Depressive symptoms are associated with excess weight and unhealthier lifestyle behaviors in urban adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for the development of depressive symptoms and obesity. This study examined the association of depressive symptoms with standardized BMI (BMI z-score), lifestyle behaviors, and self-efficacy measures in a sample of urban adolescents. METHODS: A school-based study was conducted among adolescents (N=1508) enrolled from 11 public schools. Depressive symptoms were assessed with Kandel's depressive symptoms scale for adolescents. Fruit and vegetable intake and intake of energy-dense foods were assessed by a short food frequency questionnaire. Sedentary

Pharmacological disruption of mouse social approach behavior: relevance to negative symptoms of schizophrenia.

Social withdrawal is one of several negative symptoms of schizophrenia, all of which are poorly treated by current therapies. One challenge in developing agents with efficacy against negative symptoms is the lack of suitable preclinical models. The social approach test was used as the basis for developing an assay to test emerging therapies for negative symptoms. NMDA antagonists and dopamine agonists have been used extensively to produce or disrupt behaviors thought to be rodent correlates of positive and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia. The aim of these studies was to determine whether s

Self-reported sexually transmitted disease symptoms and treatment-seeking behaviors in China.

In recent decades, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have reemerged and spread as a major public health problem in China. However, little effort has been made on promoting appropriate health-seeking behaviors among people living with STDs. A randomly selected sample of market vendors in Fuzhou (N = 4510) was recruited and assessed from 2003 to 2004 to examine their choice of pharmacy versus hospital, and folk remedy versus Western medicine when having STD symptoms. Approximately 11.3% of the sample (4.0% of men and 17.8% of women) reported having had abnormal genital discharge or genital ul

[Hyperventilation. The cognitive-behavior-therapy and the technique of the exercises in the induction of panic disorder symptoms].

Panic disorder (PD) is characterized by frequent and recurrent acute panic attacks. The current cognitive conception for PD enhances the fear of corporal sensations, when the individual define his physical sensations as being related to a serious disease or imminent death, not interpreting them as natural physiologic mechanisms. We reported three severe cases of PD of the respiratory subtype, with agoraphobia, whose symptoms of hyperventilation predominated on clinical picture. The treatment consisted on tricycles antidepressant and cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) sessions. The objective of r

Adolescents' emotion regulation in daily life: links to depressive symptoms and problem behavior.

This study examined links between emotion regulation and adjustment in a sample of 152 adolescents in Grades 7 (M age = 12) and 10 (M age = 15). Emotion regulation was assessed using the experience sampling method, in which adolescents provided multiple reports about the intensity, lability, and strategies used to regulate negative emotions across 1 week. Adolescents also completed self-report measures of adjustment. Adolescents who reported more intense and labile emotions and less effective regulation of these emotions also reported more depressive symptoms and problem behavior. Responding t

Discriminative validity of parent report of hypomanic and depressive symptoms on the General Behavior Inventory.

It often is difficult clinically to differentiate bipolar disorder from other mental health conditions in young people. This study evaluated a parent report measure of depressive and hypomanic/biphasic symptoms. Parents of 196 youths, who were 5 to 17 years old and presented at an outpatient research center, completed an adapted General Behavior Inventory (GBI). Factor analyses suggested two dimensions, depression (alpha = .97) and biphasic/hypomania (alpha = .95). Logistic regressions using these scales discriminated mood disorder versus disruptive behavior disorder or no diagnosis, unipolar

Abnormal illness behavior of patients with functional somatic symptoms: relation to psychiatric disorders.

Functional somatic symptoms are highly associated with hypochondriasis, anxiety, and depressive disorders. Despite the absence of an organic disorder, underlying psychological distress of patients with functional somatic symptoms may result in abnormal illness behavior such as inadequate treatment seeking or overuse of medical services. Using the Illness Behavior Questionnaire (IBQ), we examined the illness behavior of Japanese patients visiting a general medicine clinic whose physical symptoms were considered functional. We used the General Health Questionnaire-30 to classify patients with fu

Maternal Childhood Maltreatment History and Child Behavior Problems: Developmental Patterns and Mediation via Maternal Depressive Symptoms and Parenting Behavior.

Maternal exposure to childhood maltreatment (CM) is associated with offspring behavioral problems; however, little work has examined these associations longitudinally across child development. This study examined the effects of maternal history of CM on trajectories of child internalizing and externalizing behavior measured from toddlerhood to preschool, and the role of maternal depressive symptoms and parenting behavior as potential mediators. Participants included 115 mother-child dyads recruited from a hospital maternity ward. Maternal CM was measured at 3-months postpartum. At 18, 36, and

Veterans with co-occurring PTSD and BPD symptoms benefit from dialectical behavior therapy: effects of PTSD on BPD symptom trajectories.

Among those with borderline personality disorder (BPD), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is considered a frontline treatment for reducing impulsivity and suicidality and improving emotion regulation. DBT has been proven effective when delivered within Veterans Health Administration. Much of the research supporting the use of DBT was conducted on patients with relatively clean diagnostic profiles (e.g. excluding bipolar disorder). However, Veterans are diagnostically complex and are especially likely to have comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We sought to understand how a PTSD dia

Depressive symptoms carry an increased risk for suicidal ideation and behavior in bipolar disorder without any additional contribution of mixed symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the risk of suicidal ideation or behavior during mixed states exceeds that attributable to the depressive components of these states alone in bipolar disorder. METHODS: We utilized real-world, longitudinal clinical data collected on 290 patients with bipolar disorders (bipolar I, bipolar II, and bipolar not otherwise specified (NOS)) from the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC) Clinical Care Registry (CCR) seen for 891 visits over a mean of 27.5 weeks. Depressive symptoms were measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), manic symptoms w

Usability study to guide the development of a cognitive behavioral therapy mobile application for reducing irritable bowel syndrome symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent disorder of gut-brain interaction in which psychosocial factors can exacerbate symptoms. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has proven effective in alleviating IBS symptoms, its widespread implementation is limited by therapist shortages and the substantial time demands placed on both patients and clinicians. Mobile health–delivered Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs) may overcome these barriers by providing continuous, personalized support. In this study, we simulated the core functions of a JITAI-based CBT applicatio

Behavioral and Psychological Correlates of Depressive Symptoms in Korean Women: Attenuation of the Perceived Body Size Association After Adjustment.

Aim: This study addressed two research questions. First, which sociodemographic, behavioral, and psychological factors are independently associated with elevated depressive symptoms among Korean women aged 20-59 years? Second, does subjective perception of one's own body size retain an independent association with depressive symptoms after these factors are taken into account, and does this pattern differ between younger and midlife women? The primary outcome was elevated depressive symptoms, defined as a PHQ-9 score of 5 or above. Design: This cross-sectional study used pooled data from the f

Cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-based, and mindfulness-based interventions for psychological and sleep-related symptoms during menopause: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Menopause is frequently accompanied by psychological and sleep-related symptoms, including depression, anxiety, and insomnia, which significantly impair quality of life. Although pharmacological treatments are commonly prescribed, psychological interventions have gained increasing attention as non-pharmacological alternatives. OBJECTIVE: To systematically synthesize the evidence on the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance- and mindfulness-based interventions (ACT, MBSR) on depression, anxiety, and sleep-related outcomes during the menopausal transition.
