Neuroleptic associated tardive dyskinesias in young people with psychoses.

BACKGROUND: Apart from ageing, the factors associated with vulnerability to the emergence of tardive dyskinesia are poorly defined. METHOD: Risk factors associated with the presence of a chronic choreic or dystonic disorder were assessed in a cross-sectional comparison of anamnestic and clinical data in a homogeneous group of 64 young psychotic patients (under 40 years of age) on chronic low to moderate doses of neuroleptics. RESULTS: Dyskinetic subjects presented more indirect indicators of occult brain damage, such as a perinatal event or traumatic brain injuries in infancy and early child

Comprehensive multi-omics, behavioral and morphological analysis of the hazards of nano-plastics in mice with internal carotid artery occlusion.

Accumulation of nanoplastics (NPs) poses a severe threat to the homeostasis of the internal environment in patients with chronic diseases. The effects of NP contamination on health in chronically ill populations must urgently be elucidated. In this study, NPs injected via the tail vein were distributed in the brain and internal organs in a mouse model of chronic internal carotid occlusion. Mice with chronic internal carotid artery occlusion exposed to NPs showed behavioral abnormalities, such as depression and anxiety, thus indicating detrimental effects of NPs on the brain. Subsequently, we u

An Assessment of Melatonin's Therapeutic Value in the Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy of the Newborn.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is one of the most frequent causes of brain injury in the newborn. From a pathophysiological standpoint, a complex process takes place at the cellular and tissue level during the development of newborn brain damage in the absence of oxygen. Initially, the lesion is triggered by a deficit in the supply of oxygen to cells and tissues, causing a primary energy insufficiency. Subsequently, high energy phosphate levels recover transiently (the latent phase) that is followed by a secondary phase, in which many of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the

DNA damage in an animal model of maple syrup urine disease.

Maple syrup urine disease is an inborn error of metabolism caused by a severe deficiency of the branched chain alpha-ketoacid dehydrogenase complex. Neurological dysfunction is a common finding in patients with maple syrup urine disease. However, the mechanisms underlying the neuropathology of brain damage in this disorder are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated whether acute or chronic administration of a branched chain amino acid pool (leucine, isoleucine and valine) causes transient DNA damage, as determined by the alkaline comet assay, in the brain and blood of rats during de

Brain damages in ketamine addicts as revealed by magnetic resonance imaging.

Ketamine, a known antagonist of N-methyl-D-aspartic (NMDA) glutamate receptors, had been used as an anesthetic particularly for pediatric or for cardiac patients. Unfortunately, ketamine has become an abusive drug in many parts of the world while chronic and prolonged usage led to damages of many organs including the brain. However, no studies on possible damages in the brains induced by chronic ketamine abuse have been documented in the human via neuroimaging. This paper described for the first time via employing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) the changes in ketamine addicts of 0.5-12 years

Dissociation between frontal and temporal-parietal contributions to connected speech in acute stroke.

Humans are uniquely able to retrieve and combine words into syntactic structure to produce connected speech. Previous identification of focal brain regions necessary for production focused primarily on associations with the content produced by speakers with chronic stroke, where function may have shifted to other regions after reorganization occurred. Here, we relate patterns of brain damage with deficits to the content and structure of spontaneous connected speech in 52 speakers during the acute stage of a left hemisphere stroke. Multivariate lesion behaviour mapping demonstrated that damage

Electroencephalography and brain damage in preterm infants.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a sensitive method for detection of brain injury in preterm infants. Although the acute and chronic EEG changes are mainly non-specific regarding type of damage, they correlate with later neurological and cognitive function. In infants developing brain white matter damage, acute EEG findings include depression of background activity and presence of epileptic seizure activity. The chronic EEG changes associated with white matter injury and abnormal neurological development include delayed maturation, and presence of abundant Rolandic sharp waves. Cognitive limita

Crucial role of microglia-mediated myelin sheath damage in vascular dementia: Antecedents and consequences.

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion can lead to neuronal necrosis, trigger inflammatory responses, promote white matter damage, and ultimately result in cognitive impairment. Consequently, chronic cerebral hypoperfusion is an important factor influencing the onset and progression of vascular dementia. The myelin sheath is a critical component of white matter, and damage and repair of the white matter are closely linked to myelin sheath integrity. This article reviews the role of microglia in vascular dementia, focusing on their effects on myelin sheaths and the potential therapeutic implications. T

[Secondary mania caused by cerebral organic pathology].

The so-called "secondary mania" are manic syndromes complicating various kinds of somatic illness. Cases of secondary mania following brain injury (i.e., tumors, cerebrovascular lesions, head traumas, infectious diseases, etc.) offer the opportunity to better elucidate the pathophysiology of "primary" mania. Published case reports of secondary mania are reviewed.

Changes in cortical morphology resulting from long-term amygdala damage.

The amygdala's contribution to emotion, cognition and behavior depends on its interactions with subcortical and cortical regions. Amygdala lesions result in altered functional activity in connected regions, but it is not known whether there might be long-term structural sequelae as well. We hypothesized that developmental bilateral amygdala lesions would be associated with specific gray matter morphometric abnormalities in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the ventral visual stream. We conducted regions of interest and vertex-based analyses of stru

Extracranial-intracranial bypass to reduce the risk of ischemic stroke in intracranial aneurysms of the anterior cerebral circulation: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: If clip application or coil placement for treatment of intracranial (IC) aneurysms is not feasible, the parent vessel can be occluded to induce thrombosis of the aneurysm. In the case that such an occlusion cannot be tolerated without subsequent sequel, the additional construction of an extracranial (EC)-IC bypass is needed for sufficient ipsilateral revascularization. Hitherto, the effectiveness of this combined treatment option was not investigated in a controlled randomized trial or in a review. The aim of the current report was to analyze clinical effectiveness of E

[Conditions in stuttering. Results of an interdisciplinary study of 3- to 5-year-old children. Neurologic aspects].

Results recorded from neurological surveys are reported in the context of an interdisciplinary study conducted on 67 children aged three to five years at the onset of speech fluency disorders as well as investigations on 50 children of identical age and sex. The two groups (DS: disruption of speech; CG: control group) significantly differed from each other regarding family predisposition for stuttering. Sub-coordination and whole-body coordination were investigated. Both the occurrence of disorders and as the number of vegetative symptoms recorded from DS children were significantly higher tha

Improved productivity through purposeful use of additional template for a woman with cortical blindness.

A single-subject study with an ABAB design investigated an adaptation of a work activity through the purposeful use of an additional template to improve productivity for a woman with cortical blindness resulting from anoxic brain damage. The activity required the subject to outline brackets (as parts of a handi-rack woodwork project) by tracing a template on a piece of pine board. During the baseline phase of the study, the subject used one template to outline the brackets. During the intervention phase, the subject used an additional template after receiving a brief training in its use. Produ

Paranoid schizophrenia may be caused by dopamine hyperactivity of CA1 hippocampus.

Explicit consolidation of memory, or fixation of declarative belief, appears to be physically represented in changes of synaptic conductances of neurons in the parietal-temporal-occipital association cortex (PTO) of the mammalian forebrain. This fixation of belief in PTO is postulated to be critically dependent on a diffuse reinforcement signal via the inferior temporal cortex (ITC) ultimately caused by an increased output of the CA1 pyramidal cells of hippocampus. Analogous to the reinforcing mechanisms of other forebrain systems, this updating of the connection weights of the neural nets in

Number impairments following hypokalemia: a case study.

A case study is reported of a 55 year old female (B.B.) who complained of significant difficulty manipulating and remembering numbers. Twenty-four years prior to the present complaint, B.B. had been hospitalized for idiopathic hypokalemia and secondary hyperaldosteronism. The present study examined the nature and extent of B.B.'s cognitive impairments. On standardized and experimental tests of intelligence and general cognitive ability, she scored quite well. However, she demonstrated significant impairments in digit span, number processing and calculation, memory for biographical details invo

Memory deficit after closed head injury.

This paper reviews research concerning impairment of memory during the early and late stages of recovery from closed-head injury (CHI). Posttraumatic and retrograde amnesia are discussed, including direct measurement, rate of forgetting and evoked potential correlates. Studies of residual memory deficit in survivors of CHI are reviewed, including the effects of severity and chronicity of injury and features such as utilization of semantic features to guide recall. The evidence for relatively preserved motor and pattern analyzing skills after severe CHI is presented and the implications for reh

Brain opioids and autism: an updated analysis of possible linkages.

Considerable clinical evidence suggests that autistic children lack the normal ability or desire to engage others socially, as indicated by their poor social skills and inappropriate use of language for communicative purposes. Specifically, these children seem to lack normal amounts of social-emotional interest in other people, leading perhaps to a decreased initiative to communicate. This paper summarizes experimental evidence supporting a neurological theory, which posits that autism, at least partially, represents in the brain, such as brain opioids. These substances modulate social-emotion

Behavioral effects of damage to the right insula and surrounding regions.

A severe multimodal neglect syndrome, mutism, oral apraxia and ideomotor apraxia for the right hand suddenly developed in a right-handed male following a right hemisphere (central) stroke. Neuropathologic examination showed an ischemic infarction involving the whole right insula, adjacent white matter, and the inner cortical surface of the right fronto-temporo-parietal operculum. The left hemisphere was spared. It is suggested that damage to the right insula (a polymodal convergence area), and the adjacent white matter may lead to severe neglect. Our case also demonstrates a clear dissociation

Anosognosia in aphasics.

The notion that aphasia may be accompanied by some degree of unawareness of the disorder was introduced by Wernicke in 1874. Ever since the idea has prevailed that sensory aphasics, especially jargonaphasics, are not, or but little, conscious of their deviant verbal output. This view was disputed in recent years. It was claimed that anosognosia was not a typical feature of Wernicke's aphasia or of jargonaphasia. However, analysis of the behavior of sensory aphasics shows that some of these patients are not well aware of the deviances in their verbal output. This unawareness may be due to verba
