Groups of young adult and senescent guinea pigs were fed normal and vitamin C deficient diets for 4 weeks and tested for their peritoneal macrophage functions. Serum levels of vitamin C in deficient animals indicated a progressive state of ascorbic acid deficiency and correlated well with the clinical signs and symptoms of scurvy. Fewer macrophages were obtained from the peritoneal cavities of deficient animals and morphologically they were smaller in size. Adverse effects of vitamin C deficiency were enhanced in aged animals. Significantly greater number of aged animals died by 4 weeks of def

With more than 1 200 species, bats and flying foxes (Order Chiroptera) constitute the most important and diverse order of Mammals after Rodents. Many species of bats are insectivorous while others are frugivorous and few of them are hematophagous. Some of these animals fly during the night, others are crepuscular or diurnal. Some fly long distances during seasonal migrations. Many species are colonial cave-dwelling, living in a rather small home range while others are relatively solitary. However, in spite of the importance of bats for terrestrial biotic communities and ecosystem ecology, the

Helium-neon laser LH-75 was used to treat 60 inbred mice and 62 patients with vasomotor rhinitis. The patients were given 10 laser sessions. In animals, all responses of T-lymphocytes were modified. Cyclic changes that developed during laser irradiation were accompanied by immunity suppression or activation. In patients, the count of T- and B-lymphocytes and the leucocyte migration inhibition reaction were measured. The patients with vasomotor rhinitis showed a significant increase of T-lymphocytes and a higher capacity of T-cells to form the migration inhibition factor. The efficacy of laser

Since Cajal discovery of nerve growth cones and their role in the growth, metabolism and destination of the axon in 1890 numerous studies have corroborated with more sophisticated techniques his original findings and ideas. The use of modified Golgi staining, drawing from the camera lucida in 2 combination with electron microscopy and t retrograde biochemical markers have helped to identify the neuronal sites of synapsis. Dynamic studies of the nerve growth cones using time-lapsed video microscopic images of living neuroblast in t culture or the intact animal have demonstrated their protactil

A tuberculin carbohydrate fraction, GAE, in sensitized animals induced a delayed type of skin reactivity and inhibited the migration of macrophages but failed to stimulate lymphocyte transformation in vitro. Tuberculin protein-containing fractions were active in each test. These results show that in vitro lymphocyte transformation is not necessarily a corollary of delayed type hypersensitivity.

Cuterebriasis in small animals is caused by infestation by, and internal migration of, a larva of the Cuterebra fly. This article presents a case of nasal cuterebriasis in a puppy seen at the Louisiana Veterinary Referral Center and reviews the clinical signs and diagnosis of, and treatment options for, Cuterebra infestations. It also describes an unusual treatment plan to successfully remove the larva.

The subchronic effect of mercury on selected immunological parameters was studied in guinea pigs with experimental Ascaris suum infection. HgC1(2) given for 28 days reduced significantly T- and B-cell populations in the lymphoid organs and the phagocytic ability of peritoneal macrophages. The subsequent infection of HgC1(2)-intoxicated animals elevated the studied immunological parameters, but in comparison with infected non-intoxicated guinea pigs they remained significantly suppressed. The mercury compound in infection stressed animals caused a slight alteration of the complement CH50 and AH

OBJECT: Adhesion of leukocytes and their migration into the periadventitial space may be critical in the pathophysiology of vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The cell adhesion molecules involved in this process are lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (CD11a/CD18) and macrophage antigen-1 (CD11b/CD18), which are present on neutrophils/macrophages, and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (CD54), which is present in endothelial cells. A humanized monoclonal antibody (mAb), Hu23F2G, targets CD11/CD18 and prevents leukocyte adhesion to endothelial cells. In this study, systemic

Peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients with suspected tuberculous inflammation of the uveal tissue were examined for their capacity to produce in vitro a migration inhibition factor in the presence of specific antigen. Three modifications of the capillary tube migration technique were used to demonstrate MIF. The indicator cells were guinea pig peritoneal macrophages and human peripheral blood leucoytes. A correlation was found between the migration of indicator cells influenced by lymphocytes from Mantoux-positive donors in the presence of specific antigen and the tuberculin sensitivity.

Islet/β cell dysfunction and death caused by autoimmune-mediated injuries are major features of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been used for the treatment of T1D in animal models and clinical trials. Based on the anti-inflammatory effects of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT), we generated human AAT engineered MSCs (hAAT-MSCs) by infecting human bone marrow-derived MSCs with the pHAGE CMV-a1aT-UBC-GFP-W lentiviral vector. We compared the colony forming, differentiation, and migration capacity of empty virus-treated MSCs (hMSC) and hAAT-MSCs and tested their protective effe

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Endothelial cells are crucial in vascular homeostasis. Dysfunction of endothelial cells is involved in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). High plasma homocysteine (Hcy) correlates with CVD while selenium supplementation counteracts development of CVD. However, the underlying mechanism remained unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of selenium on homocysteine-induced endothelial dysfunction.
METHODS: An animal model of Hcy-induced endothelial dysfunction was established by intragastric administration of L-methionine. Plasma NO and von Willebrand factor (vWF

Recruitment of virus-infected T lymphocytes into the CNS is an essential step in the development of virus-associated neuroinflammatory diseases, notably myelopathy induced by retrovirus human T leukemia virus-1 (HTLV-1). We have recently shown the key role of collapsin response mediator protein 2 (CRMP2), a phosphoprotein involved in cytoskeleton rearrangement, in the control of human lymphocyte migration and in brain targeting in animal models of virus-induced neuroinflammation. Using lymphocytes cloned from infected patients and chronically infected T cells, we found that HTLV-1 affects CRMP

The nematode Spirocerca lupi (Rudolphi, 1809) is widely distributed but mostly occurs sporadically with stable populations only in certain geographic areas. This helminth mainly infects dogs and wild canids. Primary pathology relates to migration of third stage larvae (L3) damaging the thoracic aorta and establishment of adults in nodules in the oesophagus. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of milbemycin oxime in combination with afoxolaner (NexGard Spectra(®), Merial), administered monthly, in preventing establishment of adult worms after experimental infection.

The subchronic effect of copper and mercury on selected immunological parameters in guinea pigs with experimental ascariasis was studied. Cupric sulphate and mercuric chloride administered for 28 days did not suppress the levels of specific circulating antibody in a subsequent Ascaris suum infection. Intoxication of animals significantly inhibited the phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages throughout the experiment. Ascaris suum infection elevated macrophage phagocytic activity but values remained significantly lower in comparison with infected non-intoxicated animals. Both the concurre

Aortic arch interruptions in humans and animal models are mainly caused by aberrant development of the fourth pharyngeal arch artery. Little is known about the maturation of this vessel during normal and abnormal development, which is the subject of this study. Tgfbeta2 knockout mice that present with fourth artery defects have been associated with defective neural crest cell migration. In this study, we concentrated on pharyngeal arch artery development during developmental days 12.5 to 18.5, focusing on neural crest cell migration using a Wnt1-Cre by R26R neural crest cell reporter mouse. PURPOSE: Transketolase (TKT) is expressed extensively in various tissues, modulating functions of metabolism and cell apoptosis. However, the effect of TKT on cardiac fibrosis after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has not yet been explored. METHODS: Firstly, we explored the expression of TKT in patients with AMI and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) by ELISA, and investigated the predictive value of TKT on prognosis of patients with ACS by Cox regression analysis. To elucidate the role of TKT in cardiac fibrosis following AMI, we established AMI animal model by ligating the left anterior descend
