Cutaneous arteritis (CA) is a rare cutaneous manifestation of Crohn's disease. A 50-year-old woman with a 15-year history of CA was admitted to our hospital with a fever, abdominal pain, and hematochezia. Based on these symptoms and increased C-reactive protein levels, systemic vasculitis was considered. However, emergency colonoscopy revealed multiple longitudinal ulcers throughout the colon, thus suggesting Crohn's disease. Prednisolone (60 mg/day) was administered intravenously. A histopathological examination of the biopsied colonic mucosa revealed epithelioid granulomas, which confirmed t…

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a cerebrovascular disorder marked by the accumulation of amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) within the leptomeninges and smaller blood vessels of the brain. CAA can be both noninflammatory and inflammatory, and the inflammatory version includes Aβ-related angiitis (ABRA). ABRA is a vasculitis of the central nervous system related to an inflammatory response to Aβ in the vascular walls, which necessitates differentiating ABRA from noninflammatory CAA, as ABRA may require immunosuppressive treatment. MR imaging is typically the most effective imaging modality of choic

Since its first clinical description in 1890, extensive research has advanced our understanding of giant cell arteritis, leading to improvements in both diagnosis and management for affected patients. Imaging studies have shown that the disease frequently extends beyond the typical cranial arteries, also affecting large vessels such as the aorta and its proximal branches. Meanwhile, advances in comprehending the underlying pathophysiology of giant cell arteritis have given rise to numerous potential therapeutic agents, which aim to minimise the need for glucocorticoid treatment and prevent fla…

Takayasu arteritis (TA) is a rare large-vessel vasculitis that can result in significant morbidity and mortality. The coexistence of TA with leishmaniasis infection has not been reported previously. Case description: An 8-year-old girl presented with recurrent skin nodules that heal spontaneously for four years. Her skin biopsy revealed granulomatous inflammation with Leishmania amastigotes identified in the histocyte cytoplasm and the extracellular space. The diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis was made and intralesional sodium antimony gluconate was started. One month later, she experienced…

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the pregnancy outcomes of patients with Takayasu arteritis (TAK) and identify the relevant risk factors.
METHODS: A total of 110 pregnancies in 80 patients in a Chinese TAK cohort and 550 matched pregnancies in healthy women between 2000 and 2020 were included. The pregnancy outcomes between patients and controls were compared by Fisher's exact test. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes and maternal complications in patients with TAK.
RESULTS: In this case-control study, our results have demonstrated that adv…

The case of a 75-year-old woman diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), treated with low doses of prednisone, and with clinical and analytical remission is reported. Two years later, she presented with a clinical picture of giant cell arteritis (GCA), including headache, diplopia, jaw pain, feeling of swelling in both temples, and elevation of acute phase reactants. Symptoms spontaneously subsided 2 weeks later, while analytical parameters improved without any treatment. A high-resolution colour Doppler ultrasound showed thickening of the intima-media complex with 'halo' sign in the right…

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a systemic vasculitis that affects large vessels. Cardiovascular complications that develop with GCA have high morbidity and can be fatal. The aim of this work was to discuss epidemiology, clinical picture, etiopathology and risk of development of cardiovascular complications in GCA.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A literature review was performed for 2002 to 2021 using PubMed and Medline scientific search databases. The following keywords were used to search academic journal databases: "giant cell arteritis", "heart attack", "cardiovascular system", "aortic…

Syphilis is a rare cause of vision loss that mostly occurs after an infection of the meninges, brain tissue, and parenchyma. Syphilis can mimic auto-immune disease like giant cell arteritis which also manifest as sudden vision loss. Spirochete Treponema pallidum can spread through sexual contact and cause painless ulcers. Spirochetes can disseminate systemically and lead to secondary syphilis. Ocular syphilis can affect all parts of the eye in secondary and tertiary stages. It can present as scleritis, inflammation of the optic nerve, and uveitis. We present the case of a 59- year-old male suf…

We report a rare case of a 27-year-old woman with Takayasu arteritis (TAK) complicated by diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis. She first presented with sclerosing osteomyelitis of the right mandible without evidence of arteritis in the carotid arteries. Eight months later, she complained of left neck pain, and imaging studies revealed the presence of arteritis in the left carotid artery. She was diagnosed with TAK, and immunosuppressive treatment was initiated, which was effective for both the arteritis and the osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis is an important complication of TAK and bone scintigraphy…

We present an uncommon case of a 48-year-old female patient with symptomatic presentation of a severe aortic regurgitation with aneurysm of the ascending aorta and progressive dyspnea. Detailed investigation of laboratory tests and imaging identified Takayasu's arteritis (TA) as the underlying etiology. Computed tomography scan revealed complete occlusion of the right carotid artery as well as stenosis at the origins of left subclavian and vertebral arteries. In addition, cardiac magnetic resonance angiogram showed aneurysm at the proximal segment of right subclavian artery. Intervention with …

Childhood-onset Takayasu arteritis (c-TA) is a distinct subset affecting a wide age group, ranging from young infants to adolescents and it differs from adult TA in many aspects. There is scarcity of data on c-TA worldwide. The disease is classified using the European League Against Rheumatism/Pediatric Rheumatology International Trials Organization/Pediatric Rheumatology European Society criteria. The non-specific nature of presenting complaints and lack of appropriate biomarkers delay the early diagnosis of this illness and many children present with complications, which become irreversible …

Pericardial effusion in patients with giant cell arteritis has been described in case reports. The exact prevalence of this manifestation is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of pericardial effusion in patients with giant cell arteritis. Retrospective data were collected from 114 patients at a single hospital with giant cell arteritis diagnosed between October 1999 and July 2013. Pericardial effusion was found in four patients (3.5 %, 95 % confidence intervals 1-8.7). In three cases, pericardial effusion was present at initial presentation…

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is considered to be a T cell-dependent disease. Autoantibodies have not consistently been found in GCA. The exception is antiphospholipid antibodies (APLA), which were found in 30-80% of GCA cases. Recently, efforts have been made to seek autoantibodies in GCA using newer methods of detection: serological identification of antigens by recombinant cDNA expression cloning, and a proteomic approach. In these studies, lamin C (a nuclear envelope antigen) was recognized by antibodies in 32% of GCA sera and none of the controls. Other autoantigenic proteins were also ident…
