Detecting bone lesions in the emergency room with medical infrared thermography.

INTRODUCTION: Low- to high-energy impact trauma may cause from small fissures up to extended bone losses, which can be classified as closed or opened injuries (when they are visible at a naked eye). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of clinical diagnosis of bone trauma through medical infrared thermography, in a hospital emergency room. METHODS: Forty-five patients with suspected diagnosis of bone fracture were evaluated by means of medical infrared images, and the data correlated with the gold standard radiographic images, in the anteroposterior, lateral, a

Fracture status of wild cranes (Grus monacha and G. vipio) found dead or in a weak condition at Izumi Plain in Japan.

The Izumi Plain in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, is a major wintering ground for wild cranes. Between October 2009 and March 2016, a total of 204 Hooded Cranes Grus monacha and White-naped Cranes G. vipio were found dead or in a weak condition in the plane. Of these, 56 cranes had bone fractures. The rate of incidence of fracture was considered to be higher in White-naped than in Hooded Cranes. Tibia fractures were the most common. The leg and wing fracture numbers were almost equal. Forty six percent of the fracture cases were believed to be caused by collisions with the power line.

Lower extremity traction pins: indications, technique, and complications.

The placement of pins in the lower extremity for the purpose of skeletal traction is a basic skill required by an orthopedic surgeon. These pins are primarily used for the management of fractures and dislocations. Although simple, the insertion and care of these pins can be accompanied by severe complications including damage to neurovascular structures, physeal injury, ligamentous insult, fracture, and infection. We review the techniques of pin insertion at the distal femur, proximal tibia, and calcaneus to provide a foundation for residents and attendings alike so that unnecessary complicati

A study of limb asymmetry and its effect on estimation of stature in forensic case work.

Estimation of stature is an important parameter in identification of commingled, mutilated and skeletal remains in forensic examinations. Bilateral asymmetry is defined as the difference between the measurements of the left and right sides of the human body. While estimating stature from skeletal material as well as from body parts in forensic anthropology case work, asymmetry of the human body may result in erroneous estimates due to bilateral variations present in dimensions of the human body and bones. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate asymmetry in upper and lower extremity d

Roller skating injuries in children.

Many children who roller skate sustain injuries. To determine the type and severity of these mishaps, the medical records of 76 children less than 16 years of age with roller skating injuries presenting to two pediatric emergency departments were reviewed. Seventy-five percent were girls, and 25% were boys. The upper extremity was the most common body part injured (74%) (P less than 0.0001). Lower extremity injuries occurred in 12%, head and face injuries in 10%, and chest injuries in 4%. The most common type of injury was a fracture (69%), with the wrist and forearm being most frequently frac

Fractures after myelopathy: the risk quantified.

Fractures of the lower extremities have been recognized as a complication of paralysis with myelopathy due to spinal cord injury and impairment (SCI), but the risk has not been quantified and the effect of age, a correlate of predisposing osteoporosis, has not been documented. A long term follow-up review of patients with SCI was conducted to answer these questions. One hundred twenty male SCI patients (91 percent traumatic) were reviewed; the duration of paralysis at follow-up was 21.1 +/- 12.1 years. Forty patients (33 percent) had sustained 76 fracture events resulting in 103 fractures (82

Overuse injuries in the young athlete.

Overuse injuries are now well known to sports enthusiasts at any age or level of competition. The seeming explosion of overuse stress fractures of lower extremity bones in high-profile professional basketball players has brought about widespread media attention and a better understanding of the phenomenon of "overuse syndrome" by the public. However, the spectrum of overuse injuries in the child or adolescent athlete has only recently been recognized. These injuries can range from the permanent disability of osteochondritis dissecans of the elbow to the completely nonspecific "growing pains" o

Adductor longus muscle metastasis of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Bladder cancer most commonly spreads to the lymph nodes, lungs, bones and adrenal glands. Metastasis of bladder cancer to the skeletal muscle is extremely rare, as is the case in other malignancies. We report a case of a 62-year-old male patient who presented with pain and swelling in the right lower extremity and had difficulty walking, and who was later found to have metastasis in the adductor longus muscle 3 months after the initial diagnosis of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder. The study also provides a review of the current literature.

Confounding Association of Lower Limb Hypertrophy With Retarded Long Bone Growth in Mosaic Somatic Neurofibromatosis 1-A Genetic Review and Femoral Lengthening Treatment.

This presentation describes a 15-year-old adolescent boy with neurofibromatosis type 1 with regional somatic mosaicism in the right half of his body. The unique clinical features are highlighted by generalized hemihypertrophy of the lower extremity in association with progressive growth retardation of long bones, which results in limb shortening. The patient successfully underwent limb lengthening. To our knowledge, this is the first neurofibromatosis type 1 article to report of a limb-lengthening procedure in a patient with two major and opposite growth phenomena on the same limb caused by a

An Abnormal Presentation of a Popliteal Artery Mass and a Unique Cause of Claudication.

Multiple hereditary exostosis (MHE) is a rare autosomal-dominant disorder marked by multiple osteochondromas arising from the metaphyses of long bones. Parameniscal cysts, often linked to meniscal tears, can also expand and compress nearby vessels, posing a potential vascular risk. We present a 28-year-old male with MHE and a parameniscal cyst causing popliteal artery compression. The patient's intermittent claudication resolved completely following surgical cyst decompression and meniscal repair. This case report highlights the importance of considering vascular compression in patients with M

Generalized atrophic sarcoidosis with ulcerations.

A 53-year-old man presented to the Manhattan (NY) Veterans Administration Hospital with a 20-year history of generalized atrophic lesions associated with lower extremity ulcerations. Cutaneous biopsy specimens and other laboratory data confirmed the diagnosis of sarcoidosis involving the skin, lungs, eyes, joints, bones, pituitary gland, gonads, and liver. To our knowledge, generalized atrophic sarcoidal lesions have not been described previously in the English literature. Ulcerated cutaneous sarcoidal lesions, though recognized, are only rarely seen in the disease. The ulcerations, but not th

Reconstruction of septic diaphyseal bone defects with the induced membrane technique.

Septic segmental bone voids of the diaphysis are difficult to manage. The induced membrane technique by Masquelet has been successfully used to reconstruct segmental defects more than 20 cm. Our article describes a series of 13 cases with extensive posttraumatic bone loss of the metatarsal, tibial, femoral and radial bones after septic injuries followed by multiple surgical interventions. Antibiotic-impregnated polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) cement spacers were implanted after successful eradication of bacterial infections of soft tissue and bones. After a mean of 9.8 weeks, body-induced membr

Tail-like Congenital Duplication of Lower Extremity (Extra Leg or Vestigial Parasitic Twin).

BACKGROUND: Congenital duplication of lower extremity, either complete or incomplete is extremely rare. Only 26 cases had been reported till 2010, of which only 5 cases had feature of complete duplication. Theories have been proposed that the cause of this abnormality includes maternal factors like diabetes and usage of teratogenic drugs. Duplication of lower extremity may mimic that of vestigial parasitic twin; phenotypically, it appears as an individual with extra appendage or limbs. Vestigial parasitic twis are very rare comprising only 10% of all conjoined twins). Conjoined twin by itself

A comparison between a hinged plate and screw system and a conventional tension-band plate and screw system used for correction of an angular deformity of the lower limb: an animal study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the animal study is to introduce a newly designed hinged plate and screw system for correction of angular deformities of the lower limbs. The technique was compared with the use of a conventional tension-band plate and screw system. METHODS: This is a randomized controlled animal trial. Eight 3-month-old Bama miniature pigs were used to establish animal models. In each animal, one leg was randomly allocated into study group and another leg into control group. Legs of the study group were corrected with a hinged plate and screw system, and legs of the control group w

Bilateral tibial stress fractures: a case report.

A stress fracture can be defined as a fracture of a bone caused by repeated (rather than sudden) mechanical stress. They have been reported in almost all bones of the body, with the lower extremity weight bearing bones, especially the tibia, tarsals and metatarsals, being affected most often. These injuries have a broad spectrum of severity and prognosis. Although the pathology of this injury is understood, the aetiology is less agreed upon. This can make it difficult for clinicians to diagnose and treat this common injury. Stress fractures of the proximal tibiae are common in elderly patients

Fixation techniques in lower extremity correction osteotomies and fractures in mild-to-severe osteogenesis imperfecta patients: evaluation of the results and complications.

INTRODUCTION: Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disorder leading to multiple fractures and deformities. Intramedullary rods have been used in the surgical treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta for decades. Complication rates reported by current techniques have been high. This study aimed to examine the results of intramedullary fixation combined with plate and screw technique in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta compared to isolated intramedullary fixation. METHODS: Between 2006 and 2020, forty patients who had surgical treatment for deformities or fractures of the femur, tibia or both
