The continued recognition and emergence of alphavirus and flavivirus diseases is a growing veterinary and public health concern. As the global environment continues to change, mosquito-borne diseases will continue to evolve and expand. Continued development of readily available vaccines for the prevention of these diseases in humans and animals is essential to controlling epizootics of these diseases. Further research into effective antiviral treatments is also sorely needed. This article describes equine encephalitis viruses with a focus on clinical and public health considerations.

In early 2011, Australia experienced catastrophic rainfall and flooding, coupled with increased arbovirus transmission. Chikungunya virus, an alphavirus transmitted by mosquitoes, causes chikungunya fever, a non-fatal febrile illness characterized by severe arthralgia and rash. We are reporting on two Chikungunya cases who recently returned from the Thailand-Cambodia border. The first case involved a man who presented with atypical manifestations, including purpura fulminans and multi-organ failure, ultimately leading to death. Conversely, the subsequent case pertains to the spouse of the deceased, who exhibited typical symptoms.

The HIT method was used to examine blood serums of the game in Moravia (roebuck, red deer, fallow deer, mouflon, wild boar, brown hare) for the presence of antibodies to arboviruses of these groups: alphavirus (Sindbis-SIN), flavivirus (West Nile-WN), tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Bunyamwera (Tahyna-TAH, Calovo-CVO). Antibodies to all viruses were detected, and namely in these frequencies: SIN 0.9%, WN 16.9%, TAH 41.5%, CVO 23.1% and TBE 8.5%.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an Aedes-transmitted alphavirus that causes explosive outbreaks of febrile arthritogenic disease. We report a case of chikungunya meningoencephalitis, severe thrombocytopenia and retroperitoneal hemorrhage in an immunocompetent 64-year-old Australian traveler, returning from Sri Lanka in 2025. The infecting strain clustered with the Indian Ocean Lineage that circulated in Sri Lanka during the 2024-2025 outbreak. We highlight the risk of severe chikungunya in travelers returning from destinations with ongoing outbreaks.

On 28 August 2009, French authorities reported five cases of chikungunya fever on Reunion Island: three confirmed, one probable, and one suspected case under investigation. All three confirmed patients presented with an acute febrile syndrome, arthralgia, myalgia and cutaneaous rash. All live in the same area on the western side of the island.

The aim of this review is to follow the history of studies on endemiv arboviruses and the diseases they cause which were detected in the Czech lands (Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia (i.e., the Czech Republic)). The viruses involve tick-borne encephalitis, West Nile and Usutu flaviviruses; the Sindbis alphavirus; Ťahyňa, Batai, Lednice and Sedlec bunyaviruses; the Uukuniemi phlebovirus; and the Tribeč orbivirus. Arboviruses temporarily imported from abroad to the Czech Republic have been omitted. This brief historical review includes a bibliography of all relevant papers.
