Umbilical psoriasis is not relevant to psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriasis involving specific areas has been reported to be related to the future development of psoriatic arthritis (PsA), although whether the location of the involved sites is related to PsA development remains unclear. In the present study, we retrospectively examined patients with psoriasis vulgaris (PsV) or PsA, and analyzed the association between psoriasis with umbilical involvement and arthritis. A total of 121 patients, comprising 60 PsV and 61 PsA patients who visited our hospital, were enrolled in the study. We compared the prevalence of umbilical lesions between the PsV and PsA gro

Influence of clinical and hemodynamic characteristics on signal-averaged electrocardiogram in postoperative tetralogy of Fallot.

This study examines the relation between signal-averaged electrocardiographic measurements and the occurrence of spontaneous ventricular arrhythmias in 86 patients with a postoperative right bundle branch block after repair of tetralogy of Fallot; special attention was given to the influence of age, body surface area and right ventricular systolic pressure on signal-averaged electrocardiograms. Twenty-eight of the 86 patients had significant ventricular arrhythmias on 24-hour ambulatory monitoring. A positive linear correlation was found between filtered QRS duration and age at evaluation or b

Variations in body morphology explain sex differences in thermoeffector function during compensable heat stress.

What is the central question of this study? Can sex-related differences in cutaneous vascular and sudomotor responses be explained primarily by variations in the ratio between body surface area and mass during compensable exercise that elicits equivalent heat-loss requirements and mean body temperature changes across participants? What is the main finding and its importance? Mass-specific surface area was a significant determinant of vasomotor and sudomotor responses in men and women, explaining 10-48% of the individual thermoeffector variance. Nonetheless, after accounting for changes in mean

Nineteen-millimeter aortic St. Jude Medical heart valve prosthesis: up to sixteen years' follow-up.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND; Prosthetic valve replacement in a small aortic root without annulus enlargement raises concern about its long-term benefits. METHODS: Between July 1979 and June 1994, 104 (18%) of 593 patients underwent aortic valve replacement using the 19-mm St. Jude Medical heart valve prosthesis. There were 93 women and 11 men, with a mean age of 66.2 +/- 10.6 years. Forty-four patients (42%) were 70 or more years old. The mean body surface area was 1.61 +/- 0.16 m2 (range, 1.2 to 2.1 m2). Forty-nine patients (47%) underwent concomitant procedures; 23 patients (22%) required corona

Changes in rectal temperature as a means of assessing heat tolerance and sensitivity in chickens.

High ambient temperature and relative humidity significantly affect growth and production performance in poultry. Ability of poultry to regulate their core body temperature relative to the ambient temperature depends on the relative nutrient/energy expenditure in maintenance and performance requirements. We hypothesized that changes in rectal temperature corrected for surface area can be used as a measure of heat tolerance/sensitivity. Rectal temperatures of one hundred mixed sex Ross 308 broiler chickens were measured hourly from 6 AM to 6 PM at 24 days of age. The ambient temperature and rel

Unique Acute Phytophotodermatitis Reaction and a Visual Diagnostic Guide.

Here, we describe a case of a 48-year-old caucasian female with no significant past medical history who presented to the outpatient dermatology clinic with an extremely painful and significant phytophotodermatitis (PPD) reaction to over 30% of her body surface area. The patient presented after partaking in a ritualistic ceremony where she was exposed to plant and citrus juices and subsequently sunbathed while on a tropical vacation. While not an infrequent diagnosis, this patient presented to the dermatologist in extreme pain after having no education on avoiding such triggers. This diagnosis

Sarcopenia among patients receiving hemodialysis: weighing the evidence.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on how best to define low muscle mass in patients with end-stage renal disease. Use of muscle mass normalized to height-squared has been suggested by geriatric societies but may underestimate sarcopenia, particularly in the setting of excess adiposity. We compared four definitions of low muscle mass in a prevalent hemodialysis cohort. METHODS: ACTIVE/ADIPOSE enrolled prevalent patients receiving hemodialysis from the San Francisco and Atlanta areas from June 2009 to August 2011. Whole-body muscle mass was estimated using bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy,

Liver regeneration after extended right hemihepatectomy in patients with hilar or diffuse bile duct carcinoma.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The degree to which liver size can be restored and the factors that determine liver regeneration after major hepatectomy are not well understood. METHODOLOGY: Liver volumes (LV) were estimated from computed tomography scans in 16 patients who survived with no evidence of cancer recurrence more than 1 year after extended right hemihepatectomy. RESULTS: The mean percentage of LV at 1 year was 75.7 +/- 9.5% and LV did not change significantly beyond 1 year after surgery. A significant correlation was observed between LV at 1 year and body surface area (r = 0.79, p < 0.001). A s

[Impact of antineoplastic drugs on the nutritional status of older patients with cancer. Can the medical oncologist minimize the impact of these drugs on the nutrirional status of these patients?].

Aging is associated, per se, with the loss of functional reserve of different organs and systems, a greater risk of vulnerability and frailty, sarcopenia and malnutrition, a reality that is extended to cancer patients. There are several factors that are associated with malnutrition in the elderly individual, such as the difficulty in regulating food intake, loss of appetite and anorexia associated with age, alteration of the senses of taste and smell, dysgeusia or economic problems. In the case of the cancer patient, other factors are added to these factors, such as: type of tumor; tumor stage

Is palmar surface area a reliable tool to estimate burn surface areas in obese patients?

Estimating TBSA burned is critical to the initial management and fluid resuscitation of patients who have sustained burn injuries. TBSA of scattered burn injuries are frequently estimated using the patient's percentage palmar surface area (%PSA), which is taught as being 1% of the TBSA. This study investigates the relationship of %PSA to TBSA as the body mass index (BMI) increases. Age, sex, race, weight, height, and PSA was collected from obese and nonobese volunteers. TBSA was calculated using the Mosteller, DuBois-DuBois, Livingston and Scott, and Yu formulas. The %PSA relative to TBSA was

Influence of aerobic fitness and body fatness on tolerance to uncompensable heat stress.

This study examined the independent and combined importance of aerobic fitness and body fatness on physiological tolerance and exercise time during weight-bearing exercise while wearing a semipermeable protective ensemble. Twenty-four men and women were matched for aerobic fitness and body fatness in one of four groups (4 men and 2 women in each group). Aerobic fitness was expressed per kilogram of lean body mass (LBM) to eliminate the influence of body fatness on the expression of fitness. Subjects were defined as trained (T; regularly active with a peak aerobic power of 65 ml x kg LBM(-1) x

Temperature dependence of habituation of the initial responses to cold-water immersion.

The initial responses to cold-water immersion, evoked by stimulation of peripheral cold receptors, include tachycardia, a reflex inspiratory gasp and uncontrollable hyperventilation. When immersed naked, the maximum responses are initiated in water at 10 degrees C, with smaller responses being observed following immersion in water at 15 degrees C. Habituation of the initial responses can be achieved following repeated immersions, but the specificity of this response with regard to water temperature is not known. Thirteen healthy male volunteers were divided into a control (C) group (n = 5) and

Pharmacokinetics in the child.

Pharmacokinetic studies have made many significant contributions to rational therapeutics in children. Pharmacokinetic data have helped distinguish between differences in drug disposition and drug sensitivity in children as compared to adults and led to the establishment of age-specific dosage guidelines. Factors influencing the observed differences between drug disposition in children and adults are reviewed. Specific examples utilizing anticancer drugs are presented. The use of model substrates to study hepatic drug metabolism and renal excretion in children is described and some results are

[Morphophysiological aspects of closed destruction of the conduction pathways of the heart].

An experimental study in an electrophysiological model of the human body showed defibrillator discharge current, used for closed electrodestruction of His' bundle in cases of drug-resistant supraventricular tachycardias, to cause a spark discharge and high-energy shock wave around the intracardiac electrode resulting in contusion of the heart. To stop the sparking, it is suggested that impulse voltage should be reduced while its duration should be prolonged in order to maintain local destruction potential. The relationship between the damaging effect of the impulse, and its force and duration

The bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of cimetidine and its metabolites in juvenile cystic fibrosis patients: age related differences as compared to adults.

The pharmacokinetics and metabolism of cimetidine were studied in five cystic fibrosis patients (mean age 12.6 years) after oral and intravenous administration. As compared to healthy adult volunteers, cystic fibrosis children had an elevated cimetidine total body clearance (474 vs 300 ml/min/m2) as well as renal clearance (293 vs 232 ml/min/m2) whether normalized for body weight or surface area differences. Cimetidine elimination was elevated in juvenile cystic fibrosis patients as compared to adult volunteers, however, it did not differ significantly from that previously seen in age matched

The Scaling of Olfaction: Moths have Relatively More Olfactory Surface Area than Mammals.

Body size affects nearly every aspect of locomotion and sensing, but little is known of its influence on olfaction. One reason for this missing link is that olfaction differs fundamentally from vision and hearing in that molecules are advected by fluid before depositing on olfactory sensors. This critical role of fluid flow in olfaction leads to complexities and trade-offs. For example, a greater density of hairs and sensory neurons may lead to greater collection, but can also lead to reduced flow through hairs and additional weight and drag due to a larger olfactory organ. In this study, we r
