["Masquerade foreign body" of the conjunctiva].

CASE REPORT: An eight months old child presented with a "red eye" and a corneal erosion since a week. The parents reported on a "hair" which was invisible most of the time but appeared intermittently at the lid margin. The medical history was otherwise unremarkable. In general anaesthesia, a long structure could be easily extracted. The tapering structure disclosed several tiny hair-like filaments sprouting from the thickened end. This end was embedded within a fold of conjunctiva, thus giving the impression of a hair sheath. Clinically, an ectopic "giant hair" was supposed. Histology, however

Differential Mueller matrix imaging of partially depolarizing optically anisotropic biological tissues.

Since recently, a number of innovative polarization-based optical imaging modalities have been introduced and extensively used in various biomedical applications, with an ultimate aim to attain the practical tool for the optical biopsy and functional characterization of biological tissues. The techniques utilize polarization properties of light and Mueller matrix mapping of microscopic images of histological sections of biological tissues or polycrystalline films of biological fluids. The main drawback of currently developed laser polarimetry approaches and Mueller matrix mapping techniques is

The morphogenesis of electrically and heat-induced dermal changes in pig skin.

In order to establish pathological evidence in dermis for distinguishing between sequelae of electrical torture and those of other superficial injuries, the skin of eleven fully anaesthetized Danish Landrace pigs have been exposed to heat and electrical energy from either 50 Hz alternating current (a.c.) or direct current (d.c.) via 12 mm large contact knobs or via a pointed 0.5 mm large electrode (only 50 Hz a.c.). The lesions have been examined from 1 to 126 days after the injury. While heat lesions exposed to energy lower than 60 joule only gave minor changes, heat lesions exposed to more t

Amyloid-like inclusions in Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease is a progressive, autosomal dominantly inherited, neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by involuntary movements (chorea), cognitive decline and psychiatric manifestations. This is one of a number of late-onset neurodegenerative disorders caused by expanded glutamine repeats, with a likely similar biochemical basis. Immunohistochemical studies on Huntington's disease tissue, using antibodies raised to the N-terminal region of huntingtin (adjacent to the repeat) and ubiquitin, have recently identified neuronal inclusions within densely stained neuronal nuclei, per

Juvenile kyphosis (Scheuermann's disease): radiography, histology, and pathogenesis.

In juvenile kyphosis (JK), the roentgenographic defects correspond to the sites of large translucent areas of the collagen-free tissue in the cartilaginous end plates of vertebral bodies. The extent of the roentgenographic lesions is proportional to the number and size of these translucent areas. The gradual transition of radiologic signs between the fully developed JK and the normal spine is paralleled by the decreasing intensity of these histologic change. This relationship can be traced from individual to individual, and within single vertebral columns. The growth zone is often narrow or ev

Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography of necrotizing scleritis.

A polarization-sensitive swept-source optical coherence tomography system (central wavelength: 1,310 nm; A-line rate: 20 kHz) was developed to evaluate the three-dimensional structure of the anterior eye segment with the phase retardation associated with the anterior segment birefringence of the eyes. Evaluation of normal eyes and an eye with necrotizing scleritis was performed. In the sclera of the normal eyes, a striking polarization change was observed in the cumulative phase retardation images and the boundary of the sclera could be readily detected. In the eye with necrotizing scleritis,

[Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal induced arthropathy].

CPPD deposition disease is a common and potentially severe arthropathy. Hyperparathyroidism, hemochromatosis and hypomagnesaemia can favour chondrocalcinosis and must be looked for in early disease (< or =60 years). Chondrocalcinosis can cause severe attacks of inflammatory arthritis (pseudogout) as well as various forms of chronic arthropathies including pseudo RA, pseudo OA and pseudo neuropathic joint disease. Diagnosis is based on synovial fluid analysis, (positively birefringent CPPD crystals) and X-rays (punctuated and linear radio densities in cartilage). NSAIDs and i.a. or systemic glu

Invasive tophaceous pseudogout in the temporomandibular joint: misdiagnosis as tumor: case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of focal calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) arthropathy in a 72-year-old, white woman that occurred in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), a relatively unusual location for CPPD crystals. The patient underwent surgical exploration and radiation therapy because of histologic interpretation of an initial biopsy specimen as showing metastatic poorly differentiated carcinoma. Further evaluation of the specimen revealed the presence of positively birefringent crystals under compensated polarizing light microscopic examination. Previously reported cases of CPPD affecting the TMJ

Perinuclear lens retrodots: a role for ascorbate in cataractogenesis.

Lens retrodots are round, oblong, or oval features in the perinuclear zone of the adult lens after the fifth decade of life and associated with cataract. Retrodots were found in 47 out of 121 eyes with cataract (39%) in the present series. They show birefringence in vivo and in vitro, and chemical studies suggest that they contain calcium oxalate. It is proposed that ascorbic acid, which is abundant in the normal human lens, is the most likely source for this oxalate. Ascorbic acid is thought to have a protective role against oxidative stress in the lens and other parts of the eye, and its lev

A Curious Case of Omental Oxalate Crystals in a Patient With Struma Ovarii: Pointers to an Unusual Clinicopathological Scenario.

Percutaneous image-guided biopsies are becoming increasingly common in routine pathology practice, with the greater omentum emerging as a common target. We present herein an account of a middle-aged lady with a complex ovarian mass, omental thickening, and raised serum CA125; clinically suspected to have advanced ovarian malignancy. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) from the ovarian mass was inconclusive. Omental biopsy revealed only refractile, birefringent crystalline material with surrounding foreign body giant cell reaction; thus surprising the clinical team. Subsequent resection of t

Bilateral Kienböck's disease concomitant with gouty arthritis.

A 38-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of pain and stiffness in the bilateral wrist. The pain in right wrist was disabling and severe enough to restrict the daily life activities. After the evaluation of clinical and radiological features, the patient was diagnosed with Kienböck's disease Lichtman stage IIIB in the right wrist and stage IIIA in the left wrist. Routine laboratory investigations revealed a serum uric acid 9.27 mg/dL. Lunate excision and scaphocapitate fusion were done in the right wrist after discussing with the patient. The histopathological examinations of tophi in

Gouty tophi presenting as multinodular lateral inguinal swelling: A case report.

Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an important diagnostic tool which is replacing biopsy for the diagnosis of subcutaneous nodules. We present a case of 75 years old female with right sided multinodular lateral inguinal swelling since 2 years, without any clinical features of arthritis. FNAC of the lesion revealed negatively birefringent, long needle shaped monosodium urate crystals in the background of amorphous granular debris. Further investigations revealed high serum uric acid levels (9.36 mg/dL) and a confirmed diagnosis of gouty tophus was made. It is important that pathologist

Amyloid deposition in 2 feline thymomas.

Two cases of feline thymoma with amyloid deposition were encountered between 1982 and 2010. Neoplastic cells were separated by abundant, pale eosinophilic, homogeneous material that was congophilic and birefringent. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells were connected by desmosomes, and the extracellular deposits were composed of nonbranching, hollow-cored fibrils, 8-10 nm in diameter. In the case with sufficient archived tissue for additional sections, the amyloid remained congophilic following potassium permanganate incubation, and the neoplastic cells were immunoreactive for pancytokerati

A case of destructive calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease of the temporomandibular joint: a diagnostic challenge.

The authors present the case of a 64-year-old woman with a destructive calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease of the temporomandibular joint. Progressive pain, swelling and a malocclusion were her chief complaints. A few granular calcified masses surrounding the left condylar head and extending to the infratemporal fossa and middle cranial base were presented in CT images. It occurred alone without other joints being affected. A provisional diagnosis of occupying lesion with invasion was made preoperatively, but histologically, the mass contained numerous deposits of

A case of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease presenting as an acute polyarthritis.

We report a case of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease (CPDD) presenting as an acute polyarthritis. A 66-yr-old woman was admitted with a 5-day history of fever and multiple joint pain including wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees, and ankles developed 5 days before admission. Her plain radiographs of wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees, and ankles showed chondrocalcinosis. The pubic symphysis, lumbar intervertebral discs, and both hip joints, which were asymptomatic, also had calcium deposits. The compensated polarized microscopic examination of the joint fluid, aspirated fr

Furrier's lung.

As is known, the inhalation of animal hairs can provoke immunological reactions in the respiratory tract affecting the naso-tracheo-bronchial sector and giving rise to asthma-like syndromes. Another form of disease, found in furriers with long exposure to `hair dust', is described. It is characterized by a granulomatous interstitial pneumonia, of the tuberculoid type, very similar to that described in other diseases related to the inhalation of organic dusts, both vegetable and animal, such as `farmer's lung' and `bird fancier's lung'. This new disease—which we experimentally reproduced—can be

Photoluminescence of Rhodamine from Nano-Confinement Inside 3D Sculptured Coatings.

The effect of the confinement of fluorophores (rhodamine 6G) in nano-cavities of porous 3D sculptured coatings made by glancing-angle deposition (GLAD) was investigated by fluorescence-lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). Shortening of fluorescence/ photoluminescence lifetime by ∼10% was observed from the dye-permeated (in liquid) structure; however, there was no rotational hindrance of dye molecules. When dried, a strong rotational hindrance 89% was observed for the orientation along the ordinary optical axis (slow-axis), and the hindrance was smaller than 57% for the extraordinary direction (
