Cutaneous bronchogenic cyst in the left scapular region of a boy.

BACKGROUND: Scapular bronchogenic cyst (SBC) is rare. METHODS: A sinus on a boy's left scapula was excised. RESULTS: Histopathological analysis showed the epithelium with scattered PAS-positive goblet cells was positive for CEA and CK7. CONCLUSION: SBC should be suspected of a superficial scapular skin lesion in children.

Diagnosis and treatment of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts: A case report.

Bronchogenic cysts are uncommon, predominantly benign, congenital malformations arising from the primitive foregut. The occurrence of such cysts in the retroperitoneum is extremely rare. The present study presents the case of a 30-year-old female who presented with a left adrenal mass. Imaging investigations revealed a cystic mass located medially to the left adrenal gland. Retroperitoneal laparoscopic excision and complete resection were performed, and the subsequent pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a bronchogenic cyst in the retroperitoneum. The patient was discharged on t…

Unusual presentation of a cutaneous bronchogenic cyst in an asymptomatic neonate.

Cutaneous presentations of bronchogenic cysts are rare in all age groups. Previous reports of cutaneous manifestations of bronchogenic cysts have been described as nodular, adherent masses, most frequently with a suprasternal location. We report a unique presentation of an infant with a pedunculated, anterior chest wall mass, which was identified as a bronchogenic cyst.

An unexpected finding of a bronchogenic cyst presenting as a thyroid mass.

Herein we present a case of a bronchogenic cyst masquerading as a thyroid mass. Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations that result from an abnormal development of the ventral foregut during organogenesis. They are commonly asymptomatic lesions rarely found in the neck. In our case, a young male presented with complaints of neck discomfort over a long period presumed to be secondary to a thyroid mass based on imaging studies. Fine needle aspiration was inconclusive. Post-operative pathological sectioning revealed evidence of a bronchogenic cyst. These lesions have a low incidence …

Recurrent neck abscess due to a bronchogenic cyst in an adult.

BACKGROUND: Neck abscesses can originate from congenital cervical cysts. Cervical cysts of bronchogenic origin are rare and often asymptomatic. Common symptoms of bronchogenic cysts are stridor, dyspnoea and dysphagia. The reported patient represents the second published case of a bronchogenic cyst causing a neck abscess in an adult. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a cervical bronchogenic cyst presenting as a recurrent supraclavicular abscess in a middle-aged woman. During extirpation, a fistula was demonstrated to the right upper lobe of the lung, suspected because the cyst inflated synchro…

Adrenal and pancreatic presentation of subdiaphragmatic retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts.

Bronchogenic cysts are aberrations of normal development throughout the embryonic foregut; abdominal or retroperitoneal presentations are rare. They will often present a diagnostic dilemma because their appearance can mimic other, more common diagnoses. The initial work-up, differential diagnosis, management, and follow-up may present clinical challenges. We present 1 case of an adrenal lesion and 1 case of a pancreatic lesion that were revealed to be retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts after surgical extirpation.

Bronchogenic and esophageal cyst with laryngeal malformations in a thoroughbred foal.

This report documents an unusual case of congenital foregut cyst with dysphagia and stridor in a Thoroughbred foal. Histologically, the bilocular cyst, near the junction of larynx and trachea, had an epithelial lining of bronchogenic and esophageal origin. Concomitant malformation of the laryngeal muscles and cartilage resulted in a combination of anomalies that have not been reported in the human or veterinary literature.

Two cases of bronchogenic cyst with severe adhesion to the trachea.

We experienced two bronchogenic cysts with severe adhesion to the trachea. Both cysts were located on the right side of the trachea. The surgical procedure was changed to thoracotomy from thoracoscopic surgery due to strong adhesion to the trachea. In case 1, sharp separation of the cystic wall from the trachea led to tracheal wall damage. In case 2, the cystic wall except a portion which was adhered to the trachea was resected. The inner side of the residual cystic wall underwent dull curettage to remove the epithelial component. There were no postoperative complications in either case.

Open vs thorascopic surgical management of bronchogenic cysts.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the operative outcome in children undergoing open vs thoracoscopic resection of bronchogenic cysts. METHODS: The medical records of children who underwent the resection of bronchogenic cysts from 1990 through 2000 were reviewed. Four cyst resections were performed by the open technique and five using a thoracoscopic procedure. The age of the patients, length of hospital stay, duration of drainage, operating time, and outcome were investigated. RESULTS: The mean age of patients undergoing the open procedure was 3 years and 3 months; the mean ag…

Novel approach for a pulmonary bronchogenic cyst: a report of a case.

We present a case of a bronchogenic pulmonary cyst in a 48-year-old patient. We performed [corrected] mucoclasis using argon laser photocoagulation following resection of mucosa, closure of some drainage bronchus, and covering of the inner surface by the intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst with an [corrected] absorbable vicryl mesh. At [corrected] 4-year [corrected] follow-up, the patient had no signs of recurrence.

Bronchogenic cysts: a rare congenital cystic malformation of the lung.

PURPOSE: Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital cystic malformations of the lung. We retrospectively analyzed ten cases of bronchogenic cyst (BC) to reinforce the importance of recognizing this malformation. METHODS: Between 1985 and 2000, ten pediatric patients with BC were treated surgically in our department. Their clinical presentation, radiological, operative, and pathological findings were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: There were five boys and five girls, ranging in age from 16 days to 6 years (mean 6.5 months). The clinical signs and symptoms included respiratory distress in seve…

Lingual bronchogenic cyst in a child: an unusual site of presentation.

We describe a 4-year-old hispanic male with a bronchogenic cyst (BC) in the base of the tongue. To our knowledge, a BC has not been previously reported in the oral cavity. BC is a developmental anomaly believed to originate from abnormal detachments of accessory lung buds from the ventral foregut. We postulate that the unusual location of the BC in the present case is related to the primitive foregut origin of tongue epithelium posterior to the foramen cecum and the sulcus terminalis. A BC in the base of the tongue appears to represent the most proximal expression of aberrant accessory lung bu…

[Bronchogenic cysts of the esophagus. Classical surgery or video-surgery?].

Two cases of bronchogenic cysts involving esophagus are reported. The first case concerns a 30 year-old man, who admitted for dysphagia, regurgitation and abdominal pain. Barium esophagography, esophagoscopy and CT scan showed a cystic mass involving the lower third of the esophageal wall. Treatment consisted in the resection of the cyst by left thoracic approach. The second case concerns a 26 year-old woman, admitted for dysphagia. MRI and endoscopic ultrasonography had contributed to define the exact nature, internal composition and location of the cyst: upper and posterior mediastinum, clos…

Subdiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst with communication to the stomach: a case report.

A case of an infradiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst in an adult patient presenting with nausea, vomiting, and epigastric discomfort is reported. An upper gastrointestinal series showed a multiloculated cyst communicating with the stomach via a patent fistulous tract. At laparotomy the cyst was found to be connected to and communicating with the posterolateral portion of the stomach. The cyst was completely below the diaphragm and received its blood supply from a branch of the abdominal aorta. Histologically, the cyst was composed of smooth muscle, respiratory epithelium, cartilage, and submucous…

Presumed Infected Bronchogenic Cyst Presenting as Acute Pericarditis: A Case Report.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies arising from abnormal budding of the ventral foregut during early embryogenesis. They are typically located in the mediastinum or pulmonary parenchyma and are mostly asymptomatic. However, complications such as infection, compression, hemorrhage, or rupture may cause significant morbidity. Surgical resection is recommended in symptomatic or complicated cysts and may also be justified in asymptomatic patients to prevent future complications. We report the case of a 40-year-old male who presented with chest pain and dysphagia. A presumptive diagno…
