Blood samples from 425 suspected drugged drivers who were clinically impaired and negative for alcohol were analysed. Fifty-six percent of the samples were positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Tetrahydrocannabinol-positive blood samples were analysed for amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine metabolites and opiates. Eighty-two percent of the samples were found to be positive for one or more drugs in addition to THC, and the concentrations of these drugs were often high. Thus, THC in combination with other drugs seems to be a much more frequent reason for impairment than THC

A 25-year-old man died after an intravenous injection of 100 mg of methedrine. Postmortem studies showed visceral congestion, lung edema, pericardial petechiae, centrolobular necrosis of the liver, and diffuse subarachnoid blood, intracranial vasculitis and cerebritis in the absence of aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations or chronic hypertension. A review of the English-language literature produced 3 other cases of fatal amphetamine-induced intracranial hemorrhage and seven nonfatal cases. Some were the result of overdose, others of hypersensitivity. Angiographic evidence suggests that such

The antisense non-coding RNA in the INK4 locus (ANRIL) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) whose contribution in several human disorders has been verified. In the current projects, we genotyped two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in this lncRNA (rs1333045 and rs1333048) in a population of Iranian patients with bipolar disorder (BP), major depressive disorder (MDD), and methamphetamine addiction. The rs1333045 was associated with methamphetamine addiction in recessive and multiplicative models (OR (95% CI) = 1.867 (1.211-2.877), adjusted p value = 8.75E-03 and OR (95% CI) = 1.415 (1.089-1.

BACKGROUND: Amphetamine injection is expanding in North America and has been associated with male homosexuality among people who inject drugs (PWID). Applying subcultural evolution theory, we examined overall and gender-stratified trends in amphetamine injection and assessed sexual orientation as a gender-specific predictor of initiation among PWID in Montreal, Canada.
METHODS: Data were from HEPCO, an open prospective cohort of PWID. Gender and sexual orientation were self-identified at enrolment. Interviewer-administered questionnaires at three-monthly (HCV RNA-negative participants) or yea

Drug use disorders (DUDs) represent a major global health challenge, leading to substantial morbidity and mortality, while also being compounded by social and structural barriers. In this study, we examined global epidemiological trends in DUDs over the past three decades to inform clinical and public health responses. We extracted data on the incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to DUDs from the 2021 Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study between 1990 and 2021. Age-standardized incidence (ASIR), mortality (ASMR), and DALY rates per 10

This paper summarises data for the prevalence, correlates, and probable adverse health consequences of problem use of amphetamines, cannabis, cocaine, and opioids. We discuss findings from systematic reviews of the prevalence of illicit drug use and dependence, remission from dependence, and mortality in illicit drug users, and evidence for acute and chronic effects of illicit drug use. We outline the regional and global distribution of use and estimated health burden from illicit drugs. These distributions are likely to be underestimates because they have not included all adverse outcomes of

In France, workplace testing of drugs of abuse and psychotropic drugs is rarely performed; meanwhile it is a major public health problem. Furthermore, France is the European country that has been associated with the highest increase of the use of drugs of abuse, particularly cannabis. So workplace biological screening of drugs of abuse and of psychotropic drugs exposure is of major concern. New analytical techniques have been developed during the last years. The authors will consider analytical screening of drugs of abuse and particularly the comparison of analytical techniques applied to urin

BACKGROUND: Electroencephalogram (EEG) microstates reflect momentary localized brain activity and may indicate spontaneous fluctuations within large-scale neural networks. Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) exhibit overlapping compulsive features, however, similarities or differences in whole-brain dynamics on subsecond timescales between patients with MUD and OCD remain unclear.
METHODS: We recruited 127 subjects aged 16 to 55 years, including 45 OCD patients, 44 MUD patients and 39 healthy controls (HCs), and collected resting-state EEG data. The OCD

BACKGROUND: Many studies have concluded that cannabis use disorder (CUD) negatively influences outcomes in first-episode psychosis (FEP). However, few have taken into account the impact of concurrent misuse of other substances.
METHODS: This 2-year, prospective, longitudinal study of FEP patients, aged between 18 and 30 years, admitted to early intervention programs in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, examined the specific influence of different substance use disorders (SUD) (alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines) on service utilization, symptomatic and functional outcomes in FEP.
RESULTS: Drugs

BACKGROUND: Since 2000, heroin use patterns have shifted within the United States. How this change may relate to polydrug use among local heroin users is unknown. Although polydrug use has been studied, user perceptions of drug use in terms of health risks, arrest risk, availability, cost, liking, and dependence have not been considered.
METHODS: Data are presented from a brief, face-to-face survey conducted in 2016 of 200 non-in-treatment heroin users from Cleveland, OH. We assessed the use of and attitudes on alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin, crack cocaine, powder cocaine, and pr
