The predominantly inattentive subtype of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The predominantly inattentive (IN) subtype of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a recently defined condition that is often overlooked by professionals and is still not completely understood. Characterized by symptoms of inattentiveness, such as distractibility, failure to complete work, forgetfulness, and disorganization, the IN subtype differs from the more commonly recognized combined (CB) subtype of ADHD in that symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity are absent or minimal. Large-scale epidemiologic studies suggest that the IN subtype is at least as prevalent as the CB su

Effect of nutritional supplements on attentional-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

This study reports the effects of two nutritional products upon the severity of symptoms in children with confirmed diagnoses of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): a glyconutritional product containing saccharides known to be important in healthy functioning and a phytonutritional product containing flash-dried fruits and vegetables. Seventeen ADHD children were recruited from a local parent support group. Parents of five of the subjects did not have their children on methylphenidate. Of the remaining twelve, all on methylphenidate, six were left on prescribed doses (random assig

Altered reinforcement mechanisms in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The present study tested eight boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 12 normal boys (comparison group), aged 7-12 years, to investigate the hypothesis that ADHD is associated with a steeper and shorter delay-of-reinforcement gradient than is normal. A two-component schedule of reinforcement was used to deliver trinkets or coins as reinforcers in a game-like test. One component was marked by a signal. During this period reinforcers (coins or trinkets) were delivered every 30 s. This component is called a 30-s fixed interval (FI) schedule of reinforcement and measures cha

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in the presence of Tourette syndrome.

Increasing attention to comorbidity in Tourette syndrome has led to a search for factors that would help in the development of treatment strategies for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Despite arguments and some research supporting various viewpoints, it is still unclear to what extent the frequency of co-occurrence is high in Tourette syndrome. It also is unclear whether attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder are part of a spectrum with related genetic or environmental factors. One of the main difficulties is obtaining a truly representative commun

Neuromotor functioning in children with Tourette syndrome with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Neuromotor function was assessed in 94 children of normal intelligence with Tourette syndrome, Tourette syndrome and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or ADHD only, using the Physical and Neurological Examination of Subtle Signs (PANESS). Time to complete six motor movements was analyzed separately by side (left and right) and complexity (simple and patterned). All groups performed faster on their preferred, dominant side. Although all groups took longer to complete patterned versus simple movements, the group with ADHD had a larger discrepancy for complexity than the other two

How specific is a deficit of executive functioning for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder?

A selective review of research in the executive functioning (EF) is given for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), higher functioning autism (HFA) and Tourette syndrome. The review is restricted due to changes in the classification of the disorder in recent years and secondly the heterogeneity of EF is restricted to five key areas of concern, inhibition, set shifting, working memory, planning, and fluency. The review makes clear that there are strong differences between child psychopathological groups and controls on these

The role of astrocytes in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: An update.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder, is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, manifesting in distinct symptoms and varying degrees of severity among patients. While the cellular processes underlying the neurobiology of ADHD are still being explored, in vitro studies suggest the involvement of certain cellular pathways in its clinical manifestations. Neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD are caused by malfunctions in numerous cells in the central nervous system (CNS) throughout development; nevertheless, mos

[Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: pharmacotherapy in special situations].

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder. In addition to the core symptoms, patients with ADHD often have manifestations of neurocognitive dysfunction (executive functioning deficiency, speech disorders, sluggish cognitive tempo), and about two thirds of children with established ADHD have another comorbid disorder. When prescribing pharmacotherapy, drugs with a positive effect on both the symptoms of ADHD and comorbid disorders are preferred. These include atomoxetine hydrochloride. The possibilities of using atomoxetine in the comorbidity of ADH

The Association Between Lipedema and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Introduction The current study aimed to investigate the overlap between symptoms of lipedema and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Lipedema is a condition that causes abnormal fat accumulation and inflammation in the legs and buttocks, often accompanied by edema and pain. ADHD is a common condition characterized by difficulty paying attention and controlling behavior, affecting the social, academic, and occupational quality of life. The study's primary objective was to assess the prevalence of ADHD symptoms in a population of women with lipedema symptoms and compare the clinical

Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a comprehensive review.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder, with only 2-3% prevalence into adulthood. The epidemiology and proposed causes of ADHD are multifactorial, including genetic, prenatal and environmental influences. The diagnosis of ADHD is often complicated by masking coping mechanisms, an overlap of symptoms with other, more commonly diagnosed disorders. Traditionally, it has been treated with stimulant medications. Non-stimulant options often target norepinephrine and dopamine regulation and are preferred in cases of comorbid substance use disorder, anxiety and

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adults: A case study.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often misdiagnosed or mistreated in adults because it is often thought of as a childhood problem. If a child is diagnosed and treated for the disorder, it often persists into adulthood. In adult ADHD, the symptoms may be comorbid or mimic other conditions making diagnosis and treatment difficult. Adults with ADHD require an in-depth assessment for proper diagnosis and treatment. The presentation and treatment of adults with ADHD can be complex and often requires interdisciplinary care. Mental health and non-mental health providers often overlo

Neuroimaging in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Recent Advances.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition that leads to impaired attention and impulsive behaviors diagnosed in, but not limited to, children. ADHD can cause symptoms throughout life. This article summarizes the structural (conventional, volumetric, and diffusion tensor imaging) and functional (task-based functional MRI [fMRI], resting-state fMRI, PET, and MR spectroscopy) brain findings in patients with ADHD. Consensus is lacking regarding altered anatomic or functional imaging findings of the brain in children with ADHD, likely because of the he

A Review of Heterogeneity in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 8%-12% of children worldwide. Throughout an individual's lifetime, ADHD can significantly increase risk for other psychiatric disorders, educational and occupational failure, accidents, criminality, social disability and addictions. No single risk factor is necessary or sufficient to cause ADHD. The multifactorial causation of ADHD is reflected in the heterogeneity of this disorder, as indicated by its diversity of psychiatric comorbidities, varied clinical profiles, patterns of neurocog
