Comparison of custom-moulded ankle orthosis with hinged joints and off-the-shelf ankle braces in preventing ankle sprain in lateral cutting movements.

BACKGROUND: A custom moulded ankle orthosis with hinged joints potentially offers a better control over the subtalar joint and the ankle joint during lateral cutting movements, due to total contact design and increase in material strength. OBJECTIVES: To test the above hypothesis by comparing it to three other available orthoses. STUDY DESIGN: Repeated measures. METHODS: Eight subjects with a history of ankle sprains (Grade 2), and 11 subjects without such history performed lateral cutting movements in four test conditions: 1) non-orthotic, 2) custom-moulded ankle orthosis with hinges, 3) S…

Prone-Position Physical Examination of the Ankle for Chronic Ankle Instability: A Technical Note.

Ankle sprain can lead to chronic ankle instability. Although radiologic imaging contributes to the diagnosis, the most critical step remains a thorough physical examination and patient history. This examination is also essential for identifying risk factors for surgical failure. A rigorous and complete clinical assessment is therefore mandatory before surgical indication. In this article, we describe our complete technique for physical examination of the ankle in the prone position for chronic ankle instability evaluation.

The Effect of Frontal Deformity at the Ankle Joint on Total Ankle Arthroplasty Revision Rate.

The presence of severe coronal plane deformity in the ankle joint is widely recognized as challenging to correct by total ankle joint arthroplasty alone, necessitating additional rearfoot fusion. The primary aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the potential associations between the presence or severity of coronal tibiotalar deformities and adverse outcomes after isolated total ankle arthroplasty, such as revisions and complications. The secondary aim was to analyze the potential associations between comorbidities, demographics, and implant types, and adverse outcomes. Our study'…

Immediate effects of vibration biofeedback on ankle kinematics in people with chronic ankle instability.

BACKGROUND: People with chronic ankle instability are more inverted during initial contact and loading response which may increase the risk of subsequent ankle injuries. Vibration feedback gait retraining causes medial center of pressure shifts but its impact on ankle kinematics remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to understand kinematic ankle changes in people with chronic ankle instability following vibration feedback gait retraining. METHODS: Nineteen participants with chronic ankle instability walked with vibration feedback for 10 min on a treadmill and for one mile in the real…

Effect of individual ankle taping components on the restriction of ankle external inversion moment.

The efficacy of individual taping components to restrain ankle inversion sprain has not been fully understood to date. We aimed to clarify specific taping components that can effectively restrain the amount of angular impulse due to external ankle inversion moments during dynamic ankle motion. Nine participants with chronic ankle instability performed a side-jump with five taping conditions: stirrup, figure eight, heel lock, basketweave, and without taping (control). During the initial landing phase, angular impulses, plantar inclination angle of the whole foot, and plantar flexion angle of th…

Influence of ankle joint plantarflexion and dorsiflexion on lateral ankle sprain: A computational study.

Understanding the mechanism of injury involved in lateral ankle sprain is essential to prevent injury, to establish surgical repair and reconstruction, and to plan reliable rehabilitation protocols. Most studies for lateral ankle sprain posit that ankle inversion, internal rotation, and plantarflexion are involved in the mechanism of injury. However, recent studies indicated that ankle dorsiflexion also plays an important role in the lateral ankle sprain mechanism. In this study, the contributions of ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion on the ankle joint were evaluated under complex combinat…

History of ankle sprain as a risk factor of future lateral ankle sprain in athletes.

Despite the attention and focus lateral ankle sprains receive in athletic training practice and research, they remain the most common injury in many sports. Whereas the functional limitations and time loss from lateral ankle sprains are apparent, consistently reducing their incidence is less certain. One important step in preventing lateral ankle sprains is identifying their risk factors. Although previous literature summaries suggest that specific risk factors are inconclusive in predicting lateral ankle sprains, recent literature investigating the predictors of ankle sprains should be includ…

An examination of ankle, knee, and hip torque production in individuals with chronic ankle instability.

There is some debate in the literature as to whether strength deficits exist at the ankle in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Additionally, there is evidence to suggest that knee and hip performance is altered in those with CAI. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether CAI is associated with deficits in ankle, knee, and hip torque. Fifteen subjects with unilateral CAI and fifteen subjects with healthy ankles participated. Subjects reported to the laboratory for one session during which the torque production of ankle plantar flexion/dorsiflexion, knee flexi…
