Finite Element Modeling of Viscoelastic Cochlear Components Under Acoustic and Blast Wave Transmission.

BACKGROUND: Veterans in the U.S. suffer from tinnitus and hearing loss resulting from acoustic and blast overpressure exposure. Given the di … . The model represents a cross-sectional slice of the cochlea located 16.75 mm from the base of its basilar membrane (BM). The viscoelastic material models were derived using experimental data of the outer hair cells (OHCs) and tectorial membrane from literature. BM displacements of 2 cases, namely a 90 dB acoustic wave at 800 Hz and a 30 kPa blast overpressure, w …

Traveling waves on the organ of corti of the chinchilla cochlea: spatial trajectories of inner hair cell depolarization inferred from responses of auditory-nerve fibers.

Spatial magnitude and phase profiles for inner hair cell (IHC) depolarization throughout the chinchilla cochlea were inferred from responses of auditory-nerve fibers (ANFs) to threshold- and moderate-level tones and tone complexes. Firing-rate profiles for frequencies ≤2 kHz are bimodal, with the major peak at the characteristic place and a secondary peak at 3-5 mm from the extreme base. Response-phase trajectories are synchronous with peak outward stapes displacement at the extreme cochlear base and accumulate 1.5 period lags at the characteristic places. High-frequency phase trajectories are

Age-related changes in the cochlea and cochlear nuclei of dogs.

To study the underlying morphological changes of presbycusis, cochlea and cochlear nuclei from twenty three dogs, ranging in age from 3 days to 17 years, were examined histologically. Dogs used in this study were house dogs kept in an environment similar to that of humans. Four types of histological changes reported in human presbycusis, that is, loss of spiral ganglion cells, atrophy of the organ of Corti, atrophy of the stria vascularis, and thickening of the basilar membrane were observed in dogs. The changes were prominent at the base of the cochlea. Less intense changes were also observed…

The effect of endocochlear potential suppression upon susceptibility to acoustic trauma.

In the present study we investigated the influence of decreased endocochlear potential (EP) on acoustic trauma. Guinea pigs with decreased E … se results indicate that the threshold shift of the CAP is mainly due to excessive vibration of the basilar membrane in the greater stimulus groups (125-130 dB SPL) but that the energy exhaustion of the hair cells to a certain extent participates in the threshold shift when the stimulus is milder (115-120 dB SPL). It is concluded that susceptibility to acoustic tr …

Neuroanatomical and histochemical evidence for the presence of common lateral line and inner ear efferents and of efferents to the basilar papilla in a frog, Xenopus laevis.

The claimed absence of efferents to the basilar papilla in frogs was reexamined in Xenopus laevis with the use of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) histochemistry. We also tested the presence of common lateral line and inner ear efferents by employing neuroanatomical tract tracing techniques. Our data show some AChE-positive fibers to the basilar papilla and all other sensory epithelia of the inner ear in larval and postmetamorphic frogs. Labeling of anterior lateral line and inner ear fibers with different fluorescing dextran amines resulted in a few double labeled efferent cells in the brainstem.

The derived-band envelope following response and its sensitivity to sensorineural hearing deficits.

The envelope following response (EFR) has been proposed as a non-invasive marker of synaptopathy in animal models. However, its amplitude is affected by the spread of basilar-membrane excitation and other coexisting sensorineural hearing deficits. This study aims to (i) improve frequency specificity of the EFR by introducing a derived-band EFR (DBEFR) technique and (ii) investigate the effect of lifetime noise exposure, age and outer-hair-cell (OHC) damage on DBEFR magnitudes. Additionally, we adopt a modelling approach to validate the frequency-specificity of the DBEFR and test how different

Obesity-Induced Structural and Neuronal Plasticity in the Lateral Orbitofrontal Cortex.

The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) integrates sensory information with the current value of foods and updates actions based on this information. Obese humans and rats fed a cafeteria diet have impaired devaluation of food rewards, implicating a potential obesity-induced dysfunction of the OFC. We hypothesized that obesity alters OFC pyramidal neuronal structure and function and reduces conditioned suppression of feeding. Rats were given restricted (1 h/day), extended (23 h/day) or no (chow only) access to a cafeteria diet and tested for a conditioned suppression of feeding. Golgi-cox impregnation

Olivocochlear efferents: Their action, effects, measurement and uses, and the impact of the new conception of cochlear mechanical responses.

The anatomy and physiology of olivocochlear (OC) efferents are reviewed. To help interpret these, recent advances in cochlear mechanics are also reviewed. Lateral OC (LOC) efferents innervate primary auditory-nerve (AN) fiber dendrites. The most important LOC function may be to reduce auditory neuropathy. Medial OC (MOC) efferents innervate the outer hair cells (OHCs) and act to turn down the gain of cochlear amplification. Cochlear amplification had been thought to act only through basilar membrane (BM) motion, but recent reports show that motion near the reticular lamina (RL) is amplified mo…

Threshold tuning curves of chinchilla auditory-nerve fibers. I. Dependence on characteristic frequency and relation to the magnitudes of cochlear vibrations.

Frequency-threshold tuning curves were recorded in thousands of auditory-nerve fibers (ANFs) in chinchilla. Synthetic tuning curves with 21 characteristic frequencies (187 Hz to 19.04 kHz, spaced every 1/3 octave) were constructed by averaging individual tuning curves within 2/3-octave frequency bands. Tuning curves undergo a gradual transition in symmetry at characteristic frequencies (CFs) of 1 kHz and an abrupt change in shape at CFs of 3-4 kHz. For CFs < or = 3 kHz, the lower limbs of tuning curves have similar slopes, about -18 dB/octave, but the upper limbs have slopes that become increa

Input-output functions for stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions in normal-hearing adult ears.

Input-output (I/O) functions for stimulus-frequency (SFOAE) and distortion-product (DPOAE) otoacoustic emissions were recorded in 30 normal-hearing adult ears using a nonlinear residual method. SFOAEs were recorded at half octaves from 500-8000 Hz in an L1=L2 paradigm with L2=0 to 85 dB SPL, and in a paradigm with L1 fixed and L2 varied. DPOAEs were elicited with primary levels of Kummer et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 103, 3431-3444 (1998)] at f2 frequencies of 2000 and 4000 Hz. Interpretable SFOAE responses were obtained from 1000-6000 Hz in the equal-level paradigm. SFOAE levels were larger tha

A simple and reliable technique to monitor intracranial pressure in the rat: technical note.

A technique for intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring in the rat that uses a permanent cisterna magna cannula is described. The cannula is placed into the subarachnoid space through the atlanto-occipital membrane with the operating microscope and is secured with cement. The distal end is connected to a pressure transducer and a polygraph recorder. To study the consistency of this technique, 12 anesthetized adult rats were subjected to baseline ICP measurements 2 days after placement of the cannula. Baseline pressures ranged between 1.0 and 10.0 cm H2O, with a mean of 5.6 cm H2O. Respiratory v

Hair cell loss and regeneration after severe acoustic overstimulation in the adult pigeon.

The extent of hair cell regeneration following acoustic overstimulation severe enough to destroy tall hair cells, was determined in adult pigeons. BrdU (5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine) was used as a proliferation marker. Recovery of hearing thresholds in each individual animal was measured over a period of up to 16 weeks after trauma. In ears with loss of both short and tall hair cells, little or no functional recovery occurred. In ears with less damage, where significant functional recovery did occur, there were always a few rows of surviving hair cells left at the neural edge of the basilar papilla

Correlations between cochlear hair cell loss and shifts of masked and absolute behavioral auditory thresholds in the house mouse.

Masked and absolute behavioral auditory thresholds were measured in kanamycin-treated C3H mice with a significant damage or loss of outer hair cells (OHCs) near the cochlear base, and in 17--24-month-old NMRI mice with a significant loss of OHCs and inner hair cells (IHCs) in the basal region and of OHCs near the apex. A loss of IHCs is correlated with an increase in absolute thresholds. A moderate damage or loss of OHCs in a cochlear region had no effect on absolute thresholds but correlated with a decrease and other changes of characteristics of masked thresholds in the respective frequency
