Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is the second most common cause of vaginal infection globally after bacterial vaginosis (BV) and associated with adverse reproductive and obstetric outcomes, including preterm delivery, sexually transmitted infections and pelvic inflammatory disease. Although effective control of VVC is achievable with the use of traditional treatment strategies (i.e., antifungals), the possibility of drug intolerance, treatment failure and recurrence, as well as the appearance of antifungal-resistant Candida species remain critical challenges. Therefore, alternative therapeutic …

Oral candidiasis is a common but most harmful oral cavity infection caused by yeast-like fungus, this condition is called Oropharyngeal candidiasis. There are various species of candida that are responsible for oral cavity fungal infection including mostly Candida albicans. Different candida infections may be acute and chronic. Cell-mediated immunity, humoral immunity, and granulocytes are the immune factors for the cause of this infection. Different antifungal drugs like nystatin, fluconazole, and amphotericin are used to treat oral cavity fungal infections.

BACKGROUND: Regardless of the available antifungals, intraabdominal candidiasis (IAC) mortality continues to be high and represents a challenge for clinicians.
MAIN BODY: This opinion paper discusses alternative antifungal options for treating IAC. This clinical entity should be addressed separately from candidemia due to the peculiarity of the required penetration of antifungals into the peritoneal cavity. Intraabdominal concentrations may be further restricted in critically ill patients where pathophysiological facts alter normal drug distribution. Echinocandins are recommended as first-lin…

Candidiasis is a mycosis caused by opportunistic Candida species. The occurrence of fungal infections has considerably increased in the last few years primarily due to an increase in the number of immune-suppressed individuals. Alarming bloodstream infections due to Candida sp. are associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality, and are emerged as major healthcare concerns worldwide. Currently, chemotherapy is the sole available option for combating fungal diseases. Moreover, the emergence of resistance to these limited available anti-fungal drugs has further accentuated the concern …

Inborn errors of the IL-17-mediated signaling have been associated with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC). We describe a patient with CMC, atopic dermatitis, enamel dysplasia, and recurrent parotitis harboring a novel compound heterozygous mutation of TRAF3IP2, leading to autosomal recessive ACT1 deficiency and deficient IL-17 signaling.

Facial oedema after maxillofacial trauma is a common occurrence, but those that soon resolve only to appear again do invoke interest! A rare case is presented of a recurring facial swelling occurring after a maxillofacial injury that did not resolve subsequent to medication and repeated aspirations. Cytospin preparations of the aspirate stained with Giemsa revealed candidiasis. The patient's symptoms resolved soon with antifungal medications and he has been asymptomatic since. Such a scenario has never been reported in the literature and can pose a diagnostic dilemma. It gives insight into the…

BACKGROUND: To determine the clinical features, fungal profiles, treatment outcomes, and factors that are significantly associated with the visual outcomes of eyes with endogenous fungal endophthalmitis (EFE).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The medical records of 17 eyes of 9 patients diagnosed with EFE during January 2005 to December 2013 were reviewed. The collected data included patient characteristics, visual acuities (VAs), length between appearance of the first sign of infection and the first ophthalmic examinations, fungal profiles, and treatment regimen. The main outcome measure was the VA. St

We describe two full-term infants who presented with congenital cutaneous candidiasis (CCC) and compare their clinical presentation and outcome with that of neonatal candidiasis and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis. Although candidal vulvovaginitis occurs in up to one-third of pregnancies, CCC is uncommon and can be confused with more-serious pustular disorders that present in neonates. Greater awareness of CCC is essential to make an early diagnosis and distinguish it from other infections.

Congenital candidal infection usually presents as skin rash but it can also affect skin appendages. Nail involvement in congenital candidiasis is rare and has been usually associated with cutaneous lesions. We report 6 cases of congenital candidiasis limited to nail plates that had favorable outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Invasive candidiasis is a leading cause of infection-related morbidity and mortality in extremely low birth weight (<1000-g) infants. We quantified risk factors that predict infection in premature infants at high risk and compared clinical judgment with a prediction model of invasive candidiasis.
METHODS: The study involved a prospective observational cohort of infants≤1000 g birth weight at 19 centers of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network. At each sepsis evaluation, clinical information was recorded, cultur…

Over the last few decades, the incidence of invasive candidal infections in neonatal intensive care units has increased dramatically. Various complications, such as arthritis, endocarditis, meningitis, and endophthalmitis, have been reviewed. We present the case of a premature infant with systemic candidemia. Arthritis was discovered 6 months after completion of amphotericin B therapy, and was successfully treated with oral fluconazole for 6 weeks. We conclude that long-term follow-up is particularly important in patients with treated candidemia. To prevent complications, prolonged treatment w

Hyperimmunoglobulin E (Job's) syndrome is a rare disease characterized by recurrent pneumonia and sinusitis, pneumatoceles, chronic dermatitis, and elevated serum levels of immunoglobulin E. In this report, the author presents a case of disseminated pulmonary candidiasis in a young man with hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome. His chest radiograph showed reticulonodular opacities in both lungs. Computed tomography scans revealed multiple pulmonary nodules and hilar and mediastinal enlarged lymph nodes.

The incidence of fungal infections is growing in the last 20 years. The epidemiological studies show that 45% of all vaginal infections are caused by Candida albicans or other Candida species. 7 out of 10 women suffer from yeast infection at least once in a lifetime and 4 out of 10 have multiple recurrences. 20-55% of women have asyptomatic vaginal colonization with Candida species. It is strongly believed that fungal infection is not sexually transmitted disease. The route of transmission is oral and it is estrogene dependant. The diagnosis is based on macroscopic, microscopic examination (KO

For many women with chronic vulvovaginal symptoms, overdiagnosis of vulvovaginal candiasis (VVC) is an unfortunate tendency. In women with chronic vulvar itching or burning, a vulvar non-neoplastic epithelial disorder is a relatively frequent diagnosis. Although controversy persists about the nomenclature for these disorders, there seems to be a relatively clear consensus with lichen sclerosus. This chronic inflammatory skin disease affects primarily the female vulvar and perianal areas. Left untreated, it may lead to chronic scarring of the vulva with an associated loss of architecture. The e

OBJECTIVE: To correlate symptoms, signs, and risk factors with positive wet mounts or cultures for Candida albicans and to develop an algorithm to diagnose vulvovaginal candidiasis.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study of 774 randomly selected women from an urban sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic evaluated symptoms, signs, and risk factors associated with C albicans, detected by wet mount and culture, and constructed an algorithm.
RESULTS: C albicans, recovered from 186 (24%) of the 774 women, was associated with chief complaints of vulvar pruritus or burning. Elicited symptoms were v…
