Limited longitudinal studies have hindered the understanding of family adaptation after loss of a loved one in an intensive care unit (ICU). Based on the Double ABCX Model, this study examined changes in adaptation to bereavement for family members in the first year after the ICU death, with special attention to the effects of race/ethnicity. A repeated-measures design was used to conduct the investigation using 3 time points (1-3, 6, and 12 months) after the ICU death. Data were analyzed using linear mixed modeling. Family members (n = 30) consisted of 60% non-Hispanic Whites and 40% African …

BACKGROUND: Previous findings on the association between stress during pregnancy and pregnancy loss are inconsistent. We aimed to estimate t … icant associations (aHR=1.83, 95% CI 1.49 to 2.25). All the analyses indicated a stronger effect of bereavement when the mother lost a child or when the death was unexpected.
CONCLUSIONS: Our main results suggested no strong association between severe stress during pregnancy and risk of pregnancy loss. Results from the pregnancy-matched analyses considered i …

CONTEXT: Donated tissues can save lives of critically burned patients and those needing a heart valve replacement. Tissues enhance the lives … that tissue donors' family members can find in tissue donation. Findings also demonstrate that the bereavement process corroborates contemporary bereavement and attachment theories. Health professionals are encouraged to seek donations with less worry that tissue donors' family members will experience adverse outcomes during bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal stress may increase the susceptibility to childhood cancer by affecting immune responses and hormonal balance. We examined whether antenatal stress following maternal bereavement increased the risk of childhood cancer.
METHODS: All children born in Denmark from 1968 to 2007 (N=2 743 560) and in Sweden from 1973 to 2006 (N=3 400 212) were included in this study. We compared cancer risks in children born to women who lost a first-degree relative (a child, spouse, a parent, or a sibling) the year before pregnancy or during pregnancy with cancer risks in children of women who…

Homicidal bereavement combines the loss of a close person with exposure to intentional interpersonal violence, yet its posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) burden has not been quantitatively synthesized. This systematic review identified 35 reports, of which nine independent, non-treatment-selected samples (N = 1,389) contributed to a Bayesian random-effects meta-analysis. Categorical and continuous PTSD outcomes were harmonized using a latent-threshold framework. The pooled latent-z estimate was -0.50 (95% credible interval [-1.08, 0.09]), corresponding to a threshold-equivalent PTSD prevalen…

BACKGROUND: Perinatal death has profound psychological and physical consequences. Understanding how bereaved parents regulate negative affect may help explain variability in adjustment and inform interventions. However, two important gaps remain. First, existing reviews in the field include very limited evidence on parents following perinatal death. Second, these reviews have focused primarily on emotion regulation processes, although emotion regulation is only one way to regulate affective experiences.
AIMS: This review synthesises quantitative evidence on affect regulation (AR) following pe

In the UK, a parent dies every 22 minutes, significantly affecting children's mental health, education, and social well-being. Yet little is known about children's lived experiences of bereavement and support. Developed with public involvement, this qualitative study employed constructivist grounded theory. In-depth virtual interviews were conducted with eleven parentally bereaved children aged ten to eighteen. Iterative data analysis used the constant comparative method. Analysis constructed five themes: (1) What helps, (2) Talking on your terms, (3) A tornado of emotions, (4) Difficulties ac…

Grieving children may wonder about questions of illness, dying, and death as they navigate the death of, or grief for, someone who matters to them. Parents and caregivers, as well as health and psychosocial clinicians frequently report feeling uncertain and unprepared to engage in these conversations even if they are aware of their helpfulness. Interested in examining the questions bereaved children wonder about, this study analyzed 710 anonymous questions submitted by children aged 5-17 during Ask Us Anything sessions at a bereavement camp in Ontario, Canada between 2009 and 2024. Through an …

BACKGROUND: Grief affects most people at some point, and is commonly associated with psychological distress, reduced well-being, and difficu … lling, practical help, economic assistance and wider knowledge about grief in society.
CONCLUSION: Bereavement support in Sweden is provided by a wide range of societal factors, but the findings suggest important gaps in its structure, continuity, and visibility. Further research is needed to determine which bereaved individuals need which types of support, …

This phenomenological study examines 20 bereaved couples from the "Iron Swords" War in Israel (who received letters from fallen sons instructing them to "celebrate life" instead of mourning. Through in-depth dyadic interviews, the "Emotional Mandate" was analyzed-a process where the deceased's request becomes a rigid moral obligation divesting parents of emotional autonomy and creating "conditional mourning". Findings reveal a "forced joy paradox" generating somatic dissonance between required external actions and internal silenced pain. The "dyadic effect" highlights a gender gap: fathers int

OBJECTIVES: Frequent haemodialysis creates close-knit communities within treatment units, where high patient mortality contributes to significant grief among patients and staff. Despite the emotional toll, support for grief and bereavement in these settings remains limited, and recent data are lacking. This scoping review aims to explore how patients and nursing staff within haemodialysis units experience and cope with bereavement, and to identify support strategies currently used or desired to inform future, culturally sensitive approaches, particularly in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Home death may not be equally accessible for all children with incurable cancer. Furthermore, inadequate symptom management in the home setting represents a major concern. The aims of this study were to examine: (i) the associations between parents' sociodemographic characteristics, prognostic understanding and care goals, and their child's place of death; and (ii) the associations between the child's place of death, and the parents' experiences of their child's symptom burden, end-of-life, and death.
METHODS: Nationwide retrospective cross-sectional survey among bereaved parents

Collective bereavement amid collective trauma can activate prior individual grief reactions, even without current losses from the traumatic event. Those experiencing loss tied to severe traumatic events may face higher susceptibility to developing pathological grief.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 disrupted access to bereavement support. The objective of this study was to identify the bereavement supports used by Australians during the COVID-19 pandemic, perceived helpfulness of supports used, prevalence and areas of unmet support need, and characteristics of those with unmet support needs.
METHODS: A convenience sample of bereaved adults completed an online questionnaire (April 2021-April 2022) about their bereavement experiences including support use and perceived helpfulness, unmet support needs and mental health. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to de…

INTRODUCTION: Most caregivers of people living with dementia will experience bereavement within 10 years, but study of and support for their needs rarely persists following the death of their care recipients. A single model that leverages theoretical insights as well as observation from lived experience might help identify who will have greater difficulty following dementia-related bereavement and suggest core mechanisms to target to relieve clinical and subclinical consequences. The millions of existing bereaved dementia caregivers likely have considerable insight into ways to improve experie…
