Anemia is a knowledge-based consultation program for anemic states. It has been built using an artificial intelligence programming scheme, called EXPERT, which was developed at Rutgers University. At present, ANEMIA is able to provide assistance in the diagnosis and management of 64 disease entities. They include iron deficiency anemias, anemias due to chronic disorders, thalassemias, hemolytic anemias, arigenerative anemias, and a few other miscellaneous conditions. ANEMIA was tested against a data base of 220 retrospective and 100 new cases and the overall accuracy in the diagnostic performa…

Sickle cell (drepanocytic) anemia is a hereditary blood disease occurring very rarely in Mexico. A 13-year-old Mexican boy with sickle cell anemia eventually died of a cerebrovascular accident of the brain stem, as shown by computerized tomography (CT). A characteristic moyamoya-like angiographic pattern was demonstrated on bilateral carotid and left vertebral arteriograms. Moyamoya disease has no known etiology, but the characteristic angiographic features of moyamoya have been observed in conjunction with some other disease of known origin (including sickle cell anemia). It is therefore my b…

Enlarged spleen, fever, increased susceptibility to infections, and thrombocytosis, are manifestations of iron deficiency which are relatively specific of pediatric patients. Iron deficiency anemia is part of everyday pediatrics. Patients are referred to the hematologist in the following situations: 1) Therapy is ineffective for one of the following reasons: the hypochromic anemia is not caused by iron deficiency (hemoglobinopathies); iron is less efficiently used because of transferrin deficiency or infectious, inflammatory or cancerous disease; iron therapy is inadequate either because of in…

A 58-year-old patient suffered from severe malabsorption due to agammaglobulinemia. Treated empirically with salicylazosulfapyridine 2--6 g/day, the subjective and objective features of malabsorption regressed. About a year after this treatment she developed a generalized weakness without renewal of the diarrhea; the diagnosis of Heinz body hemolytic anemia was established. In our patient, hemolysis began many months after the commencement of treatment and no deficiency of G6PD or other erythrocyte enzyme or pathological hemoglobin were found.

Anaemia is common in renal insufficiency and has various causes: 1) depressed marrow production of red cells, probably due to reduced production of erythropoietin, though the possibility of direct marrow inhibition on the part of uraemic toxins cannot be ruled out, together with iron deficiency, as occurs in prolonged dialysis management; 2) greater red cell destruction attributable to extraglobular factors and other mechanisms (microangiopathy, drugs, etc.); 3) greater blood loss following thrombocytopenia, reduced platelet adhesivity and agglutinability, dialysis. The main premisses on which

Cytogenetic studies were performed on bone marrow aspirates from seven patients with acquired sideroblastic anemia. In one male patient a 45,X cell line was present in each of three bone marrow aspirates. The remaining six patients had a normal chromosome complement. The abnormal stem line in the bone marrow may be unrelated to the hematologic disorder or may indicate a neoplastic process still latent. The cytogenetic literature on sideroblastic anemia is reviewed.

Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia is characterized by ineffective erythropoiesis and increased numbers of multinucleated red cell precursors in the marrow. This syndrome has been subclassified on the basis of morphologic differences in the red cell precursors. Type I is characterized by megaloblastoid erythropoiesis and macrocytosis; Type II, by normoblastic multinuclearity and normocytosis; and Type III, by frequent giant multinucleated erythroblasts and macrocytes. Type II is further distinguished from the other types by serologic and ultrastructural abnormalities. The patient presented in…
