The relationship between changes in body components and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is not fully understood. We investigated the effects of body components and subsequent changes on incident NAFLD at follow-up ultrasound scanning in a longitudinal cohort. We included 9967 participants without NAFLD at baseline who underwent serial health examinations. Sex-specific, weight-adjusted skeletal muscle index (SMI_Wt) was used. Mean follow-up duration was 48.5 ± 33.5 months. NAFLD developed in 2395 participants (24.0%). Body composition was measured using bioelectrical impeda

The decomposition process of a body can be influenced by various intrinsic and extrinsic variables. While many intrinsic and extrinsic variables are known to affect decomposition, their specific effects under different climate conditions remain unclear. Gaining a better fundamental understanding of how these variables affect the decomposition rate contributes to better interpreting the taphonomic context, being able to more accurately estimate the post-mortem interval (PMI) in the future, and help prevent over- or underestimation of the PMI. Here we investigated the influence of weight (rangin

BACKGROUND: Aerobic exercise is recommended for weight management. Recent evidence suggests that there may be time-dependent differences in how exercise affects body weight and energy balance regulation. The primary purpose of this study is to determine the effect of morning versus evening aerobic exercise on changes in body composition and components of energy balance in adults with overweight and obesity.
METHODS: The Timing Intervention of Morning versus Evening EXercise (TIMEX) study is a two-arm, 56-week, block randomized (1:1) aerobic exercise intervention. One hundred twenty-eight adul

Background/Objectives: Weight gain after kidney transplantation is frequent but heterogeneous, often accompanied by changes in body composition that influence long-term outcomes. This study analysed one-year changes in body compartments and their demographic and clinical determinants. Methods: A prospective cohort of 112 adult kidney recipients transplanted between September 2020 and June 2022 at a Spanish tertiary hospital was followed. Body weight, muscle mass, fat mass, visceral fat and total body water were assessed by multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance at discharge, and at 3, 6 and 1

BACKGROUND: Surgery is widely regarded as a pivotal therapeutic approach for treating oesophageal cancer, and clinical observations have revealed that many oesophageal cancer patients also present with concomitant hyperlipidaemia. It is surprising that few studies have been performed to determine how blood lipid levels are affected by oesophageal cancer resection. This research was designed to assess the influence of oesophageal cancer resection on lipid profiles among individuals diagnosed with both oesophageal cancer and hyperlipidaemia.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out on

Perfluorooctane sulfuric acid (PFOS) is a persistent organic pollutant, causes fetal growth retardation but the mechanism is still unclear. This study focused on PFOS-induced toxicity such as placental trophoblast cell histopathological changes, endocrine function (i.e., prolactin (PRL)-family hormone production) and subsequent fetal growth retardation in mice. Maternal body weight gain, placental and fetal weights were significantly decreased in proportion to PFOS dosage. Placental efficiency (fetal weight/placental weight) was significantly reduced dose-dependently. Necrotic changes were obs

PURPOSE: Weight loss after bariatric surgery is commonly reported using anthropometric parameters; however, these measures do not distinguish between changes in fat mass, lean tissue, and body water. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) enables a more detailed assessment of body composition and may provide additional information regarding postoperative physiological adaptations. The present study aimed to evaluate longitudinal changes in BIA-derived body composition over a 24-month follow-up after sleeve gastrectomy (SG) in patients with class III obesity. In addition, exploratory subgroup a

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a risk factor for COVID-19. However, it is unknown whether weight changes can alter this risk. We investigated the association of weight changes with SARS-CoV-2 infection and acute severe COVID-19 outcomes occurring within two months of the infection.
METHODS: We used 6.3 million nationwide cohort. The body weight was classified as follows: (1) underweight, body mass index (BMI) < 18.5 kg/m2; (2) normal, BMI 18.5-22.9 kg/m2; (3) overweight, BMI 23-24.9 kg/m2; (4) obese, BMI≥ 25 kg/m2. Weight changes were defined by comparing the classification of body weight during the

BACKGROUND: There is no standardized definition for metabolic health. Overweight and obesity are often linked to metabolic dysfunction. Bariatric surgery promotes body weight loss and cardiometabolic health improvement.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to characterize metabolic health using distinct definitions and evaluate anthropometric and cardiometabolic features, both before and after different surgery procedures.
METHODS: We studied 3313 individuals from CRI-O [Porto, PT; BMI 39.56 (42.60; 46.20) kg/m2; 36 (43; 51) y; 82.7% women] who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB; 61.7%), sleeve gastrecto

To investigate the effects of ethanol on gonadal function, 24 male dogs were divided into four groups: the control group received no ethanol and the other three groups were fed varying amounts of ethanol for 30 days. Plasma concentrations of testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured by radioimmunoassay after 30 days of ethanol or control feeding. At the conclusion of the experimental period the testes of each dog were examined for unstimulated and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)-stimulated testosterone production by means of an in vivo perfusion method. None of the dogs lost w
