We evaluated clinical signs and administered anthelmintic treatment to a wild-caught, captive Florida panther (Felis concolor coryi) kitten from Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida (USA) infected with the hookworm, Ancylostoma pluridentatum. Clinical signs observed included poor body condition, lethargy, and below normal red blood cell numbers, hemoglobin concentration, and packed cell volume, and elevated eosinophil numbers. In addition, a maximum of 936 Ancylostoma sp. eggs/g of feces were found on Day 11 of captivity. Following oral administration of 20 mg/kg pyrantel pamoate on Day 11,

Focal dendritic swellings in secondary dendrites of Purkinje cells were observed in post-mortem samples of the cerebellum processed by the Golgi method from three patients affected by mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) types I-H, II and III. These focal dendritic swellings exhibited smooth surfaces but secondary formation of spine-like appendages was absent; in contrast, terminal, spiny branchlets were preserved. Complementary electron-microscopical examination of these samples revealed that membranous cytoplasmic bodies and zebra-like inclusions accounted for the material stored in these focal swell

Evidence is accumulating that the current concept of resegmentation during vertebral formation is no longer valid. In order to shed some light on this controversial issue, in the present investigation the development of the vertebral column was studied in a graded series of mouse embryos by conventionally stained serial sections and methyl thymidine 3H autoradiography. It was found that the vertebral bodies do not originate from the upper and lower halves of sclerotomes but from a continuous central tissue mass surrounding the notochord, the perichordal tube. The caudal sclerotome half gives r

With a seriously ill postoperative patient, selecting the best course of action may be difficult when laboratory data suggest hematologic abnormalities. If an Afro-American is to undergo major surgery, simple postoperative screening procedures are available for certain hereditary erythrocyte abnormalities. Acute hemolysis, from any cause, may mimic advanced liver disease. Bleeding into closed body spaces, with erythrocyte destruction secondarily, may mimic generalized hemolysis. One basic premise is always to review the medications being administered; many drugs may induce granulocytopenia or

Heath, D., Smith, P., and Hasleton, P. S. (1973).Thorax, 28, 551-558. Effects of chlorphentermine on the rat lung. Chlorphentermine hydrochloride (`Lucofen') is a sympathomimetic agent which is used in the treatment of obesity at a dosage of 25 mg thrice daily. When this drug, which is available on the British market, was administered intraperitoneally to rats in a dosage of 50 mg per kg body weight for 50 days, they all developed striking pathological changes in the lungs. Numerous large cells with foamy cytoplasm appeared in the alveolar spaces. Groups of them clumped together and disintegra

BACKGROUND: Impaired oxygen delivery or blood flow to the brain around the time of birth can cause injury. Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a leading cause of death and disability in term and near-term infants. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) (reducing body temperature to 33-34 °C for 72 h after birth) is the only intervention available for infants with moderate-to-severe encephalopathy. TH should be initiated within 6 h of birth for maximum benefit. Many infants worldwide are not born in a centre where TH is possible, and transport is required for active TH. In Australia, the current me

BACKGROUND: The association of alcohol with psoriasis has been inconsistent among studies.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed (1) to determine whether alcohol consumption (by status, frequency, and subtype of alcohol) modulates smoking-related psoriasis risk in postmenopausal women while stratifying for smoking status and pack-years and (2) to evaluate the effect of smoking cessation on psoriasis risk in postmenopausal women.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 106,844 postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative between 1993 and 1998. Patients diagnosed with psoriasis were i

Three-body interactions have long been conjectured to play a crucial role in the stability of matter. However, rigorous studies have been scarce due to the computational challenge of evaluating small energy differences in high-dimensional lattice sums. This work provides a rigorous analysis of Bain-type cuboidal lattice transformations, which connect the face-centered cubic (fcc), mean-centered cubic (mcc), body-centered cubic (bcc), and axially centered cubic (acc) lattices. Our study incorporates a general (n, m) Lennard-Jones (LJ) two-body potential and a long-range repulsive Axilrod-Teller

INTRODUCTION: Cleidocranial dysostosis is a syndrome defined by three characteristic findings: clavicular aplasia, retarded cranial ossification, and autosomic dominant hereditary transmission, with completed penetrance and full expression. However, the diagnosis cannot only be made based on those finding, because the polymorphism and extension of the lesions of this disease is important. Therefore, in this disease we can see upset in the second teething, short stature or dwarf, persistence of the biconvex appearance of vertebral body, bone hypoplastic iliac, retarded pubis branch ossification

Liver specimens from 10 cases of yellow fever (YF) were studied by light and four by electron microscopy to review morphological aspects of the disease relevant to its diagnosis, with special emphasis on acidophilic bodies (AB) and on the possible presence of the virus within infected cells. The AB were compared with those found in 22 out of 69 liver specimens with other pathological processes. In YF the typical alteration was an acidophilic hepatocellular necrosis with a preferential midzonal distribution. Ceroid pigment was abundant, its amount was proportional to the degree of liver cell da

BACKGROUND: Foundry workers are occupationally exposed to a variety of inhalable chemical substances. Occupational exposure to vapors, gases, dusts, and fumes can lead to adverse health effects on the respiratory system and cause chronic respiratory diseases, such as interstitial lung diseases (ILDs), chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Research on respiratory symptoms, diseases, and lung function in foundry workers over the past few decades has been limited. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and d

BACKGROUND: Zinc is a key element in numerous proteins and plays an important role in essential cell functions such as defense against free radicals and DNA damage repair. Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a chronic inflammation with progressive fibrosis of pancreas ultimately resulting in pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI), which is associated with malnutrition. Studies analyzing zinc levels in patients with CP are sparse and lead to conflicting results.
AIM: To investigate serum zinc levels in patients with CP of various etiologies.
METHODS: Between October 2015 and March 2018, patients wi

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Intracranial infections related to the various foreign materials used to secure intracranial aneurysms are extremely rare. The lack of neoendothelium formation across the necks of aneurysms, which is particularly prone to occur when the sac is incompletely packed by Guglielmi detachable coils (GDC), results in the absence of isolation of the coils from the circulation. Colonization of GDCs, which act as a foreign-body nidus after hematogenous spread from infections with bacteremia, may result in localized intracranial infection.

The tegumental surface of a new strigeid metacercaria, Nematostrigea sp., which is a parasite of the freshwater fish Channa gachua (Hamilton) in central Vietnam, is described for the first time using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. In addition to the general tegumental surface in various parts of the body, details of the surface of the suckers, lappets and holdfast organ are presented, as are variations in the form and distribution of the body spines. As good taxonomic criteria are few in diplostomoid metacercariae at both specific and generic levels, a number of the

The tegumental surface of the newly excysted juvenile, first-week and adult stages of a human liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The surface of the newly excysted juvenile is characterized by circumferentially arranged ridges alternated with troughs which bear rows of spines encircling the body. These spines are characterized by the shapes of their edges: the first type with serrated edge appears on the anterior part, and the second type with single sharp edge appears on the middle part. There are no spines on the posterior part of the body. Three

Diabetes is a widely spread disease affecting the quality of life of millions of people around the world and is associated to a higher risk of developing infections in different parts of the body. The reasons why diabetes enhances infection episodes are not entirely clear; in this study our aim was to explore the changes that one of the most frequently pathogenic bacteria undergoes when exposed to hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis conditions. Physical surface properties such as hydrophobicity and surface electrical charge are related to bacterial growth behavior and the ability of Staphylococcus

The type AB pineal body of the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, was recessed and lobulated, was extensively vascularized and intimately related to great veins, and was unassociated with the epithalamic region. The habenular and the posterior commissures coursed anteriorly and were unassociated with the pineal. The saccular suprapineal recess of the third ventricle extended dorsally juxtaposed to the pineal body. These anatomical features are likely to make pinealectomies in the vampire more difficult to manage. The pineal parenchyma consisted of light pinealocytes surrounded by canalicul
