Buccal bone plate stability after immediate implant placement and loading: A 10-year radiographic evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Immediate implant placement and loading have been proposed to preserve peri‑implant tissues and optimize esthetic outcomes. However, long-term data regarding buccal bone plate stability and the association between baseline buccal bone thickness and long-term dimensional outcomes remain limited. To evaluate 10-year changes in buccal bone thickness measured 2 mm apical to the implant shoulder (tBB_2mm) following immediate implant placement and loading, and to assess the association of surgically measured baseline buccal bone thickness with 10-year outcomes. Designed guide plate assisted cortico-cancellous Iliac crest bone grafting for alveolar cleft repair.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar cleft is a common developmental malformation in the maxillofacial region, often occurring with cleft lip or palate. The traditional "gold standard" iliac bone grafting implants only cancellous bone in the alveolar cleft region. However, this approach provides insufficient initial mechanical support and is prone to structural collapse and accelerated bone resorption. This study used digital guide plate assisted cortico-cancellous iliac crest bone grafting to repair alveolar clefts, aiming to provide better structural support while reducing bone resorption. METHOD: This stu

New design of plate implant for bone healing assessment using frequency measurement: a biomechanical cadaveric study.

This study is a biomechanical cadaveric investigation to assess bone healing by measuring frequency changes using a new plate design called bone union detection with wire’s natural frequency (BUDWF). Based on natural frequency and strain theory, in bone fracture conditions, the plate experiences higher strain under axial load and generates higher frequency, compared to the bone union condition where strain is lower and frequency is lower. If frequency changes can be detected, they can be used to determine the bone healing status. Eight human cadaveric tibia bones were used in the experiment. B

Low-dose infigratinib increases bone growth and corrects growth plate abnormalities in an achondroplasia mouse model.

Achondroplasia (ACH), the most common form of disproportionate short stature, is caused by gain-of-function point mutations in fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3). Abnormally elevated activation of FGFR3 modulates chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation via multiple signaling pathways, such as the MAPK pathway. Using a mouse model mimicking ACH (Fgfr3Y367C/+), we have previously shown that daily treatment with infigratinib (BGJ398), a selective and orally bioavailable FGFR1-3 inhibitor, at a dose of 2 mg/kg, significantly increased bone growth. In this study, we investigated the

Titanium vs PEO Surface-Modified Magnesium Plate Fixation in a Mandible Bone Healing Model in Sheep.

Titanium plates are the current gold standard for fracture fixation of the mandible. Magnesium alloys such as WE43 are suitable biodegradable alternatives due to their high biocompatibility and elasticity modulus close to those of cortical bone. By surface modification, the reagibility of magnesium and thus hydrogen gas accumulation per time are further reduced, bringing plate fixation with magnesium closer to clinical application. This study aimed to compare bone healing in a monocortical mandibular fracture model in sheep with a human-standard size, magnesium-based, plasma electrolytic-oxida

Autologous non-vascularized fibula with compression plating in the management of aseptic complex non-union of long bones.

BACKGROUND: The surgical treatment of non-union of long bones are challenging especially when bones are osteoporotic or there is a large bone gap due to repeated surgeries and implant failures. Plate with intramedullary fibula provides a stable construct as fibula acts as a second implant with better anchorage and high pull-out strength. The aim of our study is to present our experience of treating complex non-union of long bones using compression plating (LCPs/DCPs) in combination with autologous non-vascularized fibular graft (ANVFG). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 10 cases of complex non-union of l

Experimental study of a 3D printed permanent implantable porous Ta-coated bone plate for fracture fixation.

Metal plates have always been the gold standard in the clinic for internal fracture fixation due to their high strength advantages. However, high elastic modulus can cause stress shielding and lead to bone embrittlement. This study used an electron beam melting method to prepare personalized porous Ti6Al4V (pTi) bone plates. Then, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology coats tantalum (Ta) metal on the pTi bone plates. The prepared porous Ta-coated bone plate has an elastic modulus similar to cortical bone, and no stress shielding occurred. In vitro experiments showed that compared with pTi…

Impact of periprosthetic femoral fracture fixation plating constructs on local stiffness, load transfer, and bone strains.

Secondary femoral fractures after the successful plate-screw fixation of a primary Vancouver type B1 periprosthetic femoral fracture (PFF) have been associated with the altered state of stress/strain in the femur as the result of plating. The laterally implanted condyle-spanning plate-screw constructs have shown promises clinically in avoiding secondary bone and implant failures as compared with shorter diaphyseal plates. Though the condyle-spanning plating has been hypothesized to avoid stress concentration in the femoral diaphysis through increasing the working length of the plate, biomechan

Effect of Downsized Screw Selection on Bone Healing and Postoperative Complications in Volar Plating of Distal Radius Fractures.

When performing volar plating of distal radius fractures, selecting downsized subchondral screws may prevent dorsal screw penetration (DSP), which is a risk factor for extensor tendon rupture. However, downsizing may cause loss of reduction or poor bone healing. This prospective study investigated the effect of downsized screw selection on bone healing and postoperative complications. A total of 115 patients with postoperative follow-up longer than 6 months comprised the study population. Using a depth gauge, screws that were 2-mm shorter than the measured value were selected. The DSP then was

Mechanical effects of residual bone mass, a maxillofacial prosthesis, and a reconstruction plate on the mandible after marginal resection.

In this study, analytic models were used to simulate marginal resection in the area of the second premolar to the second molar region, and the mechanical effects on the mandible of residual bone mass, a maxillofacial prosthesis, and a reconstruction plate were evaluated by three-dimensional finite element analysis. As residual bone mass decreased, maximum principal stress increased near the anterior ramus of the mandible, and maximum shear stress increased at the anterior buccal region of the resected area. In the mandible with a maxillofacial prosthesis, the maximum principal stress distribut

Plating and cortical bone grafting of clavicular nonunions: clinical outcome and its relation to clavicular length restoration.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to evaluate whether plating and cortical bone grafting of shortened clavicular nonunions would restore clavicular length and enable bone healing. The association between the clavicular length difference (CLD) between sides and long-term functional outcome was also explored. METHODS: For this retrospective 2-center study, patients who underwent plate fixation with cortical bone grafting of a clavicular nonunion were assessed after ≥2 years. The CLD and bone union were assessed using radiography and navigation ultrasound. The functional outcome was determi

Plate fixation with autogenous bone grafting for longstanding humeral shaft nonunion: A retrospective study of 6 cases.

Longstanding humeral shaft nonunion is uncommon because humeral shaft fractures often respond well to conservative and surgical treatments. However, when it occurs, the treatment of longstanding humeral shaft nonunion is challenging. This study is a retrospective analysis of the clinical and radiographic findings in a consecutive series of patients with longstanding humeral shaft nonunions who underwent locking compression plate (LCP) fixation and autogenous iliac crest bone grafting.Six patients were surgically treated at Xi'an Hong Hui Hospital for longstanding humeral shaft nonunions betwee
