Lifestyle behaviors and sun exposure among individuals diagnosed with skin cancer: a cross-sectional analysis of 2018 BRFSS data.

PURPOSE: With the continued increase in skin cancer incidence rates, the population of skin cancer survivors continues to grow. Understanding skin cancer survivors' lifestyle behaviors, including ultraviolet radiation exposure, is important in reducing skin cancer recurrences and improving health outcomes. The objective of this study is to compare the differences in lifestyle behaviors among skin cancer survivors or individuals who currently have skin cancer versus individuals who have never had a skin cancer diagnosis. METHODS: To investigate these lifestyle behaviors, we performed a cross-s

The Importance of Minority Stress and Intersectionality for Cancer Symptom Management: The Case of Cancer-Related Pain.

Although research demonstrates that cancer survivors who are sexual and gender minorities (SGM), racial and ethnic minorities, or of lower socioeconomic status experience a higher prevalence of cancer-related pain, limited studies have examined how these intersecting marginalized identities and additional social experiences interconnect and affect pain outcomes. In their recent study, Boehmer and colleagues conducted an intersectional analysis of cancer-related pain among SGM adults and other marginalized backgrounds. Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, they found t…

Reducing substance use and risky sexual behaviour among drug users in Durban, South Africa: Assessing the impact of community-level risk-reduction interventions.

Alcohol and other drug (AOD) use is increasingly recognised as having a direct and indirect effect on the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, there is evidence to suggest that drug- and sex-related HIV risk-reduction interventions targeted at drug users within drug treatment centres or via community outreach efforts can lead to positive health outcomes. This study aimed to test whether a community-level intervention aimed at AOD users has an impact on risky AOD use and sexual risk behaviour. In 2007, in collaboration with a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) in

Potential drivers of HIV acquisition in African-American women related to mass incarceration: an agent-based modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Incarceration can increase HIV risk behaviors for individuals involved with the criminal justice system and may be a driver of HIV acquisition within the community. METHODS: We used an agent-based model to simulate HIV transmission in a sexual-contact network representing heterosexual African American men and women in Philadelphia to identify factors influencing the impact of male mass incarceration on HIV acquisition in women. The model was calibrated using surveillance data and assumed incarceration increased the

Epidemiology and Control of Foodborne Diseases in Resource-Limited Settings: Insights from Afghanistan.

Food safety is a major global public health concern, with unsafe foods contaminated by biological, chemical, and physical hazards causing foodborne diseases (FBDs), resulting in a high global burden of illness and death. This narrative review provides an overview of current evidence on the epidemiology, risk factors, and control strategies of FBDs, with particular attention to challenges in resource-limited settings. These diseases are disproportionately severe in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to interconnected factors such as poor sanitation, limited access to clean water, inad

Measurement challenges in binge drinking research: Addressing sex and gender diversity in national surveys.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of binge drinking is essential for understanding population-level health disparities. However, national surveys commonly rely on binary sex-based thresholds, which may introduce classification challenges when applied across diverse sex and gender classifications. METHODS: Data from the 2019-2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were used to examine binge drinking patterns among adults reporting transgender identity. Binge drinking was defined using standard sex-based thresholds (≥5 drinks for men, ≥4 drinks for women on a single occasion). Multivaria…

Parental status and gender are associated with differences in Tdap vaccination rates among United States adults.

Professional societies recommend all caregivers of neonates be vaccinated to Tdap to prevent neonatal pertussis. Limited data exist as to whether parents, including female parents (i.e. mothers) and male parents (i.e. fathers), are compliant with Tdap recommendations. We utilized individual-level self-reported Tdap vaccination information from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BFRSS) to assess the extent to which parental status was associated with Tdap vaccination status. Among reproductive age individuals (19-49 years old) with known parental status, only 28 % had Tdap vac…
