Perinatal programming and functional teratogenesis: impact on body weight regulation and obesity.

It is increasingly accepted that alterations of the intrauterine and early postnatal nutritional, metabolic, and hormonal environment may ca … ent during perinatal development, may lead to 'malprogramming' of neuroendocrine systems regulating body weight, food intake and metabolism. This results in an increased disposition to become obese and to develop diabetes throughout life. In conclusion, a complex malprogramming of the central regulation of body weight and metabolism may provide a general etio …

Etiology of body dissatisfaction and weight concerns among 5-year-old girls.

Among adolescent girls and women, higher weight status is associated with greater body dissatisfaction and weight concerns. This study investigated the etiology of body dissatisfaction and weight concerns among 5-year-old girls by assessing associations among girls' and parents' weight status, body dissatisfaction, and weight concerns. Weight status, body dissatisfaction, and weight concerns were assessed for 197 5-year-old girls and their parents, and relationships among these variables were investigated using multiple regression in the form of path analysis. For girls and parents, higher wei

Energy homeostasis and body weight in obesity: new physiopathological and therapeutic considerations.

This paper reviews recent developments and findings regarding the role of the hypothalamus as the main site in the central nervous system (CNS) for regulating appetite. It contains a specific neural network consisting of the main central monoaminergic neurotransmitters (adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine, serotonin) and many neuropeptides with orexigenic and anorexigenic functions. The crucial relationship between CNS and obesity and the complex interconnections of CNS and peripheral peptides are becoming clearer. The mechanisms by which these hormones affect energy homeostasis through long a

Hemiosteoporosis after severe stroke, independent of changes in body composition and weight.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fractures are a serious complication after stroke, and the risk of hip fractures among stroke patients is increased 2 to 4 times versus a reference population. Fractures after stroke are probably caused by the development of hemiosteoporosis and the high incidence of accidental falls. The aim of this study was to investigate the development of hemiosteoporosis in relation to other changes in body composition during the first year after severe stroke. METHODS: The study included 24 patients with extensive paresis after stroke. Bone mineral content (BMC) and fat and lean

Body weight prediction in early fossil hominids: towards a taxon-"independent" approach.

The choice of a model taxon is crucial when investigating fossil hominids that clearly do not resemble any extant species (such as Australopithecus) or show significant differences from modern human proportions (such as Homo habilis OH 62). An "interhominoid" combination is not adequate either, as scaling with body weight is strongly divergent in African apes and humans for most skeletal predictors investigated here. Therefore, in relation to a study of seven long bone dimensions, a new taxon-"independent" approach is suggested. For a given predictor, its taxonomic "independence" is restricted…

Visualization of Vascular Inflammation Using Diffusion-Weighted Whole-Body Imaging with Background Body Signal Suppression.

Diffusion-weighted whole-body imaging with background body signal suppression has been used to diagnose fever of unknown origin. An 86-year-old man who underwent bile duct jejunostomy for bile duct cancer presented with fever (body temperature, 40°C). Escherichia coli was detected in blood cultures. Diffusion-weighted whole-body imaging with background body signal suppression revealed accumulation in the aortic arch. Therefore, infectious aortitis secondary to retrograde cholangitis was diagnosed. The patient was treated with antibiotics, and the aortic arch accumulation disappeared. Diffusion

Body mass index (BMI) but not body weight is associated with changes in the metabolism of risperidone; A pharmacokinetics-based hypothesis.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to unravel the influence of body weight and body mass index (BMI), both consistently reported as pharmacokinetic relevant parameters, on metabolism of risperidone in a naturalistic sample. METHODS: Conducting non parametrical tests we sought for correlations between plasma concentrations of RIS, 9-OH-RIS and AM and body weight and BMI in patients out of a therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) database. Further, we stratified patients to three groups based upon BMI values and compared drug concentrations between groups. RESULTS: Although body weight failed to correlate with p…

Visualizing Aortic Inflammation by Diffusion-Weighted Whole-Body Imaging with Background Body Signal Suppression (DWIBS).

A 75-year-old man, with a history of descending thoracic aortic rupture and dissection treated with aortic stenting at 73 years old, was admitted for rehabilitation following recurrent cerebral ischemic attacks. Upon admission, blood tests revealed elevated inflammatory markers, including a C-reactive protein (CRP) level of 10.75 mg/dL and a D-dimer level of 4.2 µg/mL, alongside microcytic anemia. Despite thorough evaluations using computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound, the origin of these abnormalities remained unidentified. Two months later, MRI using diffusion-weighted whole-body imaging

Estimation of Body Fluid Status by Fluid Balance and Body Weight in Critically Ill Adult Patients: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The charting of daily fluid balances and measurement of body weight changes are two noninvasive methods commonly used in the intensive care unit for estimating body fluid status. The determination of body fluid status plays an important role in the management of critically ill patients where aggressive fluid resuscitation is often required. This can adversely affect patient outcomes if changes in fluid distribution are not detected early in patients who are susceptible to fluid overload. AIM: To synthesize the best available evidence on the accuracy of daily fluid balance charting…

Exploring how milk production, body weight and body condition dynamics affect reproductive success after artificial insemination in dairy goats.

In the context of agroecological transition, breeding females with robust reproductive performance, leading to prolonged lactation sequences, is valuable for farmers. This study aimed to explore the relationship between artificial insemination (AI) success and phenotypic lactation curves that serve as proxies for key biological functions in Alpine and Saanen goats. Using data from two French experimental farms (1996-2021), the study analyzed time series data on milk yield (MY), body weight (BW), and sternal body condition score (BCS_S). These data were modeled at the lactation scale to charact…
