We performed ultrasonography on 32 athletes complaining of intense pain in a swollen and tender thigh or calf after a contusion or stretching trauma. The ultrasonogram was used to visualize the presence and size of a suspected hematoma. The findings included the following: 7 patients with a circumscribed, anechoic lesion compatible with a liquefied hematoma; 10 patients with a circumscribed lesion of mixed echogenicity compatible with areas of liquefied hematoma, coagulated blood, and edema; and 15 patients with a diffuse change in echogenicity of the whole muscle. The circumscribed liquefied,

We have performed a retrospective three-phase study to evaluate the effect of menstrual status upon musculoskeletal injuries in women athletes. Initially, we collected the menstrual and running histories of women participants in a regional 10-km footrace. In this study, 61% of the respondents to our questionnaire reported a continuous running program, and 39% reported an interruption of at least 3 months of their running program. The most common cause for interruption was injury. Those who had interrupted their running were more likely to have had irregular or absent menses and less likely to

(1) Background: Shoulder pathologies are mostly found in overhead sports. Many risk factors have been identified, in particular a deficit in the kinetic chain. The aim of this review was to find out whether prevention by strengthening the kinetic chain can have an impact on the rate of shoulder injury in overhead pitching athletes. (2) Methods: A systematic review of the literature was carried out, including studies on the role of the kinetic chain in the prevention of overhead athletes. The studies used were works published over the last 10 years searched on PubMed, Cochrane Library, PEDro an

The superficial medial collateral ligament (sMCL) is the most commonly injured ligamentous structure in the knee. The other medial knee stabilizers include the deep medial collateral ligament, the posterior oblique ligament, and the medial meniscus. Medial collateral ligament injuries frequently occur in young athletes. As a result of the good healing capacity of the sMCL, the majority of acute medial-sided knee injuries can be treated nonoperatively with good outcomes. However, missed concomitant injuries can lead to residual laxity and instability of the knee when treated conservatively. Whe

Taekwondo has been reported to be one of the most injurious sports in the summer Olympics, however, there is a dearth of data about injury profiles for junior athletes. Therefore, we aimed to identify the incidence and profiles of the injuries and illnesses that occurred during the 2018 World Taekwondo Junior Championships and recorded using an online system. Among the 889 athletes, 67 injuries and four illnesses were reported, corresponding to an overall clinical incidence of 7.5 injuries (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.7-9.3) and 0.5 illnesses (0.1-0.9) per 100 athletes. The most frequent i

BACKGROUND: Overuse injuries are common in sporting children and adolescents. These injuries are a particular concern when they involve the epiphyseal-physeal-metaphyseal (EPM) complex given their potential to disturb skeletal growth. Specifically, the limits of mechanical tolerance of the EPM complex to repetitive stress may be exceeded by the intense and continuous training characteristic of many youth sports today.
OBJECTIVE: This article describes the present status of knowledge on the occurrence and outcome of primary periphyseal stress injuries (PPSIs) affecting the EPM complex in the e

The treatment of athletes with carpal ligament injuries provides many challenges. Our initial goals remain to make a timely and accurate diagnosis, provide treatment options, and create an environment for shared decision making. To optimize outcomes and facilitate return to play, early surgical intervention may be warranted. This article reviews common carpal ligament injury patterns in the athlete with a focus on both classic and newer surgical techniques.

An adequate and balanced diet is of utmost importance in recovery and rehabilitation. "Rehabilitation nutrition" for injury recovery of athletes is similar to sports nutrition, except for the differences that concern the prevention of the risk or presence of sarcopenia, malnutrition, or dysphagia. Rehabilitation nutrition also aims, combined with training, to an adequate long-term nutritional status of the athlete and also in physical condition improvement, in terms of endurance and resistance. The aim of this paper is to define the proper nutrition for athletes in order to hasten their return

BACKGROUND: Foot and ankle injuries are increasing in competitive professional and collegiate athletics. Many of these injuries result in considerable missed time from sports and often require surgical intervention. To develop and implement effective practice participation strategies, return-to-play protocols, and injury prevention programs, an understanding of injury trends and epidemiology is vital.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of foot and ankle injuries in elite athletes participating in 37 sports at a single National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division
