Volume status and blood pressure during long-term hemodialysis: role of ventricular stiffness.

The importance of volume status on blood pressure in hemodialysis patients has long been recognized. We hypothesized that the enhanced volume dependency of blood pressure is partly determined by ventricular stiffness at end systole. A total of 115 long-term hemodialysis patients were invited to receive a comprehensive, noninvasive cardiovascular examination. End-systolic elastance was determined by using a novel, noninvasive echo-Doppler technique. The positive ratios of the interdialytic systolic blood pressure change vs weight gain during the subsequent 25 hemodialysis sessions were averaged

Relative blood volume measurements by magnetic resonance imaging facilitate detection of testicular torsion.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The authors determine the utility of relative blood volume measurements (rBV) using a blood pool marker for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detection of early testicular torsion. METHODS: Testicular torsion was induced in rats by counterclockwise 720 degrees rotation and fixation of the testis in the scrotum. MPEG-PL-DTPA-Gd enhanced MRI (30 mumol Gd/kg bolus injection) was performed 1 hour after torsion at 1.5 T using fat-suppressed three-dimensional fast spoiled gradient-recalled sequence for relative blood volume measurement and three-dimensional time-of-fligh…

Fetal redistribution of blood flow and amniotic fluid volume in growth-retarded fetuses.

Our purpose was to assess the relationship between the fetal redistribution of blood flow and the amount of amniotic fluid in appropriate-for gestational-age fetuses and growth-retarded fetuses. Blood flow velocity waveforms of the umbilical artery, descending aorta, middle cerebral artery, renal artery and uterine artery were recorded using pulsed Doppler ultrasonography in 100 appropriate-for gestational age fetuses and 39 growth-retarded fetuses. The pulsatility index (PI) values and the amount of amniotic fluid were compared between the two groups. The PI values of the umbilical artery and

Acute effects of furosemide on blood pressure in functionally anephric, volume-expanded rats.

The hypotensive effect of loop diuretics is primarily mediated by a decrease in extracellular fluid volume that follows the intense diuresis. In the present study we investigated whether furosemide (1.25 mg/kg i.v.) can acutely lower blood pressure independently of its diuretic action. The experiments were performed in four groups of male Wistar rats: (a) rats in which furosemide was administered after bilateral ligation of renal vessels and saline (0.9% NaCl at a rate of 0.25 ml/min to a final volume of 1% of body weight) infusion; (b) rats in which furosemide was injected after bilateral lig

A study of common carotid arterial blood flow volume of nursing home residents.

Ninety-seven nursing home residents were divided into 2 groups according to whether they had had an episode of stroke or not. Each group was classified into 3 subgroups: prolonged bed rest, walking with aids or walking by themselves. They were investigated for both the carotid blood flow volume and the modified Stockton geriatric rating scale (SGRS). In chronic stroke residents, the total blood flow volume of prolonged bed rest residents was lower than that who can walk by themselves. In residents without stroke, the total blood flow volume of prolonged bed rest residents was lower than the ot

Central venous blood oxygen saturation: an early, accurate measurement of volume during hemorrhage.

Accurate and relatively simple monitoring is essential in managing patients with multiple injuries, and becomes particularly important when … n of blood loss. Sixteen mongrel dogs were anesthetized and bled by increments of 3% of their total blood volume until the onset of sustained hypotension or a 25% blood loss. All dogs were monitored with a Swan-Ganz catheter and an arterial line. Vital signs, full hemodynamic parameters, and arterial and mixed venous blood gases were measured after each 3% blo …

Thoracic duct lymph flow in pregnant sheep and response to blood volume expansion.

Left thoracic duct lymph flow rate averaged 0.077 +/- 0.003 (SD) and 0.078 +/- 0.003 ml X min-1 X kg-1 in near-term pregnant and nonpregnant sheep (P greater than 0.5). Lymph and plasma protein concentrations were unaltered in the pregnant compared with the nonpregnant animals. The thoracic duct lymph flow responses to three serial intravenous infusions of lactated Ringer solution were essentially the same in the pregnant and nonpregnant animals. Blood volume and vascular pressure changes during and after volume loading were essentially the same in both groups. In addition, terbutaline adminis…

Left ventricular volume and ejection fraction determined by gated blood pool emission tomography.

Electrocardiogram gated single photon emission computed tomography of the intracardiac blood pools is a recent development that involves the acquisition of images in multiple projections after in vivo erythrocyte labelling with technetium-99m and reconstruction of these images into tomographic sections in any desired plane. The technique was used in 25 subjects to measure left ventricular volume, by summing the areas of the ventricle in each of the tomographic sections, and the results compared with those using a counts based (non-geometric) technique from planar radionuclide ventriculography.

Does preinterventional flat-panel computer tomography pooled blood volume mapping predict final infarct volume after mechanical thrombectomy in acute cerebral artery occlusion?

PURPOSE: Decreased cerebral blood volume is known to be a predictor for final infarct volume in acute cerebral artery occlusion. To evaluate the predictability of final infarct volume in patients with acute occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) or the distal internal carotid artery (ICA) and successful endovascular recanalization, pooled blood volume (PBV) was measured using flat-panel detector computed tomography (FPD CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with acute unilateral occlusion of the MCA or distal ACI without demarcated infarction, as proven by CT at admission, and su…

Maternal and Neonatal Factors Impacting the Volume and Cellular Composition of Umbilical Cord Blood.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is a well-established source of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for transplantation, with over 30 years of clinical experience confirming its safety and efficacy. However, the limited cell count contained for a single UCB unit remains a major constraint on its application in adult recipients, and donor eligibility criteria vary greatly among different cord blood banks. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify key maternal, neonatal, and perinatal factors that influence the volume and quality of collected UCB to help overcome this limitation. METHODS: We

Cryopreserving Small Volumes of Red Blood Cells Using the High Glycerol Method.

Cryopreservation of red blood cells (RBCs) plays a critical role in blood inventory management by enabling long-term frozen storage of rare blood types. This process requires the addition of glycerol, a cryoprotectant that mitigates cellular damage caused by ice crystal formation during freezing and thawing. A high glycerol method (HGM) is commonly used, which requires an approximate concentration of 40% glycerol and enables slow freezing rates (1-3°C/min) and extended storage in low-temperature freezers (≤-65°C). While automated cell processing systems have been developed for the glycerolizat

Sample volume management: the role of the clinical laboratory in minimizing diagnostic blood loss.

Hospital-acquired anemia is highly prevalent and largely preventable complication of hospitalization, affecting up to 40-74 % of patients and up to 90 % of intensive care units patients. Excessive diagnostic blood loss from routine phlebotomy represents a significant and modifiable contributor, with cumulative blood collection volumes independently associated with increased risk of moderate to severe anemia and subsequent transfusion. This narrative review examines the magnitude, clinical consequences, and systemic drivers of diagnostic blood loss, and positions sample volume management (SVM)

Volume of Gadolinium Enhancement and Successful Repair of the Blood-Brain Barrier in Cerebral Adrenoleukodystrophy.

Up to 40% of boys with adrenoleukodystrophy develop a severe central nervous system demyelinating form (cALD) characterized by white matter changes and gadolinium enhancement on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) is the only proven means to attenuate cALD progression. The elimination of active neuroinflammation is indicated radiographically by the resolution of gadolinium (Gd) enhancement and correlates to speed of donor neutrophil recovery. We analyzed 66 boys with cALD undergoing HCT for biomarkers correlating with early (30 days post-HCT) Gd signal resolut
