Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory joint disease that results in cartilage and bone damage, primarily involving synovial joints. The hallmark feature of this condition is inflammatory polyarthritis which can be associated with other joint pathologies, including bursitis. Many treatment options help relieve joint pain and slow down damage to the joints in both RA and bursitis. However, not all treatments are effective or affordable. These treatments include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDS), conventional DMA…

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of intrabursal injection of doxycycline sclerotherapy to treat olecranon bursitis (OB) refractory to conservative management.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 27 patients with recurrent OB who were treated over 11 years with intrabursal injections of doxycycline. They were compared with a control group of 18 patients with recurrent OB who underwent surgical bursectomy. Patients were re-evaluated by the treating physician for recurrence of bursitis and treatment complications and completed a questionnaire to assess satisfaction…

Background: Olecranon bursitis (OB) involves fluid accumulation in the bursa, with common causes being trauma and preexisting conditions. Its incidence is difficult to quantify, and risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, and male gender are frequently noted. Hyperlipidemia has been linked to musculoskeletal disorders, but its role as a risk factor for OB remains unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association between OB and hyperlipidemia, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and statin use. Methods: A retrospective cohort study analyzed a large-scale database (2005-2020), u…

Scapulothoracic bursitis involves inflammation of the scapulothoracic bursa caused by overuse of the shoulder or traumatic injury. Conservative management is recommended initially, and a surgical approach, such as bursectomy or scapular angle resection, is indicated later. Scapulothoracic bursitis in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been rarely reported in the literature. A 34-year-old woman was hospitalized in our hospital for a palpable mass on the right side of her back. She had a history of SLE, which was diagnosed and treated with medication 13 years prior. Chest magn…

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR-) T cell therapy is a relatively new form of immunotherapy for hematological malignancies. Although patients are at increased risk of infection following CAR-T cell therapy, reports of fungal infections are scarce. We report a case of Scedosporium apiospermum infection causing bursitis of the elbow in a lymphoma patient after treatment with CAR-T cells. The fungal bursitis relapsed under posaconazole treatment, but was cured after surgical extirpation of the bursa.

INTRODUCTION: Septic malleolar bursitis is a rare cause of ankle pain and swelling. It has been described in certain occupational and recreational activities that involve tight-fitting boots, such as figure skating. Court-ordered electronic monitoring devices are often worn on the ankle. It is not known whether these devices are a risk factor for the development of malleolar bursitis.
CASE REPORT: We describe a 41-year-old male under house arrest with an electronic monitoring device on his right ankle who presented to our emergency department with several days of progressive pain and swelling…

Medial knee pain is common in clinical practice and can be caused by various conditions. In rare cases, it can even be by calcific bursitis of the medial collateral ligament (MCL). Treatment of calcific bursitis and/or calcification of the MCL classically includes observation, local injections, shockwave therapy and surgical resection. We report a case of nontraumatic medial knee pain poorly responsive to conservative treatments. Ultrasound (US) imaging revealed a massive lobed hyperechoic formation with partial acoustic shadow in the MCL context compatible with calcific bursitis, and magnetic…

Trochanteric bursitis is a common disorder that is characterized by inflammation of the bursa, superficial to the greater trochanter of the femur, leading to pain in the lateral hip, and often occurs because of acute trauma or repetitive friction involving the iliotibial band, the greater trochanter, and the bursa. In the study reported here, we hypothesized that the increased incidence of bursitis may be the result of the increased prominence of the trochanter in relation to the wings of the iliac crest. Distances between the outermost edges of trochanters and iliac wings were measured in 202…

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2007eng
Trochanteric bursitis with lateral hip pain is a commonly encountered orthopaedic condition. Although most patients respond to corticosteroid injections, rest, physical therapy (PT), stretching, and anti-inflammatory medications, those with recalcitrant symptoms may require operative intervention. Studies have explored the use of the arthroscope in the treatment of these patients. However, these reports have not addressed the underlying pathology in this chronic condition. We believe that the iliotibial band must be addressed and is the main cause of pain, inflammation, and trochanteric imping…

Of all the forms of nonarticular rheumatism, by far the most common are bursitis and tendinitis. Yet, the bursae and neighboring tendon sheaths are the most neglected anatomic structures of the body. Moreover, like the joints, they are lined by synovial membrane, secrete synovial fluid, and are common sites of rheumatic problems. The vast majority of painful shoulder problems are caused by acute subacromial (subdeltoid) bursitis and bicipital tendinitis. In the management of these periarticular disorders, the ultimate goal is to preserve shoulder motion. Although this is accomplished by daily …

A 63-year-old man was referred for left knee pain, with suspicion of complex regional pain syndrome. Following a normal plain radiograph, 99m Tc-HDP bone scintigraphy using new 3D-ring CZT system (StarGuide) was performed. Blood pool SPECT/CT demonstrated intense hyperemia along the patellar tendon, suggesting infrapatellar bursitis, while late-phase SPECT/CT revealed focal increased uptake on the tibial tuberosity, suggestive of associated patellar tendinopathy. Our case highlights the potential of blood pool SPECT/CT using new 3D-ring CZT system to identify relevant extraosseous conditions s…

CASE: A 41-year-old patient presented with chronic, left-sided trochanteric bursitis, unresponsive to conservative treatments including intensive physiotherapy, local and systemic anti-inflammatory therapy, and neuromodulation. A novel surgical approach was used, involving an adducting trochanteric closing wedge osteotomy to reduce the lateral prominence of the greater trochanter without relevantly affecting the abductor lever arm. The procedure resulted in substantial symptom relief, with excellent functional outcomes.
CONCLUSION: This case underscores the potential of the adducting trochant…

PurposeA response to conservative treatment is usually obtained in cases of ischiogluteal bursitis. However, the time required to achieve relief of symptoms can vary from days to weeks, and there is a high recurrence rate, thus invasive treatment in addition to conservative treatment can occasionally be effective. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine surgical excision in cases of refractory ischiogluteal bursitis and to evaluate patients' progression and outcome.Materials and methodsA review of 21 patients who underwent surgical excision for treatment of ischiogluteal bursitis betwe…

INTRODUCTION: Epidural venous plexus enlargement, presenting with low back pain and radiculopathy, is an uncommon cause of nerve roots impingement. This condition commonly mimics a herniated nucleus pulposus radiologically. The radiological diagnosis is often missed and the diagnosis is made during the surgery. We are hereby presenting 2 such cases of epidural varices mimicking intervertebral disc prolapse with lumbar radiculopathy.
CASE REPORT: Case 1: 43 yr old female presented with acute exacerbation of low back ache and significant right L5-S1 radiculopathy without neurological deficit. M

Sudden death resulting from embolic complications of iliopsoas bursitis has not been previously reported. This case report deals with a 48-year-old woman with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis who presented with symptoms suggestive of deep vein thrombosis. She was found to have complete occlusion of the femoral vein secondary to iliopsoas bursal inflammation and swelling. She died suddenly. At autopsy, a large pulmonary embolism was identified as the cause of death. This report should increase awareness of the incidence of iliopsoas bursitis in rheumatoid arthritis and its potential danger. Ea…

A 63-year-old man developed symmetrical polyarthritis, subcutaneous nodules at the elbows, olecranon bursitis, and recurrent tenosynovitis. He was later discovered to have idiopathic hemochromatosis. Staining of the subcutaneous nodule revealed iron deposits. These manifestations which are common to rheumatoid arthritis may be seen in hemochromatotic arthropathy.

INTRODUCTION: Fungal musculoskeletal infections are rare and often present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Phaeohyphomycosis is a dematiaceous fungal infection with a wide clinical spectrum, but isolated prepatellar bursitis due to this organism has not been previously reported. This case highlights the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for unusual pathogens in transplant recipients presenting with atypical joint or periarticular infections.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 55-year-old female renal transplant recipien…
