-consumption of alcohol, the objective of this study was to determine prevalence and correlates of at-risk drinking among a national sample of medical students, using a cross-sectional, anonymous, Web-based survey. A total of 2710 medical students from 36 U.S. medical schools (1st to 4th year) completed the survey. Included in the instruments was a 10-item scale (AUDIT) to assess at-risk drinking behaviors within the last 12 months. Over 15% of the subjects (n = 412) scored positive for at-risk drinking (>/=

Intimate Partner Violence Among Surgeons: We are Not Immune.

OBJECTIVE: The incidence and risk factors for IPV are not well-studied among surgeons. We sought to fill this gap in knowledge by surveying surgeons to estimate the incidence and identify risk factors associated with IPV. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: An estimated 36.4% of women and 33.6% of men in the United States have experienced IPV. Risk factors include low SES, non-White ethnicity, psychiatric disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, and history of childhood abuse. Families with higher SES are not exempt from IPV, yet there is very little data examining incidence and risk factors among these po

Representativeness of patients enrolled in a primary care clinical trial for heavy/problem substance use.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which participants in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) resemble their broader target groups is of particular concern when studying stigmatized conditions such as substance use disorders (SUDs). The present study compared patients who enrolled in a 4-arm clinical trial of SBIRT (screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment) with eligible patients who declined study participation. METHODS: Participants (N = 1338) were primary care patients who anonymously completed a computer-delivered health survey and screened positive for heavy/problem alcohol or drug u

Smoking in prison: a hierarchical approach at the crossroad of personality and childhood events.

BACKGROUND: Smoking has long been considered part of prison culture and studies have shown a high prevalence of smoking within correctional facilities. METHODS: A self-administered, anonymous questionnaire was administered to 173 male prisoners in the Chalkida prison, Greece. To assess current smoking habits, a hierarchical approach was adopted. The underlying conceptual framework included: (i) demographic parameters, (ii) adverse childhood history (physical abuse, parental neglect, parental divorce, alcoholism in the family, sexual abuse and psychiatric condition in the family), (iii) educat

Are social supports always protective? A seven-city study on heavy drinking among sexual and gender minority young adults experiencing homelessness.

PURPOSE: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults are disproportionately impacted by homelessness and heavy drinking (i.e., having five or more drinks of alcohol in a row within a couple of hours). Social support, in general, is protective in reducing individuals' risk of heavy drinking. However, whether and how support from different sources may have different implications on heavy drinking among SGM young adults experiencing homelessness (SGM-YAEH) remains unclear. Informed by the risk amplification and abatement model (RAAM), this study examined the associations between support sources
