BACKGROUND: Child and adolescent anxiety disorders are the most prevalent form of childhood psychopathology. Research on child and adolescent anxiety disorders has predominantly been done in westernized societies. There is a paucity of data on the prevalence, comorbidity, and predictors of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents in non-western societies including those in sub-Saharan Africa. This paper investigates the prevalence, comorbidity, and predictors of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents in north-eastern Uganda.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of DSM-IV anxiety

BACKGROUND: The Resilience Hub was established to coordinate mental health and psychosocial support for anyone affected by the 2017 Manchester Arena terrorist attack.
AIMS: To use the Hub's mental health screening data to examine the variation in symptoms reported by children and young persons (CYP) and their parent/guardian and explore any association with time delay in post-event registration or parental distress.
METHOD: CYP engaging with Hub services were separated into eight 'admission' groups depending on when they registered post-incident. CYP were screened for trauma, depression, and

OBJECTIVE: This study (a) examined anxious youth with and without asthma on measures of negative self-talk, parental psychopathology, worry content, physical symptoms, panic symptoms, generalized symptoms, and separation anxiety symptoms, and (b) tested if outpatient CBT or medication were differentially effective in reducing anxiety for youth with asthma and anxiety.
METHODS: This secondary analysis separated youth with an anxiety disorder into asthma and non-asthma groups. Youth were also compared on response to treatments (i.e. CBT, sertraline, combined, and placebo).
RESULTS: A total of

The objective of this research was to conduct a systematic literature review on anxiety disorders in childhood as a psychopathology risk factor in adulthood. SciELO, LILACS, Adolec and PubMed databases were searched for papers published in the last 10 years on this subject. Ten papers fully complied with the inclusion criteria of acceptance. All these papers support the idea that anxiety disorders in children are predictors and can be considered as risk factors for psychopathologies in adulthood. Most studies focused on separation anxiety disorder linked to panic disorder and depression in adu

The Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale-Parent Version (RCADS-P) is a 47-item parent-report questionnaire of youth anxiety and depression, with scales corresponding to the DSM-IV categories of Separation Anxiety Disorder, Social Phobia, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The RCADS-P is currently the only parent-report questionnaire that concurrently assesses youth symptomatology of individual anxiety disorders as well as depression in accordance with DSM-IV nosology. The present study examined the psych

Anxiety disorders (separation anxiety disorder, selective mutism, specific phobias, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, and generalised anxiety disorder) are common and disabling conditions that mostly begin during childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood. They differ from developmentally normative or stress-induced transient anxiety by being marked (ie, out of proportion to the actual threat present) and persistent, and by impairing daily functioning. Most anxiety disorders affect almost twice as many women as men. They often co-occur with major depression, alcohol and ot

The Coping Questionnaire (CQ)-child and parent version-is an idiographic measure of youth's perceived ability to cope in anxiety provoking situations. Participants (N = 442; aged 7-17) met DSM-IV criteria for separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or social anxiety disorder. The internal consistency of the CQ was supported, and retest reliability and parent/child agreement were, as expected, modest. The CQ scores were significantly correlated in the expected direction with measures of anxiety symptoms and functioning, providing evidence of convergent and divergent validity.

It is now widely accepted that anxiety disorders run in families, and current etiological models have proposed both genetic and environmental pathways to anxiety development. In this paper, the familial role in the development, treatment, and prevention of anxiety disorders in children is reviewed. We focus on three anxiety disorders in youth, namely, generalized, separation, and social anxiety as they often co-occur both at the symptom and disorder level and respond to similar treatments. We begin by presenting an overview of a broad range of family factors associated with anxiety disorders.

Epidemiological studies are quite rare in the Arab world. The Institute for Development Research Advocacy and Applied Care (IDRAAC) has conducted a systematic review of all epidemiologic research on anxiety disorders in the Arab world up to 2006. Specific keywords were used in the search for affective disorders, namely anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, GAD, panic, separation anxiety disorder, SAD, overanxious disorder, OAD, phobia, fear, post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), obsessive compulsive symptom (OCS), obsession, compulsion, obsessive, compulsi

Recent advances in the developmental epidemiology, neurobiology, and treatment of pediatric anxiety disorders have increased our understanding of these conditions and herald improved outcomes for affected children and adolescents. This article reviews the current epidemiology, longitudinal trajectory, and neurobiology of anxiety disorders in youth. Additionally, we summarize the current evidence for both psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic treatments of fear-based anxiety disorders (e.g., generalized, social, and separation anxiety disorders) in children and adolescents. Current data sug

Clinical reports suggest that anxiety is a pertinent issue for adults with autism. We compared 34 adults with autism with 20 adults with intellectual disabilities, utilizing informant-based measures of anxiety and stress. Groups were matched by age, gender and intellectual ability. Adults with autism were almost three times more anxious than the comparison group and gained significantly higher scores on the anxiety subscales of panic and agoraphobia, separation anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. In terms of sources of stress, significant differences betwee

OBJECTIVE: We used a recursive partitioning method to examine antecedent childhood anxiety disorders in large samples of referred and nonreferred subjects with and without panic disorder.
METHODS: Referred subjects included adults treated for panic disorder (n = 131) and comparison adults with neither major anxiety nor mood disorders (n = 61). The nonreferred adult group derived from an opportunistic sample originally ascertained through family studies of probands with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), yielding 58 adults with panic disorder and 587 who were free of

Anxiety disorders are characterized by enhanced reactivity to threat, and event-related potentials (ERPs) are useful neural measures of the dynamics of threat processing. In particular, the late positive potential (LPP) is an ERP component that reflects sustained attention towards motivationally salient information. Previous studies in adults suggest that the LPP is enhanced to threatening stimuli in anxiety but blunted in depression; however, very little work has evaluated the LPP to threat in anxious youth. We measured the LPP during an emotional face-matching task in youth (age 7-19) with c

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety persist within and across diagnostic boundaries. The manner in which common v. disorder-specific genetic and environmental influences operate across development to maintain internalizing disorders and their co-morbidity is unclear. This paper investigates the stability and change of etiological influences on depression, panic, generalized, separation and social anxiety symptoms, and their co-occurrence, across adolescence and young adulthood.
METHOD: A total of 2619 twins/siblings prospectively reported symptoms of depression and anxiety at mean ages 15, 17

This study examines the psychometric properties of a newly developed pictorial anxiety assessment, the Picture Anxiety Test (PAT), designed for young children. A sample of 71 5-7-year-old children (clinically anxious and healthy controls) participated in an assessment comparing the PAT to other, established anxiety measures. Children's ratings were also compared to parent ratings of internalizing and externalizing problems. The PAT demonstrated favorable psychometric properties in this sample, including moderate to high internal consistency, high convergent validity with related constructs, an

The present study evaluated the utility of parent- and child-reported social fears for reaching a diagnosis of social phobia in youth. The diagnostic utility of (a) the number of fears and (b) specific feared social situations was examined. The sample included 140 youth and their parents: youth diagnosed with social phobia (n=50), youth diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder or separation anxiety disorder but not social phobia (n=49), and youth without an anxiety disorder (n=41). Youth and their parents were interviewed separately using the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for Childre

Few reports on panic disorder in children are available, despite the retrospectively documented onset in childhood of about 20% of the cases of adult panic disorder. The authors report on six prepubertal children, aged 8 to 13 years, who met DSM-III-R criteria for adult-type panic disorder. Hyperthyroidism, cardiologic, and respiratory problems were excluded as well as abuse of caffeine or other drugs. The first panic attack occurred between 5 to 11 years of age, with an average interval of 3 years between onset of the disorder and diagnosis. Mitral valve prolapse was documented in two cases.

In this article, I discuss the challenging experience of testing a child with severe separation anxiety and school refusal, which reached psychotic-level proportions. Unusual parameters are necessary to provide assessments with severely compromised children. In cases such as these, the goal should be to gather as much useful information as possible, paying particular attention to the conditions, which allow testing to take place. Such information will afford clues to the necessary conditions for providing required therapeutic and educational support.
