PURPOSE: The application of arthroscopy in the proximal interphalangeal joints can avoid scar development and joint contracture. However, conventional arthroscopic techniques are difficult to apply to the palmar side of the joint. This study aimed to explore the feasibility and safety of the inside-out volar portal arthroscopic technique for the proximal interphalangeal joint, elucidating a new portal technique for the inspection and treatment of small joints.
METHODS: We performed the inside-out palmar portal arthroscopic technique on 10 cadavers. The distances between portals and important

Dental implant placement requires a great level of accuracy given the risk of iatrogenic injury to the inferior alveolar nerve and maxillary sinus. Real-time impedance sensing of the surrounding tissues by the drill tip can provide feedback to the surgeon for improved outcomes and reduced risk of injury. Previous studies have shown impedance sensing to successfully discriminate between cortical and cancellous bone in ex vivo and in situ large animal tissue. Understanding electrical properties of tissues in a cadaver model is essential to developing human-centered sensor and tissue classificati

This case report describes the approach and use of an ultrasound-guided pudendal nerve block in dogs. The technique was first performed in the cadaver of a 14 kg male castrated Miniature Australian Shepherd dog. The ultrasound probe was placed in transverse orientation on midline between the anus and ischiatic arch. Methylene blue (0.05 mL kg-1) was injected around the pudendal nerves bilaterally via an in-plane technique, with the following landmarks identified: urethra, perineal arteries, and internal obturator, bulbospongiosus and retractor penis muscles. Postinjection dissection revealed d

Scrotoliths, or "scrotal pearls," are calcified fibrous loose bodies found within the tunica vaginalis, often seen during radiological evaluation or autopsies. Chronic inflammation due to trauma, parasitic infestations, and torsion and subsequent detachment of the appendices of the testis or epididymis are postulated mechanisms suggested for their formation. They are benign but can mimic a tumor. Scrotoliths can be diagnosed with high-resolution ultrasonography. Here, we report a case in which, during routine dissection, two scrotoliths were found within the tunica vaginalis of the left testis

Open reduction and internal fixation of pelvic acetabular fractures are challenging due to the limited surgical exposure from surrounding abdominal tissue. There have been a number of recent trials using metallic 3D-printed pelvic fracture plates to simplify and improve various elements of these fracture fixation surgeries; however, the amount of time and accuracy involved in the design and implantation of customised plates have not been well characterised. This study recorded the amount of time related to the design, manufacture and implantation of six customised fracture plates for five cada

(1) Many biomechanical studies are performed using fresh frozen cadavers or embalmed specimens, although the biomechanical characteristics do not match the characteristics of in vivo tendons. Therefore, a fresh in vivo-like cadaver model has been introduced recently. As a limitation for studies with fresh cadavers, rigor mortis must be considered. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the biomechanical properties and time of occurrence of rigor mortis in a fresh cadaver model. (2) For this study, 15 fresh porcine cadaver shoulders were used in an established biomechanical in vitr

Sagittal craniosynostosis (CS) is a pathologic condition that results in premature fusion of the sagittal suture, restricting the transverse growth of the skull leading in some cases to elevated intracranial pressure and neurodevelopmental delay. There is still much to be learned about the etiology of CS. Here, we report a case of 56-year-old male cadaver that we describe as sagittal CS with torus palatinus being an additional anomaly. The craniotomy was unsuccessful (cephalic index, CI = 56) and resulted in abnormal vertical outgrowth of the craniotomized bone strip. The histological analysis

We performed a cadaver study to evaluate how six different static heat-moulded splints affect flexor tendon relaxation. Each splint positioned the wrist and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints in different positions. We evaluated the tendon relaxation in 12 fresh adult cadaver forearms by measuring the flexor tendon displacement between two solid markers for each splint. The wrist position ranged from 30° flexion to 45° extension and the MCP joints from 30° to 60° flexion. For each splint, tendon relaxation was achieved relative to the neutral reference position. Tendon relaxation was greatest wh

BACKGROUND: The Broström Gould procedure is the gold standard for repair of lateral ankle ligament injury and ankle instability. This procedure has demonstrated excellent short- and long-term outcomes in the orthopedic literature. Arthroscopic Broström Gould techniques have become increasingly popular among some foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons. Typically, this technique requires standard anteromedial and anterolateral portals along with an accessory lateral working portal. The exact location of this portal is variable within the available described surgical techniques. The objective of this

Needles are commonly used in the clinic for percutaneous procedures. The outcome of such procedures heavily depends on accurate placement of the needle. There are two main challenges to achieve high accuracy: First, aligning the needle with the targeted lesion, and second, compensating for the deflection of the needle in the tissue. In order to address these challenges, scientists have developed several robotic setups for needle steering. However, the subject is still under research and reliable implementations which can be used in clinical practice are not yet available. In this paper, we hav

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic piriformis release (EPR) is among the available treatments for piriformis syndrome. This procedure typically involves dividing the muscle near the sciatic nerve in the sub-gluteal space, which contains numerous blood vessels and nerves. The objectives of this prospective cadaver study were: 1) to assess the reproducibility and quality of endoscopic piriformis tenotomy near the greater trochanter; 2) to detect iatrogenic injuries to the lateral hip rotators, nerves, and vessels; 3) and to define the surgical safety margins relative to the sciatic nerve and inferior glutea

Many treatments are available for acute Achilles tendon ruptures, conservative and surgical, with none superior to another. For surgical treatment, one can use various techniques. Recent studies have shown that double stitches are superior to simple sutures. Therefore, in the present study, we sought to determine the suture technique that is the most resistant to rupture. We performed an experimental anatomic study with 27 fresh-frozen human cadaveric Achilles tendons obtained through the body donation program of the University of Barcelona, testing the maximum strength. We simulated a rupture

PURPOSE: To assess the anatomic feasibility of a median-to-radial nerve transfer in cadaver limbs and to quantify the number of axons present in the cut ends of the involved donor and recipient nerves.
METHODS: Ten fresh frozen cadaveric upper limbs were dissected. We investigated whether the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) branch/flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) branch (donor nerve) reached the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN)/extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) branch (recipient nerve) without tension. We also investigated the length of the transected supinator fascia for FCR-posterior
