Muscular system in the pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis (Teleostei: Scombridae).

The muscular system in the Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis is studied in detail. For the first time, a complete description of the muscular anatomy of a thunnid is provided here. Eighty-two elements including subdivisions of components of the muscular system are identified. This is less than found in a basal perciform and two other investigated scombrid species, owing mainly to the absence or fusion of pectoral, pelvic and caudal fin muscles. The absence of elements of the basal perciform pattern was most prominent in the caudal fin, which includes only the flexor dorsalis, flexor vent

Two cases of nasopharyngeal branchial cleft cyst treated by powered instrument assisted marsupialisation.

OBJECTIVE: We report two extremely rare cases of symptomatic nasopharyngeal branchial cleft cyst treated by powered instrument assisted marsupialisation. METHODS: Case report and literature review concerning nasopharyngeal branchial cleft cyst and surgical treatment methods. RESULTS: The first case was a two-year-old boy with a 1 × 2 cm, cystic, oropharyngeal mass, who also had severe snoring and sleep apnoea. The second case was a 56-year-old man with right nasal obstruction and a sensation of fullness in the right ear. In both cases, we performed endoscopic marsupialisation using a powered

Coexisting first and bilateral second branchial fistulas in a child with nonfamilial branchio-otic syndrome.

We describe what we believe is only the third reported case of coexisting first and bilateral second branchial fistulas associated with nonfamilial branchio-otic syndrome. The patient was a 6-year-old girl who presented with bilaterally draining anterior neck puncta, a preauricular sinus, and moderately severe bilateral hearing loss. She had no family history of branchial anomalies. Compared with branchial cysts and sinuses, branchial fistulas are rare. Even more rare are bilateral second branchial fistulas coexisting with first branchial anomalies, as only 10 cases have been previously report

Crouzon syndrome--A case report.

Crouzon syndrome is a genetic disorder also known as branchial arch syndrome. Specifically, this syndrome affects the first branchial (or pharyngeal) arch, the precursor of the maxilla and mandible. Since the branchial arches are important developmental features in a growing embryo, disturbances in their development create lasting and widespread effects. Previously referred to as craniofacial dysostosis, the disorder is characterized by a number of clinical features; to date, it has no known single, initiating defect to account for all its characteristics. This article presents a case report o

Principles of cranial base ossification in humans and rats.

CONCLUSIONS: 1. The principle of bilateral symmetry depends on the chordal cartilage that is the keystone in cranial base ossification in rats and humans, due to its anatomical situation and for the production of the chordin protein that regulates the bone morphogenetic protein BMP-7. 2. In humans and in rats, foramen lacerum closure follows a line of intramembranous ossification that depends on BMP-7, regulated by the first branchial pouch. 3. The cranial base ossification patterns and centres are similar in humans and in rats, except in the otic capsule, palate and the lateral pterygoid plat

Frontonasal dysgenesis, first branchial arch anomalies, and pericallosal lipoma: A new subtype of frontonasal dysgenesis.

We report on two unrelated Brazilian boys with craniofacial anomalies that involve the frontonasal process and the first branchial arch associated with pericallosal lipoma. To our knowledge this condition seems to have been reported only once previously, but may represent a new condition within the group of the frontonasal dysgenesis. Clinical and imaging data, phenotypic evolution, and differential diagnosis are discussed.

Congenital midline cervical cleft: a report of two cases.

Congenital midline cervical cleft is an uncommon malformation of the anterior neck. We report the cases of two patients with such an anomaly who had been born within 10 days of each other at a regional hospital in upstate New York. Fewer than 100 cases of congenital midline cervical cleft have been reported in the literature, and to the best of our knowledge, none of the other reported cases occurred so close to each other in terms of time and location. Diagnoses in both cases were established by clinical observation soon after birth. No likely epidemiologic commonalities between the two patie

Cell-autonomous and nonautonomous actions of endothelin-A receptor signaling in craniofacial and cardiovascular development.

Craniofacial and cardiac development relies on the proper patterning of the neural crest-derived ectomesenchyme of the pharyngeal arches, from which many craniofacial and great vessel structures arise. One of the intercellular signaling molecules that is involved in this process, endothelin-1 (ET-1), is expressed in the arch epithelium and influences arch development by binding to its cognate receptor, the endothelin A (ET(A)) receptor, found on ectomesenchymal cells. We have previously shown that absence of ET(A) signaling in ET(A)(-/-) mouse embryos disrupts neural crest cell development, re

Relationships between branchial chloride cells and gas transfer in freshwater fish.

The gill lamellar epithelium is composed of two predominant cell types, pavement cells and mitochondria-rich chloride cells. The chloride cells play a vital role in ionic regulation because they are the sites of Ca2+ and Cl- uptake from water. Consequently, lamellar chloride cell proliferation occurs in response to ionoregulatory challenges so as to increase the ion-transporting capacity of the gill. It has been argued that such chloride cell proliferation might increase the thickness of the blood-to-water diffusion barrier and thereby impede gas diffusion. This review focuses on the potential

Phenotypic manifestations of branchio-oto-renal syndrome.

Branchiootorenal (BOR) syndrome is a variable, autosomal-dominant disorder of the first and second embryonic branchial arches, kidneys, and urinary tract. We describe the phenotype in 45 individuals, highlighting differences and similarities reported in other studies. Characteristic temporal bone findings include cochlear hypoplasia (4/5 of normal size with only 2 turns), dilation of the vestibular aqueduct, bulbous internal auditory canals, deep posterior fossae, and acutely-angled promontories.

Branchio-oto-renal dysplasia associated with tetralogy of Fallot.

Branchio-oto-renal dysplasia in its full expression consists of external ear malformations, cervical fistulas or cysts, preauricular pits, hearing loss of conductive sensorineural or mixed type, and renal anomalies. The syndrome is inherited in an autosomal dominant mode. We present a sporadic case of BOR dysplasia associated with tetralogy of Fallot in a 30-month-old girl. The clinical aspects of the disease are discussed briefly.

Branchial cleft anomalies: a five-year retrospective review.

Branchial cleft cysts, sinuses and fistulas are among the most commonly encountered congenital anomalies in pediatric otolaryngic practice. They can present difficulties in differential diagnosis and surgical management. In order to study the clinical presentation and surgical management of branchial cleft anomalies, the operative records of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) were reviewed for a five year period, January 1, 1982 through December 31, 1986. All patients with a pathologically-confirmed post-operative diagnosis of a branchial cleft anomaly were included in a retrospect

Pathogenesis of dysplasias of the face and the ear and dystopias of the temporal region.

Dysplasias of the face and ear are supposed to be caused by a premature involution of 3 different embryonal arteries of the branchial arches: (1) Dysfunction of the mandibular artery causes the otocephalia syndrome; (2) that of the stapedial artery causes dysplasias of the face; (3) dysfunction of the hyoid artery entails dysplasias of the ear; and (4) combination of (2) and (3) (dysfunction of truncus hyostapedialis) results in simultaneous dysplasias of the face and the ear. The earlier the deficiency of blood supply occurs the more serious the resulting dysplasias are. The dystopias in the

[Surgical treatment methods in the 1st and 2d branchial arch syndrome].

Differential choice of methods of treatment was used for the surgical treatment of patients with the syndrome of the first and second branchial arches depending on the disturbance of the face shape, supporting the function of the temporo-mandibular articulation and the kind of bite. In patients with different disorders of bite, supporting function of the temporo-mandibular articulation and displacement of the chin to the damaged side the authors used different means of osteogenic correction of the position of the mandible directed to a simultaneous improvement of the face shape, bite and creat

Cervical bronchogenic cyst in a toddler.

Bronchogenic cyst is a congenital abnormality arising from the tracheobronchial system. Localisation of such cysts in the head and neck region is rare. We report a girl in her early childhood with a painless enlarging right lateral neck mass diagnosed with a branchial cleft cyst based on clinical and radiological MRI findings. An incidental finding of a cervical bronchogenic cyst was made on the final histopathological specimen. Although rare, bronchogenic cysts should be considered as differential diagnoses for paediatric patients' lateral and midline cervical masses.

Ectopic hamartomatous thymoma: a case report showing CD99+ lymphocytes and a low proliferation index.

Ectopic hamartomatous thymoma is a rare benign tumor that consists of spindle, epithelial, and adipose cell elements. We present a case of this lesion arising in the supraclavicular region of a 59-year-old man, including the characteristic immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings. DNA flow cytometry revealed diploidy with a low proliferation index (6.73%). The tumor contained CD99+ lymphocytes; CD99 (MIC2) can serve as a useful marker of immature T cells. These findings suggest that ectopic hamartomatous thymoma may develop from the third branchial pouch or thymic anlage.
