Digoxin in heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias.

Digoxin therapy has no effect on mortality in heart failure. Digoxin may be useful for maintaining clinical stability and exercise capacity in patients with symptomatic heart failure. Digoxin appears to be of most benefit in patients with severe heart failure, cardiomegaly and a third heart sound. Digoxin should be used as a second-line drug after diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and beta-blockers in patients with congestive heart failure who are in sinus rhythm. Digoxin should be used as a first-line drug in patients with congestive heart failure who are in atrial fibrillat

Atrial L-type Ca2+-channel, beta-adrenorecptor, and 5-hydroxytryptamine type 4 receptor mRNAs in human atrial fibrillation.

Molecular and electrical remodeling of ion channels determining action potential duration has been proposed as a major mechanism in chronic atrial fibrillation. We investigated the mRNA expression of the cardiac L-type Ca2+-channel subunits alpha1c, alpha2/delta1, beta1a, and beta1b/c in atrial tissue of patients with chronic atrial fibrillation compared to patients in sinus rhythm. In addition, the mRNA expression of the 5-hydroxytryptamine type 4-, beta1-, and beta2-adrenergic receptors, which are known to stimulate the L-type Ca2+-current in human atrium, was analyzed and the effect of chro

Antiarrhythmic Medications for Acute Management of Ventricular Arrhythmias.

Antiarrhythmic medications play a crucial role in the acute management of ventricular arrhythmias. Determining the most appropriate, effective, and safe antiarrhythmic medication to use in each clinical scenario requires careful consideration of the underlying disease, rhythm, and clinical presentation. Important initial distinctions to be made in the acute management of ventricular tachycardia (VT) are whether structural heart disease is present and if the patient has decompensated heart failure and borderline cardiac output, which makes the use of first-line agent beta blockers hazardous. Terbutaline toxicosis in a dog.

A 2-year-old Collie-type dog with lethargy, tachycardia, tachypnea, and muscle tremors was examined 10 hours after the dog had bitten into an inhalation canister containing the beta 2-adrenergic agonist, terbutaline sulfate. Electrocardiographic findings (ventricular premature contractions and paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia) were consistent with excessive adrenergic activity resulting from terbutaline toxicosis. Serum terbutaline concentration was similar to that reported in human beings with terbutaline toxicosis. The dog did not respond to initial treatment with fluids and lidocaine admi

In silico Effects of Synaptic Connections in the Visual Thalamocortical Pathway.

We have studied brain connectivity using a biologically inspired in silico model of the visual pathway consisting of the lateral geniculate … rom the LGN and the layer 4. This agrees with existing physiological studies where it is shown that beta rhythm is generated in the infragranular layers. Lastly, we present a case study to demonstrate a neurological condition in the model. By changing connectivities in the network, we could simulate the condition of significant (P < 0.001) decrease in beta ba …

Beta-band oscillations during passive listening to metronome sounds reflect improved timing representation after short-term musical training in healthy older adults.

Sub-second time intervals in musical rhythms provide predictive cues about future events to performers and listeners through an internalized representation of timing. While the acuity of automatic, sub-second timing as well as cognitively controlled, supra-second timing declines with ageing, musical experts are less affected. This study investigated the influence of piano training on temporal processing abilities in older adults using behavioural and neuronal correlates. We hypothesized that neuroplastic changes in beta networks, caused by training in sensorimotor coordination with timing proc

Somatic gene therapy for a neurodegenerative disease using microencapsulated recombinant cells.

Neurodegenerative diseases caused by lysosomal enzyme deficiencies are catastrophic illnesses with both peripheral organ and central nervous system abnormalities. The mucopolysaccharidosis type VII mouse with beta-glucuronidase deficiency was used to develop an alternate approach to gene therapy, in which a "universal" cell line engineered to secrete the missing enzyme is implanted directly into all recipients requiring the same enzyme replacement. The cells, though nonautologous, were rendered immunologically tolerable by protection in immunoisolating microcapsules. Since the blood-brain barr

Ten years of experience with human fibroblast interferon in treatment of viral ophthalmic infections.

This review of ten years of experience presents the results of clinical use of human beta-interferon (Frone) in viral ocular disease. Two forms of human beta-interferon have been used: (a) Frone cream 20,000 IU/g (Inter-Yeda Ltd.) for local treatment and prevention of HSV-1 periocular skin lesions and for Herpes zoster ophthalmicus. (b) Frone eye drops (500,000-1,000,000 U) for prophylaxis and treatment of adenovirus infections and for prevention of recurrent HSV-1 keratitis. Our results show that Frone cream or drops, applied at an early stage, is: (a) Effective in significantly shortening th

Opioidergic pain relief in humans is mediated by beta and high-gamma modulation in limbic regions.

The neurophysiological mechanisms underlying opioid analgesia remain poorly understood, limiting progress toward nonaddictive alternatives. Fentanyl and hydromorphone were administered to patients experiencing semi-chronic, clinically relevant pain following surgical implantation of intracranial electrodes for seizure localization. Pooling recording sites by brain region, opioids significantly suppressed beta oscillations in ventral and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices and high-gamma amplitude in the insula, while enhancing both bands in the hippocampus and posterior cingulate. In an explorato

Finely Tuned γ Tracks Medication Cycles in Parkinson's Disease: An Ambulatory Brain-Sense Study.

BACKGROUND: Novel commercial brain-sense neurostimulators enable us to contextualize brain activity with symptom and medication states in real-life ambulatory settings in Parkinson's disease (PD). Although various candidate biomarkers have been proposed for adaptive deep brain stimulation (DBS), a comprehensive comparison of their ambulatory profiles is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To systematically compare the ambulatory neurophysiological dynamics and clinical properties of three candidate biomarkers-low-frequency, beta (β), and finely tuned γ (FTG) activity. METHODS: We investigated 14 PD patient

Personalized beta band HD-tACS over the left SMA improves speech and limb movement by modulating prefrontal delta oscillations in neurotypical young adults.

Objective. The supplementary motor area (SMA) demonstrates abnormal beta activity (13-30 Hz) during speech and limb movement tasks in neurol … to sham and tRNS.Significance. Personalized beta HD-tACS modulated delta oscillations, rather than beta rhythms, in a task-specific manner, highlighting the brain's adaptive response. These findings have implications for neurological conditions such as PD, which are characterized by deficits in speech production and limb motor coordination.

EEG trajectories across the first two years of life are associated with maternal depression, anxiety, and perceived stress.

Maternal psychological distress (e.g., symptoms of anxiety and depression; perceived stress levels) may influence early neurodevelopmental trajectories of offspring, yet research in community samples with high stress exposures is relatively limited. The current study sought to examine longitudinal trajectories of high-frequency EEG oscillations (β & γ bands) in infants at 2, 6, 9, 12, and 24 months and associations with maternal psychological distress. Using a longitudinal prospective cohort design, 211 families were followed during the first two years of life. Multilevel Mixed Effects models

Modulation of Cerebellar Oscillations with Subthalamic Stimulation in Patients with Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has emerged as a potent treatment for alleviating motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite its effectiveness, the impact of high frequency STN-DBS on cerebellar oscillations remains unclear, posing an intriguing challenge for neural modulation. Given the direct and indirect connections between the STN and cerebellum, we investigated whether STN-DBS affects cerebellar oscillations. OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of STN-DBS on cerebellar oscillations in patients with PD. METHODS: We recruited 15 PD p

Working memory load increases movement-related alpha and beta desynchronization.

Working memory (WM) load has been well-documented to impair selective attention and inhibitory control. However, its effects on motor function remain insufficiently explored. To extend the existing literature, we investigated the impact of WM load on force control and movement-related brain activity. Sixteen healthy young participants performed a visual static force matching task using a pinch grip under varying WM loads. The task included low and high WM load conditions (memorizing one digit or six digits), and the precision level required to control force was adjusted by manipulating visual

Frequency-based Dissociation of Symbolic and Nonsymbolic Numerical Processing during Numerical Comparison.

Recent evidence suggests that during numerical calculation, symbolic and nonsymbolic processing are functionally distinct operations. Nevertheless, both roughly recruit the same brain areas (spatially overlapping networks in the parietal cortex) and happen at the same time (roughly 250 msec poststimulus onset). We tested the hypothesis that symbolic and nonsymbolic processing are segregated by means of functionally relevant networks in different frequency ranges: high gamma (above 50 Hz) for symbolic processing and lower beta (12-17 Hz) for nonsymbolic processing. EEG signals were quantified a

Early-stage dysfunction of hippocampal theta and gamma oscillations and its modulation of neural network in a transgenic 5xFAD mouse model.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is pathologically characterized by amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation, which induces Aβ-dependent neuronal dysfunctions. We focused on the early-stage disease progression and examined the neuronal network functioning in the 5xFAD mice. The simultaneous intracranial recordings were obtained from the hippocampal perforant path (PP) and the dentate gyrus (DG). Concomitant to Aβ accumulation, theta power was strongly attenuated in the PP and DG regions of 5xFAD mice compared to those in nontransgenic littermates. For either theta rhythm or gamma oscillation, the phase synchroniza

Region-specific adenosinergic modulation of the slow-cortical rhythm in urethane-anesthetized rats.

Slow cortical rhythm (SCR) is a rhythmic alternation of UP and DOWN states during sleep and anesthesia. SCR-associated slow waves reflect homeostatic sleep functions. Adenosine accumulating during prolonged wakefulness and sleep deprivation (SD) may play a role in the delta power increment during recovery sleep. NREM sleep is a local, use-dependent process of the brain. In the present study, direct effect of adenosine on UP and DOWN states was tested by topical application to frontal, somatosensory and visual cortices, respectively, in urethane-anesthetized rats. Local field potentials (LFPs)

Motion sickness-susceptible participants exposed to coherent rotating dot patterns show excessive N2 amplitudes and impaired theta-band phase synchronization.

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) can occur via prolonged exposure to visual stimulation that generates the illusion of self-motion (vection). Not everyone is susceptible to VIMS and the neural mechanism underlying susceptibility is unclear. This study explored the differences of electroencephalographic (EEG) signatures between VIMS-susceptible and VIMS-resistant groups. Thirty-two-channel EEG data were recorded from 12 VIMS-susceptible and 15 VIMS-resistant university students while they were watching two patterns of moving dots: (1) a coherent rotation pattern (vection-inducing and pot

Resting-state quantitative EEG characteristics of insomniac patients with depression.

Insomnia is known to show hyperarousal in the central nervous system. However, depression that often coexists with insomnia exhibits hypo-activity in the frontal lobe, which is very different from insomnia. In the present study, we examined wake resting state EEG of insomniac patients with depression to investigate whether they could be conceptualized as spectrum of insomnia or significantly different from insomnia. We compared the absolute power values of EEG spectra of three groups: 15 insomniacs with comorbid depression (CD), age- and sex-matched 15 comorbid-free insomniacs (CFI), and 15 go

Oscillatory activity reflects differential use of spatial reference frames by sighted and blind individuals in tactile attention.

Touch can be localized either on the skin in anatomical coordinates, or, after integration with posture, in external space. Sighted individuals are thought to encode touch in both coordinate systems concurrently, whereas congenitally blind individuals exhibit a strong bias for using anatomical coordinates. We investigated the neural correlates of this differential dominance in the use of anatomical and external reference frames by assessing oscillatory brain activity during a tactile spatial attention task. The EEG was recorded while sighted and congenitally blind adults received tactile stimu
