Effects of low-dose radiation produced during radiofrequency ablation guided by 3D mapping on mitochondrial apoptosis in diabetic cardiomyocytes.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) mapping has been widely used in the clinical radiofrequency ablation of arrhythmia; however, the dose of intraoperative radiation exposure has not been determined. Moreover, whether a single instance of intraoperative radiation exposure has an effect on myocardial tissue or exacerbates diabetic heart injury remains uncertain. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we evaluated the dose of intraoperative radiation generated during radiofrequency ablation via 3D mapping. ELISA, Western blot, flow cytometry, and oxygen consumption rate detection were used to ident

Radiation Exposure During Fluoro-Assisted Direct Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Utilization of the direct anterior approach (DAA) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) has increased in the last decade with fluoroscopy often used to confirm implant position, leg length, and offset. Radiation exposure thresholds around 800 mGy are published for the risk of cataracts. We hypothesized that surgeon eye exposure during fluoro-assisted DAA total hip arthroplasty would be well below these published thresholds. METHODS: Three experienced orthopedic surgeons performed 30 consecutive fluoro-assisted DAA THAs. During each procedure, the surgeon wore a helmet-mounted dosimeter

Greater sensitivity to ionizing radiation at older age: follow-up of workers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory through 1990.

BACKGROUND: Workers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) were individually monitored for whole body exposure to ionizing radiation. Studies of these workers may provide valuable information about the long-term effects of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. Since biological changes occur as adults age, a potentially important question in these investigations is whether sensitivity to the carcinogenic effects of ionizing radiation changes with age at exposure. METHODS: Vital status and cause of death were ascertained through 1990 for 8307 white males hired at ORNL from 1943 through

LncRNA WWC2-AS1 functions AS a novel competing endogenous RNA in the regulation of FGF2 expression by sponging miR-16 in radiation-induced intestinal fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Recently, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were considered as important gene expression regulators involving various biological processes. In this study, we explored the role of lncRNAs in the pathogenesis of radiation-induced intestinal fibrosis (RIF). METHODS: LncRNAs were screened by microarray (Human LncRNA Array v3.0, Arraystar, Inc.) and the differentially expressed lncRNAs in RIF and non-RIF were analyzed by bioinformatics methods. The expression of WWC2-AS1/miR-16/FGF2 axis was compared on mRNA and protein level between human intestinal CCD-18Co fibroblasts cell lines and su

Myosteatosis predicts survival after surgery for periampullary cancer: a novel method using MRI.

BACKGROUND: Myosteatosis, characterized by inter- and intramyocellular fat deposition, is strongly related to poor overall survival after surgery for periampullary cancer. It is commonly assessed by calculating the muscle radiation attenuation on computed tomography (CT) scans. However, since magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is replacing CT in routine diagnostic work-up, developing methods based on MRI is important. We developed a new method using MRI-muscle signal intensity to assess myosteatosis and compared it with CT-muscle radiation attenuation. METHODS: Patients were selected from a pro

Angiosarcoma of the head and neck managed by a combination of multiple biopsies to determine tumor margin and radiation therapy. Report of three cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous angiosarcoma (AS) is a rare, often multicentric vascular tumor of the head and neck region with a rather poor prognosis. The original clinical size of the tumor rarely correlates to the degree of microscopic tissue invasion. Treatment by surgical excision sometimes requires very wide excision. Treatment by radiation or electron beam appears less mutilating but its efficacy is not well documented. OBJECTIVE: To present our experience with a combined surgical delineation of tumor margins followed by radiation treatment. METHODS: We treated three patients with extensive AS
