A 15-year follow-up study of 3178 inhabitants (1424 men and 1754 women) living in the cadmium (Cd) polluted Kakehashi River basin was conducted. The results clarified effects on mortality of renal dysfunction induced by Cd indicated by urinary beta-2-microglobulin (beta2-MG), total protein, glucose, and total amino acids. This study used Cox's proportional hazard model. The mortality risk ratio of urinary beta2-MG positive (>= 1000 microg/gCr) subjects was significantly increased in both sexes: 1.35 for men and 1.73 for women. The increased mortality ratio of the urinary protein positive (>= 1

The health effects of human exposure to cadmium are discussed with emphasis on intake, absorption, body burden, and excretion; osteomalacia in Japan; hypertension; and proteinuria, emphysema, osteomalacia, and cancer in workers. Elevated blood pressure has not been observed as a result of excessive exposures to cadmium in Japan or the workplace. Renal tubular dysfunction and consequent proteinuria is generally accepted as the main effect following long-term, low-level exposure to cadmium. Studies of workers show that proteinuria may develop after the first year of exposure or many years after

Lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) are common heavy metal toxins and cause toxicological renal effects at high levels, but the relevance of low-level environmental exposures in the general population is controversial. A total of 1,797 adults who participated in the KNHANES (a cross-sectional nationally representative survey in Korea) were examined, and 128 of them (7.1%) had chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our study assessed the association between Pb, Hg, Cd exposure, and CKD. Blood Pb and Cd levels were correlated with CKD in univariate logistic regression model. However, these environm

Cadmium (Cd) is a carcinogenic environmental pollutant that harms male reproductive systems by lowering sperm quality, impairing spermatogenesis, and causing apoptosis. Although zinc (Zn) has been reported to alleviate Cd toxicity, the underlying mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this work was to investigate the mitigating effects of Zn on Cd-induced male reproductive toxicity in the freshwater crab Sinopotamon henanense. Cd exposure not only resulted in its accumulation but also in Zn deficiency, decreased sperm survival rate, poor sperm quality, altered ultrastructure, an

The objective of this study was to reveal the effects of cadmium (Cd) on ultrastructural changes, oxidative stress, and transcriptome expression in the kidneys of laying hens. Seventy-two healthy Hy-Line brown laying hens at 41 weeks old were randomly allocated to four treatment groups with six replicates. The control group received a basal diet without additional Cd incorporation, and the other three treatment groups received diets supplemented with 15, 30, or 60 mg Cd /kg of feed. After 6 weeks of exposure, the results show that administration of 60 mg/kg Cd significantly reduced (P < 0.05)

Cadmium (Cd) is a non-essential metal that is highly toxic to all living forms, characterized by an extremely high affinity for thiol (SH) groups. The aim of this work was to identify and experimentally verify metallothionein gene and to analyze the role of biological thiols in stress induced by short-term Cd exposure in Ostrinia nubilalis, one of the most important corn pests. The coding region of a metallothionein (MT) gene in O. nubilalis was identified, encoding protein, OnMT1, which contains 46 amino acids, including 12 cysteine residues, and has no aromatic amino acids. Phylogenetic anal

AIM: Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that causes severe toxic effects on different tissues including liver and kidney. Therefore the research for alternatives to reduce the damage caused by Cd has substantial importance. This study was performed to examine the possible modulatory effects of carvacrol (CRV) against Cd-induced hepatorenal toxicities and the possible mechanisms underlying these effects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, 35 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups. The rats were treated with Cd (25 mg/kg) and treated with CRV (25 and 50 mg/kg body weigh

We used ultrasound (US) transmission to evaluate the speed of sound (SOS) and broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) in the calcaneus in 17 male and 18 female inhabitants of a Cd-polluted area and 23 men and 45 women living in a nonpolluted area. Significant decreases in SOS and stiffness (Stiff), which was an index empirically derived from SOS and BUA, were found in Cd-exposed women. To evaluate the usefulness of the US measurements for detecting bone abnormality in Cd-exposed people, we examined the associations with the bone measurements of metacarpus by the previously used microdensitometr

Rapana venosa (Valenciennes, 1846) and Eriphia verrucosa (Forskal, 1775) are the dominant benthic invertebrate species along the Thrace Coast of the western Black Sea. The aim of this study was to determine toxic metal (Hg, Cr, Cd, and Pb) accumulation levels in these species, as well as within littoral sediments from this area. Our results showed that all of the metals, except for Cd, were below that in average shale. The measured accumulation levels were mostly within the range of what is naturally found within the earth's crust. However, some study stations did have increased concentrations

Selenium (Se), a nutritionally essential mineral for humans and animals, has a significant antagonistic effect on heavy metal cadmium (Cd) biotoxicity. Still, the impact of different Se sources on alleviating Cd toxicity has received only limited attention. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to assess the mitigation level of Cd-induced cardiotoxicity by different sources such as nanoparticles of Se, Se-rich yeast, and sodium selenite (SS). The results evidenced that the presence of Cd led to a significant increase in biochemical parameters such as lactate dehydrogenase and creatin

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between mortality and rice cadmium (Cd) concentration in inhabitants of a polluted area in Japan. The target subjects were inhabitants of the Jinzu River basin who participated in health examinations for screening of renal dysfunction from 1979 to 1984. The mean rice Cd concentration in each hamlet was used as an index of the Cd exposure. We conducted a 26 year follow-up survey in 3281 inhabitants (1544 men and 1737 women) whose data regarding the rice Cd concentration were available. Mortality risk ratios for all and specific causes we

Recent several studies indicated that a more restrictive dietary intake guideline for cadmium should be made for sufficient health protection. In the present study, we showed the references level of food cadmium intake (FCd) and total cadmium intake (TCd) for renal dysfunction by using benchmark dose (BMD) approach. 342 subjects living in a control and a cadmium polluted area were included in this study. The FCd, TCd and cadmium in urine (UCd) and blood (BCd) were calculated or determined. Urinary β2Microglobulin (UBMG) was determined as indicator of renal function. The median FCd, TCd, UCd an

Fungi play a key role in the functioning of soil in terrestrial ecosystems, and in particular in the remediation of degraded soils. The contribution of fungi to carbon and nutrient cycles, along with their capability to mobilise soil trace elements, is well-known. However, the importance of life history strategy for these functions has not yet been thoroughly studied. This study explored the soil-fungi relationship of two wild edible fungi, the ectomycorrhizal Laccaria laccata and the saprotroph Volvopluteus gloiocephalus. Fruiting bodies and surrounding soils in a mine-spill contaminated area

Cadmium and mercury are non-biodegradable toxic metals that may cause many detrimental effects to the thyroid gland and blood. Vitamin C has been found to be a significant chain-breaking antioxidant and enzyme co-factor against metal toxicity and thus make them less available for animals. The current study was performed to find the effect of individual metals (cadmium and mercury), their co-administration, and the ameliorative effects of vitamin C on some of the parameters that indicate oxidative stress and thyroid dysfunction. Cadmium chloride (1.5 mg/kg), mercuric chloride (1.2 mg/kg), and v

Changes in renal function, Na+-K+-ATPase activity and PAH transport system in kidney cortex were studied in rats treated with cadmium. Subcutaneous injections of CdCl2 (2 mg Cd/kg.day) for 16 days induced a marked polyuria and a hyposthenuria. These changes were accompanied by increase in urinary protein, glucose, urea, calcium, phosphate, chloride and potassium excretions. The change in urine flow was proportional to the change in total osmotic solute excretion. Creatinine excretion and TcH2O remained unchanged. Na+ excretion was not increased, but the Na+-K+-ATPase of renal cortex was signif
