New future dental material: Antimicrobial material "cetylpyridinium chloride-montmorillonite" and implantable material "phosphorylated pullulan".

In dental practice, there are two major diseases: dental caries and periodontal disease. Although dental treatment techniques have advanced along with advances in dental materials, some diseases such as root surface caries and horizontal bone resorption have not yet achieved satisfactory treatment results. Since these diseases are infections caused by oral bacteria, we believe that materials with long-lasting antimicrobial properties would help control these diseases. In addition, materials that can adhere to wet hard tissues would contribute to treatment. In this review, new materials develop

Soy Protein Adhesive Enhanced Through Supramolecular Interaction with Tannic Acid Modified Montmorillonite.

The use of soybean meal (SM) as an alternative to petroleum-based resins in wood-based panels offers a solution to the problem of formaldehyde release. However, inherent drawbacks of soybean meal adhesives, such as poor toughness, low bond strength, and susceptibility to mold, have hindered their further development. In this study, a novel biomass adhesive, SM-MMT@TA, was developed based on supramolecular interactions between tannic acid (TA), montmorillonite (MMT), and soybean meal. Tannic acid was securely attached to the MMT surface through coordination bonds with Ca2+, Mg2+, and Al3+ ions,

Humic acid enhances the co-transport of colloids and phosphorus in saturated porous media.

Phosphorus (P) has been widely recognized as a substance that is difficult to transport due to its tendency to become easily fixed in the soil. However, many reports demonstrate that groundwater P pollution is rising in humus-rich areas. Research is urgently needed to confirm (or reject) the hypothesis that increased P pollution is related to humus, as there is currently limited quantitative research on this topic. In this study, we conducted a series of batch equilibrium adsorption-desorption experiments and column experiments to quantify the effects of montmorillonite colloids (MCs) and humi

Transport of oxytetracycline through saturated porous media: role of surface chemical heterogeneity.

The current state of knowledge on the transport behaviors of oxytetracycline (OTC, a typical tetracycline antibiotic) in porous media with heterogeneous chemical surfaces is inadequate. In this work, the mobility properties of OTC through saturated porous media with different chemical heterogeneities (i.e., quartz sand, montmorillonite (MMT)-, humic acid (HA)-, and goethite (Goe)-coated sands) were investigated. In comparison with the mobility of OTC in the quartz sand, HA and goethite coatings inhibited the mobility of OTC, whereas montmorillonite coating enhanced OTC mobility. HA coating inh

The efficiency of combined coagulant and ballast to remove harmful cyanobacterial blooms in a tropical shallow system.

We tested the hypothesis that a combination of coagulant and ballast could be efficient for removal of positively buoyant harmful cyanobacteria in shallow tropical waterbodies, and will not promote the release of cyanotoxins. This laboratory study examined the efficacy of coagulants [polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and chitosan (made of shrimp shells)] alone, and combined with ballast (lanthanum modified bentonite, red soil or gravel) to remove the natural populations of cyanobacteria collected from a shallow eutrophic urban reservoir with alternating blooms of Cylindrospermopsis and Microcystis.…

Antioxidant Films of Starch Blends With Onion Peel Extract for Packaging Coriander.

Utilization of by-products from food and vegetable processing has gained immense importance in recent times since the addition of their extracts into biopolymers yields active films. The added advantages include abundance, cost-effectiveness, functionality, and their environmentally friendly nature. In the present work, active food packaging materials were developed by incorporating onion peel extract (OPE) in starch-polyvinyl alcohol-montmorillonite (starch-PVA-MMT) biopolymer films. The physicochemical, mechanical, thermal, surface, and antioxidant properties of the films were analyzed. The

Clay minerals-mediated removal of Norfloxacin and Norfloxin-resistant bacteria from water environments and associated mechanisms.

Norfloxacin (NOR) is frequently detected in various water bodies and has the potential to promote the proliferation of NOR-resistant bacteria/genes in the environment. Efficiently removing residual NOR and NOR-resistant bacteria from contaminated water is critical to mitigating their environmental risks. This study investigated the ability of two common clay minerals, kaolinite and montmorillonite, to remove NOR and NOR-resistant bacteria from five different water environments (ultrapure water, simulated and real freshwater, and simulated and real seawater) and explored the underlying removal

Insights into phenanthrene attenuation by hydroxyl radicals from reduced iron-bearing mineral oxygenation.

The oxygenation of Fe(II)-bearing minerals for hydroxyl radicals (HO•) formation and contaminant attenuation receive increasing attention, while the mechanisms for specific Fe(II) species in manipulating HO• formation and contaminant attenuation are unclear. Herein, a total of four Fe(III)-bearing minerals were applied in the reduction-oxygenation processes to produce HO•. Results showed that the total HO• generated from the Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides were significantly higher than those from the Fe-silicates, with the order of goethite and hematite (~1500 μmol kg-1) > Fe-montmorillonite (~550 μmol kg

Oxytetracycline induced the redox of iron and promoted the oxidation of As(III).

Antibiotics and arsenic are two frequently detected contaminants in soils and waters, both of which have potential threats to human health. There are few studies focusing on the interaction between these two groups of contaminants in the environment. In this study, we found that the presence of oxytetracycline could significantly promote the oxidation of inorganic As(III) to As(V) with trace Fe(III) (10 μM) and H2O2 (100 μM) at near natural pH, and OTC was degraded simultaneously. The most possible mechanism was that OTC could complex with Fe(III) and reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II), which further in

Impacts of Organomodified Nanoclays and Their Incinerated Byproducts on Bronchial Cell Monolayer Integrity.

Incorporation of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) into nanocomposites using advanced manufacturing strategies is set to revolutionize diverse technologies. Of these, organomodified nanoclays (ONCs; i.e., smectite clays with different organic coatings) act as nanofillers in applications ranging from automotive to aerospace and biomedical systems. Recent toxicological evaluations increased awareness that exposure to ONC can occur along their entire life cycle, namely, during synthesis, handling, use, manipulation, and disposal. Compared to other ENMs, however, little information exists describing

Preparing natural biocomposites of N-quaternary chitosan with antibacterial activity to reduce consumption of antibacterial drugs.

In this work, in order to prepare biocomposites of ciprofloxacin- montmorillonite/N,N,N-triethyl chitosan (CMC/TEC and CMC׳/TEC), ciprofloxacin was intercalated into the Na+-montmorillonite layers in two different pHs and coated with N,N,N-triethyl chitosan. XRD and FT-IR data demonstrated that ciprofloxacin (CIP) diffused among the layers of montmorillonite. The prepared biocomposites were further characterised by TG, SEM, BET, DSC, and disk diffusion method to investigate antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus as well. Coated composites with N,N,N-triethyl chitosan possessed ef

Soil mineral alters the effect of Cd on the alkaline phosphatase activity.

The toxicity of heavy metals (HMs) to soil enzymes is directly influenced by the status of the enzyme (free vs. immobilized on minerals) and the duration of exposure. However, little information is available on the interaction effect of HMs, mineral, and exposure time on soil enzyme activities. We investigated the interaction mechanism of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) with minerals (montmorillonite and goethite) and the response of free and immobilized ALP to cadmium (Cd) toxicity under different exposure times. The adsorption isotherms of ALP on both minerals were L-type. The maximum adsorption

Increased Solubility and Bioavailability of Hydroxy-Cr(III) Precipitates in the Presence of Hydroxamate Siderophores.

Siderophores are a diverse group of low molecular weight biogenic metallophores with a particular affinity for Fe(III) but they also have potential to complex a number of other polyvalent metal cations, including Cr(III). Here we show that two hydroxamate siderophores, desferrioxamine B and rhodotorulic acid, at environmentally relevant concentrations, facilitate the dissolution of hydroxy-Cr(III) precipitates from a common layer silicate. Desferrioxamine B and rhodotorulic acid induced maximum initial Cr dissolution rates of 11.3 ± 1.7 × 10- 4  and 9.03 ± 0.68 × 10- 4 µmol m- 2 h- 1, respecti
