A Bayesian approach to investigating presumed retinal micro(nano)plastics.

The human retina, a highly vascularized, metabolically active, and immunologically privileged neural tissue, stands in contrast to the ubiquity of micro(nano)plastics (MNPs), which have been reported in every other organ system. Despite this, the presence of MNPs in the retina remains undocumented, a critical gap given their potential to contribute to local inflammation, microvascular occlusion, or act as cofactors in diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, or uveitis. Furthermore, the diverse physicochemical properties of MNPs - including their varying sizes,

Fast approximate Bayesian inference of HIV indicators using PCA adaptive Gauss-Hermite quadrature.

Naomi is a spatial evidence synthesis model used to produce district-level HIV epidemic indicators in sub-Saharan Africa. Multiple outcomes of policy interest, including HIV prevalence, HIV incidence, and antiretroviral therapy treatment coverage are jointly modelled using both household survey data and routinely reported health system data. The model is provided as a tool for countries to input their data to and generate estimates with during a yearly process supported by UNAIDS. Previously, inference has been conducted using empirical Bayes and a Gaussian approximation, implemented via the T

Calibration of agent based models for monophasic and biphasic tumour growth using approximate Bayesian computation.

Agent-based models (ABMs) are readily used to capture the stochasticity in tumour evolution; however, these models are often challenging to validate with experimental measurements due to model complexity. The Voronoi cell-based model (VCBM) is an off-lattice agent-based model that captures individual cell shapes using a Voronoi tessellation and mimics the evolution of cancer cell proliferation and movement. Evidence suggests tumours can exhibit biphasic growth in vivo. To account for this phenomena, we extend the VCBM to capture the existence of two distinct growth phases. Prior work primarily

Damage to tropical forests caused by cyclones is driven by wind speed but mediated by topographical exposure and tree characteristics.

Each year, an average of 45 tropical cyclones affect coastal areas and potentially impact forests. The proportion of the most intense cyclones has increased over the past four decades and is predicted to continue to do so. Yet, it remains uncertain how topographical exposure and tree characteristics can mediate the damage caused by increasing wind speed. Here, we compiled empirical data on the damage caused by 11 cyclones occurring over the past 40 years, from 74 forest plots representing tropical regions worldwide, encompassing field data for 22,176 trees and 815 species. We reconstructed the

A Bayesian network meta-analysis of 14 molecules inhibiting UV daylight-induced pigmentation.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperpigmentation disorders are very frequent, affect the quality of life and may become a psychological burden for afflicted patients. Many anti-pigmenting or depigmenting agents are available with various efficacy and almost no comparative data. 2-mercaptonicotinoyl glycine (2-MNG) was recently proposed as a viable candidate showing safe and effective results on hyperpigmentation control in vitro and in vivo. OBJECTIVES: A Bayesian network meta-analysis (BNMA) was conducted to map and rank the anti-pigmenting and depigmenting efficacy of 2-MNG 0.5% on UV daylight (UVDL)-induce

Risk of Venous Thromboembolism by Cancer Type: A Network Meta-Analysis.

Patients with cancer have an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Comparing tumor-specific VTE risk is complicated by factors such as surgery, disease stage, and chemotherapy. Network meta-analysis (NMA) using cancer types as network nodes enabled us to estimate VTE rates by leveraging comparisons across cancer types while adjusting for baseline VTE risk in individual studies. This study was conducted to estimate the risk of VTE by cancer type and factors influencing VTE risk. The Embase, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library repositories were systematically searched to identify clinical tr

Accurate Bayesian inference of sex chromosome karyotypes and sex-linked scaffolds from low-depth sequencing data.

The identification of sex-linked scaffolds and the genetic sex of individuals, i.e. their sex karyotype, is a fundamental step in population genomic studies. If sex-linked scaffolds are known, single individuals may be sexed based on read counts of next-generation sequencing data. If both sex-linked scaffolds as well as sex karyotypes are unknown, as is often the case for non-model organisms, they have to be jointly inferred. For both cases, current methods rely on arbitrary thresholds, which limits their power for low-depth data. In addition, most current methods are limited to euploid sex ka

The prevalence of neutropenia and association with infections in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: a Swedish single-center study conducted over 14 years.

Hematologic abnormalities are common manifestations of SLE, although neutropenia is observed less frequently and is not included in the classification criteria. Nonetheless, neutropenia is a risk factor for infections, especially those caused by bacteria or fungi. We aimed to evaluate the impact of neutropenia in SLE through a systematic investigation of all infections in a large cohort of well-characterized patients, focusing on neutropenia, lymphopenia, and hypocomplementemia. Longitudinal clinical and laboratory parameters obtained at visits to the Rheumatology Unit, Linköping University Ho

Enabling countries to manage outbreaks: statistical, operational, and contextual analysis of the early warning and response system (EWARS-csd) for dengue outbreaks.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is currently the fastest-spreading mosquito-borne viral illness in the world, with over half of the world's population living in areas at risk of dengue. As dengue continues to spread and become more of a health burden, it is essential to have tools that can predict when and where outbreaks might occur to better prepare vector control operations and communities' responses. One such predictive tool, the Early Warning and Response System for climate-sensitive diseases (EWARS-csd), primarily uses climatic data to alert health systems of outbreaks weeks before they occur. EWAR

Neural network procedures for the cholera disease system with public health mediations.

Severe gastrointestinal infections and watery diseases like cholera are still a major worldwide medical concern in the developing nations. A mathematical system contains some necessary dynamics based on the cholera spread to investigate the influence of public health education movements along with treatment and vaccination as control policies in restraining the infection. The cholera disease system with public health mediations divide the density of human population into seven categories based on the status of diseases, who are susceptible, educated, vaccinated, quarantined, infected, treated

Identifying Disease of Interest With Deep Learning Using Diagnosis Code.

BACKGROUND: Autoencoder (AE) is one of the deep learning techniques that uses an artificial neural network to reconstruct its input data in the output layer. We constructed a novel supervised AE model and tested its performance in the prediction of a co-existence of the disease of interest only using diagnostic codes. METHODS: Diagnostic codes of one million randomly sampled patients listed in the Korean National Health Information Database in 2019 were used to train, validate, and test the prediction model. The first used AE solely for a feature engineering tool for an input of a classifier.

Comparison of indirect treatment methods in migraine prevention to address differences in mode of administration.

Aim: Indirect treatment comparisons (ITCs) are anchored on a placebo comparator, and the placebo response may vary according to drug administration route. Migraine preventive treatment studies were used to evaluate ITCs and determine whether mode of administration influences placebo response and the overall study findings. Materials & methods: Change from baseline in monthly migraine days produced by monoclonal antibody treatments (subcutaneous, intravenous) was compared using fixed-effects Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA), network meta-regression (NMR), and unanchored simulated treatment

Quantifying climatic and socioeconomic drivers of urban malaria in Surat, India: a statistical spatiotemporal modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Cities are becoming increasingly important habitats for mosquito vectors of disease. The pronounced heterogeneity of urban landscapes challenges our understanding of the effects of climate and socioeconomic factors on mosquito-borne disease dynamics at different spatiotemporal scales. Here, we quantify the impact of climatic and socioeconomic factors on urban malaria risk, using an extensive dataset in both space and time for reported Plasmodium falciparum cases in the city of Surat, northwest India. METHODS: We analysed 10 years of monthly P falciparum cases resolved at three nes

Using Bayesian networks with Tabu-search algorithm to explore risk factors for hyperhomocysteinemia.

Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is a condition closely associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Detecting its risk factors and taking some relevant interventions still represent the top priority to lower its prevalence. Yet, in discussing risk factors, Logistic regression model is usually adopted but accompanied by some defects. In this study, a Tabu Search-based BNs was first constructed for HHcy and its risk factors, and the conditional probability between nodes was calculated using Maximum Likelihood Estimation. Besides, we tried to compare its performance with Hill Climbing

Attentional heterogeneity in social anxiety disorder: Evidence from Hidden Markov Models.

There is some evidence for heterogeneity in attentional processes among individuals with social anxiety. However, there is limited work considering how attentional processes may differ as a mechanism in a naturalistic task-based context (e.g., public speaking). In this secondary analysis we tested attentional heterogeneity among individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (N = 21) in the context of a virtual reality exposure treatment study. Participants completed a public speaking challenge in an immersive 360°-video virtual reality environment with eye tracking at pre-treatment, post-

Occurrence of five distinct clades of mermithid nematodes (Nematoda: Mermithidae) infecting black fly larvae (Diptera: Simuliidae) in tropical streams in Malaysia.

Mermithids are the most common parasites of black flies and are associated with host feminization and sterilization in infected hosts. However, information on the species / lineage of black fly mermithids in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia requires further elucidation. In this study, mermithids were obtained from black fly larvae collected from 138 freshwater stream sites across East and West Malaysia. A molecular approach based on nuclear-encoded 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) gene was used to identify the species identity / lineage of 77 nematodes successfully extracted and sequenced from t
