Hypercalcemia in children with malignancy is an uncommon condition. It has been described in leukemia patients with impaired renal excretion of calcium or osteolytic lesions. Metastatic calcinosis cutis (MCC) may develop if hypercalcemia persists. We report the case of a 5-year-old girl with an atypical dermatosis and unspecific gastrointestinal symptoms. Considered clinical diagnoses were xanthomas, histiocytosis, molluscum contagiosum, and nongenital warts. Cutaneous histological analysis showed amorphous basophilic deposits in the dermis suggestive of calcium deposits. Laboratory tests conf…

Calcinosis cutis is a quite unusual disease represented by abnormal accumulation of calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Repeated cutis calcinosis means recurrent calcium deposition in pre-existing areas. The case report illustrated the case of a 16-year-old female who had recurrent calcium deposits on the base of her right thumb. The patient initially had swelling at the base of her right thumb, which had been present for six months now. The patient described the dorsal solid mass on top of the thumb base, which was painful and had reduced thumb mobility. There was swelling tha…

Iatrogenic calcinosis cutis represents a subset of calcinosis cutis resulting secondary to treatments or procedures. We present the first report of calcinosis cutis resulting from the intraosseous infusion and one of a few cases with associated transepidermal elimination. A previously healthy 2-year-old female presented with a new-onset unilateral shin rash 1 week following hospitalization for a near-drowning event. A dermatologic exam revealed multiple small, tender, firm, chalky-white papules with surrounding erythema, in addition to two erythematous macules superior and medial to the papula…

Calcinosis cutis is defined as abnormal deposition of calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Dystrophic calcification, the most common form of calcinosis cutis, is associated with autoimmune connective tissue diseases. This condition is associated with severe pain and can affect the patient's quality of life and lead to long-term disability. Treatment is often challenging, and there is a very limited evidence base for potential treatments of calcinosis cutis associated with systemic sclerosis and dermatomyositis. Inkless tattoo is very similar to microneedling, a minimally invasiv…

Calcinosis cutis is the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. We report the case of a 28-year-old Caucasian woman with cystic fibrosis in whom strikingly symmetrical and reticulate calcinosis cutis developed on the lower extremities, which was noted on histology to spare the eccrine glands. Careful review of the literature fails to reveal any previous report with these remarkable cutaneous and histologic manifestations.

An 11-year-old girl with Down syndrome had whitish, milia-like lesions on the acral areas of the limbs, and periorbital syringomas. Calcium deposits were the histologic counterparts of the milia-like lesions. This is the first European report of this feature in Down syndrome.

A woman aged 23 years with a diagnosis of mixed connective tissue disorder presented with left groin pain extending over 6 months. Workup re … lature limited to the gluteal region, anterior and posterior aspects of the thigh. The diagnosis of calcinosis cutis universalis was made after a CT revealed calcified nodules in the subcutaneous, subfascial and muscular planes. A total hip arthroplasty using the posterior approach was performed with minimal trauma to the calcified nodules and thereby preventing a …

An immunologic adjuvant is a substance that enhances the antigen-specific immune response preferably without triggering one on its own. Silicone, a synthetic polymer used for reconstructive and cosmetic purposes, can cause, once injected, local and/or systemic reactions and trigger manifestations of autoimmunity, occasionally leading to an overt autoimmune disease. Siliconosis, calcinosis cutis with hypercalcemia and chronic kidney disease have all been reported in association with silicone injection. Here, we describe a case of autoimmune/auto-inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants, calci…

Calcium deposition in the skin, known as calcinosis cutis, is an uncommon disorder caused by an abnormal deposit of calcium phosphate in the skin. We report a case of idiopathic calcinosis cutis in fingertip treated with surgical excision followed by the occlusive dressing using aluminum foil, and obtained significant pain relief and round-shaped fingertip which looked normal.

An 81-year-old women presented with monstrous subcutaneous mobile masses on the ventral and ventrolateral surfaces of her thighs. Radiography as well as computer tomography showed extensive soft tissue calcifications. We interpreted these alterations as dystrophic calcinosis cutis, most likely resulting from repeated subcutaneous PAS infusions for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Calcinosis cutis in dermatomyositis is dystrophic calcification appearing late in the course of the disease. Two cases are reported here of calcinosis cutis that presented years before other clinical manifestations of juvenile dermatomyositis. The first case was a 14-year-old Thai girl who had asymptomatic subcutaneous nodules that spontaneously ruptured, exuding a chalky discharge and healing with an atrophic scar 8 years before the onset of other clinical manifestations of juvenile dermatomyositis; that is, Gottron's papules, proximal muscle weakness grade IV/V with atrophy, slightly elevate…
