Sequencing Deficits and Phonological Speech Errors, But Not Articulation Errors, Predict Later Literacy Skills.

PURPOSE: Speech sound disorder (SSD) in conjunction with a language disorder has been associated with poor literacy acquisition; however, no study has evaluated whether articulation, phonological, or sequencing skills are differentially related to reading skills. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between speech error types at ages 5-6 years and literacy at ages 7-9 years. Phonological errors were hypothesized to predict phonological awareness (PA) and literacy even while accounting for other speech error types and language skills. METHOD: One hundred twenty-three children, 86 wi

Speech apraxia without oral apraxia: can normal brain function explain the physiopathology?

Apraxia of speech, usually associated with stroke, refers to the inability to perform speech motor movements typically with an intact ability to execute non-speech oral movements. It is uncertain whether apraxia of speech results from damage affecting the insula or the inferior frontal gyrus. The controversy started because of conflicting results from studies investigating patients with disrupted brain structure, when dysfunction of both sites can coexist. We conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of individuals without neurological disorders comparing speech and non-speech mo

Proximal-row carpectomy for diseases of the proximal row.

Twelve patients were studied following proximal-row carpectomy. Four had a follow-up of twenty years or more. The lesions for which the operation was done included Kienböck's disease, perilunar dislocations, and fractures of the carpal scaphoid. The major complaint of pain was relieved following surgery, and a functional range of motion was obtained. Mild degenerative arthritis of the wrist was not a contraindication and progressive degenerative arthritis of the radial capitate articulation did not occur. The operation did not result in weakness and all of the patients resumed their preoperati

Prevalence of stuttering and cluttering in adults with mental handicaps.

A survey (involving questionnaire, screening and assessment procedures) of 793 adults with mental handicaps revealed that 6.3% of the population had ideopathic dysfluencies. Issues in the differential diagnosis between stuttering, cluttering and other dysfluency are considered, and the contaminating factors involved in this diagnosis discussed.

Speech production after glossectomy: methodological aspects.

This article focuses on methodological issues related to quantitative assessments of speech quality after glossectomy. Acoustic and articulatory data were collected for 8 consonants from two patients. The acoustic analysis is based on spectral moments and the Klatt VOT. Lingual movements are recorded with ultrasound without calibration. The variations of acoustic and articulatory parameters across pre- and post-surgery conditions are analyzed in the light of perceptual evaluations of the stimuli. A parameter is considered to be relevant if its variation is congruent with perceptual ratings. Th

Density, frequency and the expressive phonology of children with phonological delay.

The effect of word-level variables on expressive phonology has not been widely studied, although the properties of words likely bear on the emergence of sound structure (Stoel-Gammon, 2011). Eight preschoolers, diagnosed with phonological delay, were assigned to treatment to experimentally induce gains in expressive phonology. Erred sounds were taught using stimulus words that varied orthogonally in neighborhood density and word frequency as the independent variables. Generalization was the dependent variable, defined as production accuracy of treated and untreated (erred) sounds. Blocked comp

[Lingual thyroid: a rare disease resembling base of tongue neoplasm].

The ectopic thyroid gland occurring in the midline of the base of tongue is a rare developmental anomaly. It may cause differential diagnostic problems with real malignant tumor. Symptoms, if where are any: foreign-body-feeling, swallowing difficulties, dyspnea, articulation disorders, bleeding and hypothyroidism, but in many cases the diagnosis is accidental. We describe two cases of lingual thyroid gland operated in our department, and discuss the present trends of the treatment of this disease. We agree with most of the authors that only cases presenting with symptoms should be operated, an…

Diagnosing inconsistent phonological disorder: quantitative and qualitative measures.

Studies of children's consistency of word production allow identification of speech sound disorder. Inconsistent errors are reported for two groups of children: childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) due to difficulty with the motoric precision and consistency of speech movements; and inconsistent phonological disorder (IPD) attributed to impaired phonological planning. This paper describes the inconsistent productions of children with IPD in comparison to typically developing children. In two studies of suspected SSD (N = 135), 22 children pronounced ≥40% of 25 words inconsistently on three repeat

Phonological and morphophonological effects on grammatical development in children with specific language impairment.

BACKGROUND: Five-year-olds with specific language impairment (SLI) often struggle with mastering grammatical morphemes. It has been proposed that verbal morphology is particularly problematic in this respect. Previous research has also shown that in young typically developing children grammatical markers appear later in more phonologically challenging contexts. AIMS: The main aim was to explore whether grammatical deficits in children with SLI are morphosyntactic in nature, or whether phonological factors also explain some of the variability in morpheme production. The analysis considered the

Speech sound disorder at 4 years: prevalence, comorbidities, and predictors in a community cohort of children.

AIM: The epidemiology of preschool speech sound disorder is poorly understood. Our aims were to determine: the prevalence of idiopathic speech sound disorder; the comorbidity of speech sound disorder with language and pre-literacy difficulties; and the factors contributing to speech outcome at 4 years. METHOD: One thousand four hundred and ninety-four participants from an Australian longitudinal cohort completed speech, language, and pre-literacy assessments at 4 years. Prevalence of speech sound disorder (SSD) was defined by standard score performance of ≤79 on a speech assessment. Logistic

Pleiotropic effects of a chromosome 3 locus on speech-sound disorder and reading.

Speech-sound disorder (SSD) is a complex behavioral disorder characterized by speech-sound production errors associated with deficits in articulation, phonological processes, and cognitive linguistic processes. SSD is prevalent in childhood and is comorbid with disorders of language, spelling, and reading disability, or dyslexia. Previous research suggests that developmental problems in domains associated with speech and language acquisition place a child at risk for dyslexia. Recent genetic studies have identified several candidate regions for dyslexia, including one on chromosome 3 segregati

Ultrasound analysis of tongue contour for the sound [j] in adults and children.

PURPOSE: Analyze and compare the mean tongue contours and articulatory gestures in the production of the sound [j] in adults and children with typical and atypical speech development. The children with atypical development presented speech sound disorders. METHODS: The diagnosis was determined by speech assessments. The study sample was composed of 90 individuals divided into three groups: 30 adults with typical speech development aged 19-44 years (AT), 30 children with typical speech development (CT), and 30 children with speech sound disorders, named as atypical in this study, aged four yea

A nonverbal phoneme deletion task administered in a dynamic assessment format.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the project was to design a nonverbal dynamic assessment of phoneme deletion that may prove useful with individuals who demonstrate complex communication needs (CCN) and are unable to communicate using natural speech or who present with moderate-severe speech impairments. METHOD: A nonverbal dynamic assessment of phoneme deletion with a systematic prompting and scoring system was developed and compared to the same measure administered using a traditional "static" format. Both versions were administered to 64 typically developing children ranging in age from 6 to 8;5. T

Clinical management of a child with Prader-Willi Syndrome from maternal uniparental disomy (UPD) genetic inheritance.

UNLABELLED: Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is reported in 1 in 10,000-15,000 individuals. Unfortunately, many cases are missed due to clinicians' lack of familiarity with the syndrome as well as clinical and laboratory diagnostic criteria. Although common clinical characteristics are reported, variety exists in the nature and severity of dysfunction associated with PWS. Case studies can provide information to understand relationships between phenotypic characteristics and genetic inheritance, which can in turn lead to effective clinical management. The purpose of this case study was to describe t

Developmental influences in teaching language forms to individuals with developmental disabilities.

The purpose of this experiment was to test the assumption that the sequencing of language goals for individuals with developmental disabilities should be based on the normal developmental sequence. In a series of two studies, phonetic sounds and syntactic structures representing different levels of normal development were taught to individuals with developmental disabilities. The results showed that (a) the majority of earlier emerging forms were acquired in fewer trials, (b) there was never an instance when the later emerging form was acquired and the earlier emerging form was not, and (c) th

Effectiveness of Intensive Linguistic Intervention in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case Study.

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is currently classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder with increasing prevalence year by year. One of the key characteristics of this population is the persistent and variable difficulty they present in the development of functional language. For this reason, most individuals with ASD are candidates for linguistic treatment, especially during the early stages of development. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an individualized and intensive oral language and communication intervention. Method: This research was conducted throu
