Effects of ascorbate-deficiency on collagen secretion and resorption in cultured mouse incisor germs.

The effects of ascorbic acid deficiency on mouse incisors, grown in vitro, has been investigated at the histological and cytological levels. … rane was prematurely disrupted. The dentin mineralization, as well as functional differentiation of ameloblasts were strongly hampered. Chronic deficiency led to disorganization of the dental tissues.

Effect of selenium on developing mouse teeth in culture in vitro.

First molars from 2-day-old mice were cultured for 7 days in medium supplemented with 0.04, 0.4, 4.0 parts/10(6) selenium (Se) or 10 per cent calf serum. Collagen synthesis, measured after labelling with [3H]-proline for the last 24 h of culture, was most active at 0.4 parts/10(6) Se. Supplementation with 300 parts/10(6) Se for the first 24 h of culture caused ultrastructural changes in newly-deposited enamel and dentine matrices.

Effects of ionizing radiation on incisor development of the prenatal mouse.

The effects of 100 rad of X-irradiation of incisor development in CD1 mice were studied. 24 pregnant mice were irradiated on the 12th day po … egrity. The cells of the future pulp were necrotic, and the basement membranes appeared hyalinized. Ameloblasts and odontoblasts were abnormal in morphology and the formation of dental hard tissue was inhibited in places. Complete absence of incisor tooth germ was noted in three of the fetuses.

Primordial Odontogenic Tumor: Report of a Case.

Primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) was first described in 2014. It typically presents in the posterior mandible of a child or adolescent as a "dentigerous cyst-like" well-circumscribed radiolucency associated with an unerupted molar. POT consists of an ellipsoidal mass of dental papilla-like myxoid connective tissue entirely enveloped in a delicate membrane of ameloblastic epithelium. It shows features of a developing tooth with a huge dental papilla, and because it is devoid of dental hard tissue, it could be regarded a soft tissue odontoma. The lesion histologically mimics early (primordial)

Potential of human dental pulp stem cell-derived conditioned medium for amelo-/odontoblastic differentiation of HERS/ERM cells.

HERS/ERM cells constitute the only dental epithelial population that can be isolated from adult human teeth. Although HERS/ERM cells are the most studied dental epithelial cell source, information on their differentiation is lacking: these cells have a long induction period and low mineralization without coculture with dental mesenchymal stem cells. To characterize and develop an effective method for differentiating dental epithelial cells, we observed the epithelial‒mesenchymal interaction effects of deciduous dental pulp stem cell (dDPSC)-derived conditioned media (CM) during HERS/ERM cell d

Compound composite odontoma associated with an impacted cuspid.

This case report involved the removal of a compound composite odontoma from a fourteen year-old male patient at an urban dental school. The pathology report did indeed reveal the tissue mass was that of a compound composite odontoma. These lesions usually occur in the second decade of life, in the anterior maxilla or mandible, with no gender or race predilection. Three types of odontomas are identified, including are: compound composite odontoma, complex composite odontoma, and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma. The etiology of these lesions is unknown, although environmental (trauma, infection) and

Chronic fluoride toxicity: dental fluorosis.

Dental fluorosis occurs as a result of excess fluoride ingestion during tooth formation. Enamel fluorosis and primary dentin fluorosis can only occur when teeth are forming, and therefore fluoride exposure (as it relates to dental fluorosis) occurs during childhood. In the permanent dentition, this would begin with the lower incisors, which complete mineralization at approximately 2-3 years of age, and end after mineralization of the third molars. The white opaque appearance of fluorosed enamel is caused by a hypomineralized enamel subsurface. With more severe dental fluorosis, pitting and a l

A Novel Skeletal Dysplasia With Premaxilla Overgrowth, Gingival Hyperplasia, and Dental Hypercementosis.

This study reports a skeletal disorder marked by facial dysmorphism and a distinct oro-dental phenotype including premaxillary and gingival overgrowth and hypercementosis. Whole-exome sequencing identified a homozygous missense variant in ENPP5 (c.173G>T; p.Gly58Val), affecting a conserved glycine residue predicted to be within a putative active binding site of the ENPP5 protein. In mice, RNA-seq and immunofluorescence confirmed Enpp5 expression in functional osteoblasts of the maxilla and mandible, periodontal ligament, odontoblasts, and ameloblasts. RT-qPCR confirmed region-specific expressi…

[Odontogenic tumors in childhood - case report and review of literature].

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic tumors are a heterogenic group of neoplasias of the oral cavity, whose biological behaviour reaches from true hamartomas to highly malignant tumors. PATIENT: We describe the case of a 4 year old caucasian girl presenting with eruption disturbance of a primary tooth and corresponding maxillary tumor. After surgical removal of the mass, histological examination classified the tumor as ameloblastic fibroodontoma. This very rare neoplasm is of odontogenic origin. DISCUSSION: Following our case report, the variety of odontogenic tumors regarding tumor biology, clinical sym

Odontogenic keratocyst with dentinoid formation.

Although rare, hard tissue deposits, namely dystrophic calcifications and cartilage, have been reported to occur in the connective tissue wall of the odontogenic keratocyst. However, dentinoid formation has not been previously documented. A case involving the left mandibular premolar-molar region in a 37-year-old Malay male is described here along with a brief review on the reported prevalence of hard tissue deposits in the odontogenic keratocyst. Differential diagnosis of this case from other dentinoid-forming odontogenic cysts and tumors-notably calcifying odontogenic cyst, odontoma, amelobl

C-CAM expression in odontogenesis and tooth eruption.

The distribution of the cell adhesion molecule C-CAM was analyzed during tooth development, eruption and formation of the junctional epithelium in rat molars by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. C-CAM could not be detected during odontogenesis until the late bell stage; then only the mRNA was demonstrated in the odontoblasts and ameloblasts. Prior to eruption, a local increase in C-CAM (mRNA and protein) was observed in the reduced enamel epithelium. During eruption, high C-CAM levels were seen in the fusion zone between the oral epithelium and the reduced enamel epithelium. In t…

[Histological study of the resorbed dental crowns of impacted wisdom teeth].

Undecalcified sections of 31 impacted third molars are examined histologically for signs of resorption. Resorption starts at small spots in enamel, progresses to dentin and may even penetrate the pulp cavity. The incidence of such resorption processes increases after the age fifty. A prerequisite for resorption is the loss of reduced ameloblastic epithelium. Histological examination reveals multinuclear giant cells and apposition of spongious bone to destroyed dental substances. The results is dental ankylosis. Because partially resorbed teeth or ankylosed teeth may lead to serious surgical di

Unusual ameloblastoma with extensive stromal desmoplasia.

A clinicopathological study of 5 cases of unusual ameloblastoma was performed. Three cases were characterized by marked stromal desmoplasia. The lesions occurred in the tooth-bearing areas of the anterior or premolar regions of the jaw. They were relatively small and showed a honeycomb appearance radiographically. Histologically, the islands of tumour cells were small and discrete in the widely extended desmoplastic stroma. They lacked obvious ameloblastic polarity in many parts. The other 2 cases were hybrid lesions of desmoplastic and conventional types. The former appeared in the alveolar p
