Axonal Projections from Middle Temporal Area to the Pulvinar in the Common Marmoset.

The pulvinar, the largest thalamic nucleus in the primate brain, has connections with a variety of cortical areas and is involved in many aspects of higher brain functions. Among cortico-pulvino-cortical systems, the connection between the middle temporal area (MT) and the pulvinar has been thought to contribute significantly to complex motion recognition. Recently, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), has become a valuable model for a variety of neuroscience studies, including visual neuroscience and translational research of neurological and psychiatric disorders. However, information o…

Plasmodium knowlesi: from severe zoonosis to animal model.

Plasmodium knowlesi malaria is a newly described zoonosis in Southeast Asia. Similarly to Plasmodium falciparum, P. knowlesi can reach high parasitaemia in the human host and both species cause severe and fatal illness. Interpretation of host-parasite interactions in studies of P. knowlesi malaria adds a counterpoint to studies on P. falciparum. However, there is no model system for testing the resulting hypotheses on malaria pathophysiology or for developing new interventions. Plasmodium knowlesi is amenable to genetic manipulation in vitro and several nonhuman primate species are susceptible

Area 3a: topographic organization and cortical connections in marmoset monkeys.

The functional organization of area 3a, a cortical field proposed to be involved in somato-motor-vestibular integration, has never been described for any primate. In the present investigation, the topographic organization and connections of area 3a were examined in marmosets using electrophysiological recording and anatomical tracing techniques. Multi-unit neuronal activity was recorded at a number of closely spaced sites; receptive fields (RFs) for neurons were determined, and the optimal stimulus was identified. In all cases, neurons in area 3a responded to the stimulation of deep receptors

The second visual area in the marmoset monkey: visuotopic organisation, magnification factors, architectonical boundaries, and modularity.

The organisation of the second visual area (V2) in marmoset monkeys was studied by means of extracellular recordings of responses to visual stimulation and examination of myelin- and cytochrome oxidase-stained sections. Area V2 forms a continuous cortical belt of variable width (1-2 mm adjacent to the foveal representation of V1, and 3-3.5 mm near the midline and on the tentorial surface) bordering V1 on the lateral, dorsal, medial, and tentorial surfaces of the occipital lobe. The total surface area of V2 is approximately 100 mm2, or about 50% of the surface area of V1 in the same individuals

Changes in the cortical map of the hand following postnatal median nerve injury in monkeys: modification of somatotopic aggregates.

Median nerves to the hands of 8-15-d-old marmoset monkeys were transected and precluded from regeneration by ligation. Following periods of 0.4-1.5 years, features of organization in the cortical area 3b hand map were assessed neurophysiologically, and compared to features in normally reared monkeys. Cortical features in monkeys with both histories were similar in certain respects. (1) Receptive field organization was similar in terms of tactile thresholds and receptive field size, continuity, and glabrous-hairy specificity. (2) Somatotopic organization was similar in terms of the continuity o

Behavioural effects of anxiogenic agents in the common marmoset.

The effects of the anxiogenic agents FG7142, caffeine, pentylenetetrazole, and amphetamine were assessed in two anxiety situations in the marmoset, first in an "anxiogenic" test based on the animal's response to a human observer standing in front of the home cage and second in a low-anxiety situation where animals behaviour was videotaped in the absence of the observer. In response to the human observer, the anxiolytic agent diazepam (0.1-2.5 mg/kg, SC) was shown to reduce the intensity of behaviours such as postures, while increasing time spent on the cage front. In this test, with the except

Neuropathological changes during generalized seizures in newborn monkeys.

The brains of four 2-week-old marmoset monkeys were perfusion-fixed immediately after bicuculline-induced seizures lasting 1.5-4.3 h and were later examined by light and electron microscopy. Mean arterial blood pressure and rectal temperature measurements during seizures did not differ significantly from baseline. Plasma glucose concentrations decreased to the 1.5 mM range at the end of seizures, and arterial pH and bicarbonate were lower than in control animals, although arterial pO2 and pCO2 were maintained. Neuropathological changes were minimal. Swollen astrocytic processes surrounded some

Yellow Fever Outbreaks Are Not Associated With Long-Term Negative Human Perceptions of Wild Primates in Brazil.

Human perceptions of wildlife are fundamental to guiding effective strategies for conserving biodiversity and public health. Zoonotic diseases affecting non-human primates, such as yellow fever (YF), may trigger negative human behaviors toward these species. We conducted 474 semi-structured interviews across seven municipalities in Minas Gerais (n = 324 respondents) and Bahia (n = 150), Brazil, and used mixed-effects models to evaluate whether human perceptions of marmosets (Callithrix sp.) and howler monkeys (Alouatta sp.) differed according to previous YF outbreaks. YF occurrence was not con…

Murine and Non-Human Primate Dendritic Cell Targeting Nanoparticles for in Vivo Generation of Regulatory T-Cells.

Porous silicon nanoparticles (pSiNP), modified to target dendritic cells (DC), provide an alternate strategy for the delivery of immunosuppressive drugs. Here, we aimed to develop a DC-targeting pSiNP displaying c-type lectin, dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecule-3-grabbing non-integrin (DC-SIGN), and CD11c monoclonal antibodies. The in vivo tracking of these fluorescent DC-targeting nanoparticles was assessed in both C57BL/6 mice and common marmosets ( Callithrix jacchus) by intravenous injection (20 mg/kg). Rapamycin and ovalbumin (OVA)323-339 peptide loaded pSiNP were emp…

Evidence of Tau Hyperphosphorylation and Dystrophic Microglia in the Common Marmoset.

Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) have recently gained popularity in biomedical research as models of aging research. Basically, they confer advantages from other non-human primates due to their shorter lifespan with onset of appearance of aging at 8 years. Old marmosets present some markers linked to neurodegeneration in the brain such as amyloid beta (Aβ)1-42 and Aβ1-40. However, there are no studies exploring other cellular markers associated with neurodegenerative diseases in this non-human primate. Using immunohistochemistry, we analyzed brains of male adolescent, adult, old, and aged…

Individual differences in gambling proneness among rats and common marmosets: an automated choice task.

Interest is rising for animal modeling of pathological gambling. Using the operant probabilistic-delivery task (PDT), gambling proneness can be evaluated in laboratory animals. Drawing a comparison with rats, this study evaluated the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) using a PDT. By nose- or hand-poking, subjects learnt to prefer a large (LLL, 5-6 pellets) over a small (SS, 1-2 pellets) reward and, subsequently, the probability of occurrence of large-reward delivery was decreased progressively to very low levels (from 100% to 17% and 14%). As probability decreased, subjects showed a great v…

Hand Musculature of the Common Marmoset (Callithrixjacchus): An Anatomical Study with Reference to the Rhesus Monkey (Macaca mulatta).

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a New World Monkey that frequently serves as a model in biomedical research. Our knowledge of its anatomy is the fundament of the provision of the correct environment, housing, and care together with provision of accurate medical care in the case it gets wounded. In this anatomical research article, the focus is on the hand musculature, as it plays a pivotal role in the interaction with the environment and conspecifics. Surprisingly, anatomical works on the common marmoset are scarce. The available books and atlases are either outdated in terms of il…

Spatially Extensive LFP Correlations Identify Slow-Wave Sleep in Marmoset Sensorimotor Cortex.

Identifying neural signatures of slow-wave sleep (SWS) is important for a number of reasons including diagnosing potential sleep disorders and examining its role in memory consolidation ( Diekelmann and Born, 2010; Klinzing et al., 2019; Brodt et al., 2023). Studies of sleep in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) have revealed similarities to humans and other nonhuman primates, including distinct sleep stages ( Crofts et al., 2001) and diurnal sleep patterns ( Hoffmann et al., 2012). Advances in applying wireless technology for recording neural activity during natural, unrestrained behavi…

Topographic Organization of Saccade-Related Response Field Properties in the Marmoset Posterior Parietal Cortex.

Despite various histological, electrophysiological, and imaging studies, the topographic organization of saccade-related activity in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) has been notoriously difficult to characterize. In part, this is because areas of interest in PPC are often embedded deep in sulci in macaques and humans. Understanding the extent of topographic organization in PPC can provide insights into the computation contributions of PPC. The lissencephalic cortex of the common marmoset offers a unique opportunity to investigate fine-scale topographic organization in PPC. Recordings were

Representing the dynamics of natural marmoset vocal behaviors in frontal cortex.

Here, we tested the respective contributions of primate premotor and prefrontal cortex to support vocal behavior. We applied a model-based generalized linear model (GLM) analysis that better accounts for the inherent variance in natural, continuous behaviors to characterize the activity of neurons throughout the frontal cortex as freely moving marmosets engaged in conversational exchanges. While analyses revealed functional clusters of neural activity related to the different processes involved in the vocal behavior, these clusters did not map to subfields of prefrontal or premotor cortex, as

Blood Sampling and Hormone Measurement for Determining the Stage in the Ovarian Cycle in Marmosets.

Common marmosets are small New World monkeys. Since many of their biological mechanisms are similar to those of humans, marmosets are potentially useful for medical and human biology research across a range of fields, such as neuroscience, regenerative medicine, and development. However, there is a lack of literature describing methods for many basic experiments and procedures. Here, detailed methods for determining the levels of sex hormones (progesterone, estradiol, and chorionic gonadotropin) in marmosets are described. The measurement of these hormones enables the prediction of the stage i

The common marmoset as a translational model of age-related osteoarthritis.

Age-related osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by pathological changes in nearly every intra- and peri-articular tissue that contributes to disability in older adults. Studying the etiology of age-related OA in humans is difficult due to an unpredictable onset and insidious nature. A barrier in developing OA modifying therapies is the lack of translational models that replicate human joint anatomy and age-related OA progression. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the common marmoset is a faithful model of human age-related knee OA. Semi-quantitati

Visual responses in the dorsolateral frontal cortex of marmoset monkeys.

The marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus) has gained attention in neurophysiology research as a new primate model for visual processing and behavior. In particular, marmosets have a lissencephalic cortex, making multielectrode, optogenetic, and calcium-imaging techniques more accessible than other primate models. However, the degree of homology of brain circuits for visual behavior with those identified in macaques and humans is still being ascertained. For example, whereas the location of the frontal eye fields (FEF) within the dorsolateral frontal cortex has been proposed, it remains unclear …
